How can I get my players to NOT play the chaotic neutral alignment? Most of them have NEVER played lawful. They are always CN or if I let them CE. The occasional player will play LN but only when a monk. I'm sure this is a problem for more DM's than just me. Any ideas how I can make them not play CN ALL THE TIME?

Hmmm...perhaps have law be the most important thing in the world, a certain honor code always needed to be followed, and those who don't are discriminated against and hunted.

do they really play CN or are they just saying it . if my players dont play thier alignments as they are written i tell them that if they keep it up then they will have to change to the closest thing. if they are truely playing CN then let them if they can role play an alignment there is no reason not to but if they are just taking CN cause they think that they'll be able to do whatever they want whenever make them change the alignmant they are unconciously playing. for example i had a CN wizard who was really playing evil i told him to change his aligment since when you stood back and looked at his actions he was playing a guy who was 70% evil and maybe 20% not evil and maybe 10% good he leaned to far to the evil side and he had to change.

I've said it before, and I'll say it one more time...

CN is the biggest cop-out alignment in the entire game

It isn't meant to be, but it ends up that way.

people pick chaotic neutral because they don't see it as a challenge to roleplay. They think they just behave however they want, and that's CN.

Well, I happen to think there's more to it than that. I mean, no one really has to listen to me, but this is the way I see it.

CN to me, is not simply the opportunist that everyone seems to think it is. So many people play CN just so they won't have to live up to any moral or social codes.

They never take into account that a CN might be just as soon to do something selfless as to do something selfish.

Anyways, I don't think you can really make someone pick a different alignment other than what they want, unless....

Pay serious attention to the way they play CN, if they're always the opportunist, stepping on backs and doing whatever the hell they want, then I'm sorry, but......

THATS CE, and it's clearly defined. If that's the way you play, then that's what kind of shift you're gonna take in my campaign.

So are afraid of being an evil alignment, but only when it's written on their character sheet, otherwise, they have no problem exhibiting all the traits of an evil pc.

So what can you do? Not a whole lot. I guess you could set rules beforehand that you're gonna run a lawful campaign, but someone's gonna have a problem with that.

Otherwise, if you're dm enough, call a spade a spade, and give the old alignment shift when you see someone being clearly chaotic evil as opposed to chaotic neutral.

Drop them off in Mechanus and strand them there. Hammer them with anti-chaos spells from enemies that know their alignments- after all, since they are all chaotic, those spells would make sense for an intelligent enemy to use.

Alternatively, toss alignment out the window. Let them act however they want, but also establish real consequences for their actions- every murder they commit brings them one step closer to a high level harmonium squad, or any group seeking justice hunting them down. Not even the very powerful can fight a whole world, and eventually, they will die if they are attacking innocents and flagrantly being sociopathic.
