| Cyan Wisp01-04-07, 10:41 PM | There are so many classes now beyond the original eleven in the PHB. Referencing the Complete books, PHB or PHB II, are there any classes people feel are more suitable for the PHB or MM humanoid races? While favoured classes may be unused much of the time, I do like the flavour that they can impart to a race. :) |

While favoured classes may be unused much of the time, I do like the flavour that they can impart to a race. :) Ah Humans and their favored class (any), the innocuous gift that keeps on giving. Anyway, ones that somewhat standout are Elves and Duskblades, and Gnomes and just about anything other than Bards. :P I disposed of favored class penalties in my games. Instead, you get an extra skill point when you level in your favored class. Nifty idea, how'd that work out? |
| CryoSilver01-04-07, 11:12 PM | Works out just fine. It meshes well with my houserule that every character gets any 2 skills to always be class skills (excepting UMD). |
| Penchant_Conjurer01-05-07, 01:06 AM | OK, CryoSilver. I just added that to my HR list. That solves several issues I was using more complicated rules to solve. Thanx! |
| Salla01-05-07, 01:47 AM | I tossed out favored classes and multiclassing Xp penalties en toto, myself. I may adopt the extra skill point idea, too ... Anyway, there's a feat in Unearthed Arcana (and thus, the SRD) that allows you to gain an additional favored class. |
| Anaxander01-05-07, 10:24 AM | I also did away with favored classes and even multiclass penalties. The fighter is the only class which I have given two additional class skills, so a player can adapt his fighter better to a specific role (eg a guard will have listen & spot, a pirate will have bluff and sleight of hand, a knight will have diplomacy and knowledge (nobility) etc). |
| Cyan Wisp01-05-07, 02:47 PM | Yes... eliminate them. I like it! Multiclassing is a little weak anyway without discouraging it further. I would like to see more of it in the party. Couple of things for those of you who have done away with favoured classes: 1. Have you also allowed monks and paladins to multiclass freely? 2. Humans and half-elves now have no advantage in the multiclassing arena. How (if at all) do you compensate them? What about this: (having trouble wording this succinctly :( ) When levelling, humans and half-elves can raise skills from any class they have as if they were class skills. (i.e. they do not have to pay double if any class they have has that skill as a class skill) If anyone can word that better, please do! Or any other suggestions would be much appreciated! |
| CryoSilver01-05-07, 05:35 PM | Humans and half elves treat any skill on any class skill list they possess as a class skill when buying new skills. |
| Cyan Wisp01-05-07, 05:39 PM | Humans and half elves treat any skill on any class skill list they possess as a class skill when buying new skills. Love it. :) :cookie: So, fair enough trade for Favoured Class (any)? |
| DarkRhystar01-05-07, 07:34 PM | Humans and half elves treat any skill on any class skill list they possess as a class skill when buying new skills. So the gist of it is: No favored class experience penalties. Leveling in your favored class gives +1 skill point. Humans and Half-Elves gain the Able Learner (RoD) feat for free at level 1. Final question, do Humans and Half-Elves gain an additional skill point regardless of what class they take? |

Well, I was rewording that other guy's house rule for him. That's not actually a rule in my games. In my games: No XP penalties for multiclassing at all. Leveling in favored class gives +1 skill point A human or half elf's favored class is the class they take at level 1 |

No real need ... hardly anybody ever plays one, whether or not the favored class/multiclass XP penalties are in place. |
| Morwen01-05-07, 09:04 PM | I also do away with favored classes for everything except flavor reasons (ie, if you see a member of X race, he'll be race X's favored class more often than any other class). Multiclass penalties are also removed. They're just silly anyway, considering PrCs don't count.. Monks/Paladins still have their class restrictions fully in place. As for Humans.. So far, I haven't had anyone NOT play a Human in my campaigns. Everyone loves the free feat too much :) |
