| brylcreem05-18-05, 10:25 AM | I play in a pretty small group. We have three regulars and one newbie who is rather intermittant. In any event, we recently decided that we would change DM's in order to give the current DM a chance to play a PC. I have taken over as the new DM, and I tend to run a tighter ship than the past one. Of the group there is one person who just wants to roll some dice and one that was just formerly the DM and have been playing for about three years now. Unfortunately they know the rules about as well as if they had only been playing for 2 months. Does anyone have any experience in trying to bring a pretty lax group into playing more by the rules rather than flying by the seat of their respective pants? I have run one adventure and they were all up in arms about some of the changes I have made. I understand that I need to take into consideration their gaming needs, but at the same time I'm sick of just having very low tech, uninteresting adventures. What are your thoughts? |

Tell them they can file complaints about your "DMing style" with you outside of game time. You should work to find the middle ground to your playing styles so that everyone will enjoy the campaign. If they don't like it, just TPK them until they get the message that your the captain of this pirate ship. Arrrr! |
| VerinBlod05-18-05, 11:05 AM | I had the same thing some time ago. When I took over I had to get rid of a lot of houserules and game habits. Problem was that we ended up playing in the same world so it would be rather difficult to get rid of the houserules. In the end I had a lengthy discussion with the group and we decided to play all core. So my advice is to have a good talk with the players where you explain why you are changing things in respect to their game habits. And tell them to read the rules so that they know what they are doing. |
| Bane05-18-05, 01:20 PM | I had the same type of problem. When I started, one of my players decided what kind of character he wanted to be, and decided that for his concept to be 'playable', his starting ability scores would have to include at least two 18s, and nothing below 14. He also wanted me to give him a book that he could store a lot of other books in, bag of holding style. I looked through my books, and showed him that what he was talking about corresponded almost exactly to the Tome of Books in the Underdark suppliment. For those who don't know, the Tome of Books is a minor artifact. He didn't want that though, the book he was thinking of had twice as many pages. I told him that I wasn't planning on giving him the equivalent of two minor artifacts at level 1, and that if he could get those ability scores out of 28 point buy, good for him. He threatened to disrupt my game if I didn't give him what he wanted, so I told him where he could go, and gave him a couple of suggestions of things he could do when he got there. He wonders why he has so much trouble finding a game. |
