Hello all,

I am running a short campaign for two players and I am afraid of overwhelming them with CR 1 creatures. On the other hand, I don't want to give them encounters that are waaay to easy either. Does anyone know a good general rule for changing ELs for parties of less than 4? I can't find it in the DMG, though I could be looking in the wrong place. Also, do I need to alter the XP gained from these encounters as well?

In the monster ECL rating section is says doubling the monsters of any one CR adds two to the ECL of their group so halving the PCs would reduce their effective level by 2 CR or 2 CR levels, so 2 level 1 PCs are roughly equal in a fight to 1 1/3 CR creature using the CR chart (1/10, 1/6, 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 1, 2, 3, 4, etc). At least this is what I use.

This link is an online CR (and EXP) calculator. It's worked very well for me.
