| jejyman10-10-05, 05:39 PM | So my players have picked up a couple of rings that changed their race, one changed from a Human Monk to a Vanara Monk, and one changed from a Human Rogue to a Warforged Rogue. They are Level 4. Now my question is what do I let them have from Human still if anything, they grew up human and now are something different, so they wouldn't know anything about their new races culture. What stats would they keep? should they get the extra stuff from being human or should I drop it? What is your opinion on this situation? Thanks for you help! |
| Catra10-10-05, 08:32 PM | In their minds, they would still be Human, so the feat at first level and all skill points gained would stay. I think the only immediate changes would be Ability scores and saving throws. After a few levels, though, their mentality has shifted from human to their current race, so that extra skill point per level goes away (and doesn't come back when they change again). Any supernatural or racial abilities would come into play probably around halfway to their next level, or when dramatically appropriate. Any racial weapon proficiencies would be added (because it now comes "naturally" to them), but none taken off (because it is learned and familiar) and being human doesn't give any weapon proficiencies anyway. Also, I would still allow their favored class to be "Any" (as per PH p. 14) if they have already chosen their favored class. If not, they gain the favored class of their new race. |

| Rabid Dire Wolverine10-10-05, 08:49 PM | After a few levels, though, their mentality has shifted from human to their current race, so that extra skill point per level goes away (and doesn't come back when they change again). I differ with you on this. I would say this happens immediately, which was pretty much the whole point of my post. ;) |
| Catra10-10-05, 09:07 PM | Ah, I see. But I think that because the race change was not voluntary, and because they are still basically thinking like humans for a while until they get used to their new bodies, they should get that extra skill point for one or two more levels. After that, they're in "adapt to new form" mode, and lose that extra point. |

What the OP described sounds a lot like either the effects of Reincarnation or Polymorph/Shapechange with a permanent duration. I would go along the lines of one of those spells for ideas. |
