| Galahdeon04-23-07, 02:07 AM | hey just curious about how other people deal with and play with a chaotic evil character in their party. how do other people play that kind of character and what do you do that convinces the party that their better off keeping you? how does your character deal with Chaotic evil characters in your party and do they do more help or harm? CE Halfling spell theif, and they didn't trust me. mainly the Yoda impersonator and the powergamer ninja didn't like me. I did get into several fights with the powergamer, manily over the fact he did not like me doing what i want. The first was not wanting to let go of my weapon, the secound was a tactical diversion that used him as the decoy, and the fact that i prevented a lightning bolt from zapping the both of use and you think he would care, nope. the yoda look alike just didn't like to be around me maybe beacuse i liked one of the NPCs that wronged him durring the campaign (a gnome shaved off his eye brows in the middle of the night, talk about pathetic). The only one in the party that i liked was the elf with the dirty armor, i did look through his stuff while he was disabled by some anghegs (got a slap for that). Only character i could actualy respect, other than that liked to smart mouth the palidin that lead us. Other than that the seiner guild leader a washed out mage was of some interest to my characte due to the fact he had a powerfull reputation. other than that i like bothering other characters testing their limits as to how much they can handle before the attack or crack. When the yoda look alike and my character where in a cell, he helped me bend the bar enough so that i could slip through in two tries. It took him 4 or 5, well he starts trying to hack down a door (he's a gnome mind blade) I let him, secound he does it a half orc comes after him. i wait in the cell till he gets thrown back in, like hell im going to let a half orc beat me with a club, im unarmed. well he gets thrown back in at 0 hp, I wait a bit then slip out and get close to the half orc. He is facing the other way as i sneak up and I cast charm person, then tell him that the rest of the guards (tanaky) are going to kill him. Being the genius creature he imediatly goes hostile on all 4 of the other guards, two down i throtel the last one against the wall. The whole time the gnome is laying in the cell meditating at 0 hp, i have the half orc get him and bring him out. i though it was halarious to watch the gnome get the **** beat out of him. Well anyone else want to tell how they play CE? |
| Someone04-23-07, 02:24 AM | Kinda curious, how did the other players know yours was CE? It seems mean to be slighting him before he did anything to them. CE should basically do two things: take care of themselves, and hurt things for gain. The chaotic part means not really being part of a team. And the evil part means if somebody else has to lose, that's fine, even preferred. But you don't have to be trivial (or stupid) when CE. The PC could simply decide "nah, I don't have to do something crazy to them". |
| Galahdeon04-23-07, 03:06 AM | They never had a chance to check alignment, the only way they knew it was OOC. As for taking care of myself after i got beaten up for using enlarge person on the ninja he attacked me after the battle. No thanks for absobing the lighting bolt that would of hit him while he was tied up, I could have just dodged it and let him get fried but I decided I wanted to play with the power and use it to kill the BBEG. Well he attacked me then draged me around because he didn't want to carry me, after that we had a statue of dragon calling that we used to escape the falling building ( I guess me calling a red wyrm down to aid us ment something but other than that nothing). After that I left the party assuming that the bastards will get themselves killed in the final battle, I wanted to take the statue with me but the DM's NPC took it from me before i could leave. |
| Kouk04-23-07, 03:59 AM | I can't see any good ever coming from mixing an evil PC with non-evil PCs. The evil ones never get along, and always end up killing other members, being killed by other members, or running off with valuable treasure just to be a jerk. |
| Voran04-23-07, 04:03 AM | Honestly, if you were as big a jerk in character as you come across in describing your group mates, it may not be the alignment thing they're zeroing in on. Plus CE Halfling? Don't you know the cliche? You're supposed to be CN. |
| Etarnon04-23-07, 10:12 AM | I don't typically allow this. In my experience, it's almost always a game-wrecker. |
| celtredleg04-23-07, 10:40 AM | First, try paragraphs, makes comprehension easier. And if you say you didnt come here to get your typeing checked out, well, to bad the rest here have to try and read it. Second, I almost never allow CE. On the rare games I do, everybody has to be CE. And it is only in groups where they where friends before the joined the group. Otherwise sooner or later they always fly apart. Usualy sooner. In this case, sounds like you need a new group. but tell them before the start of the game what kind of CE you want to play. If they are not cool with it, then move on again. Functional evil groups are probably the hardest kind to find. |
| Senevri04-23-07, 01:28 PM | *shrug* My current game has been running for, what, two years now? Party alignment composition: LG, LN, LE, CG, CN. No problems. Even CN folks are capable of making friends and liking people. They're just likely to be fair-weather friends, so to speak. |
| LCD2YOU04-23-07, 01:50 PM | Not always. I had a NE Mage. He and the Paladin were best buds. He always thought the Paladin was a bit too lenient, so he killed. Oh yes, he learned to keep out of the Paladin's LoS before he joined up. Simply put, he kille dthose that the Paladin let go. He was evil but he was evil to make the group stronger, though he had no particular loyalty other than to himself. What he did know was that in a group he was stronger but he really didn't like big groups. He was finally found out when he donned a "Cap" of Opposite alignment. No, the DM didn't have it set out for me, it was in some 3rd party module. Then I confessed to the group who I was and what I did but that since wearing the "Cap", my eyes were open to the evil I had done. |
| evilviper7704-23-07, 02:11 PM | First, try paragraphs, makes comprehension easier. And if you say you didnt come here to get your typeing checked out, well, to bad the rest here have to try and read it. I second this, the only words i could pick out of your first post was "chaotic evil" and "paladin" which instantly rang a bell in my head. Second, I almost never allow CE. On the rare games I do, everybody has to be CE. And it is only in groups where they where friends before the joined the group. Otherwise sooner or later they always fly apart. Usualy sooner. I kinda second this. The only evil alignment i will allow my PCs to have is LE, and i would never allow anybody i didn't know personally to play an evil or CN alignment in my campaign. EVER. Most people play those alignments cause they are immature and want to be able to get away with it, so only if i know personally the person who wants to play will i judge whether it's allowed. NE and CE need to be saved for the big bad guys of the campaign, they just don't have much reason for sticking along in the long term and not doing something to screw over the party; unless they get converted to a nuetral alignment by the graces of the other party members. In this case, sounds like you need a new group. but tell them before the start of the game what kind of CE you want to play. If they are not cool with it, then move on again. Functional evil groups are probably the hardest kind to find. Rather than say find a new group, maybe you should just ask the DM if you could play an evil campaign and then import your character into that campaign and make a new one for the non-evil campaign. Although from what other posters have read about your first post and posted on i think that it would be best for you to just not play an evil character. |
| Elana04-23-07, 02:21 PM | In my experience evil is no problem if both the player and the character are smart. (You won't attack your group members, as you know that you will need them later. Same reason why you don't use them as decoys, but actually protect them (if possible without too much risk to yourself)) But a CE character is of course out for himself firstly. So if you encounter treasure you will try to get a bigger chunk out of it then your comrades, if you see a way to do so. Now CE and stupid character, is asking for trouble. the only thing keeping such a character would be fear that the others would gang up on him, if he gets too outragious. (And in turn is unuseable for prolonged times of gaming, but might be fun in a one shot adventure) |
| RobbyPants04-23-07, 03:03 PM | Plus CE Halfling? Don't you know the cliche? You're supposed to be CN. There's a CE halfling cliche. His name is Belkar (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0011.html)! :P |
| danielinthewolvesden04-23-07, 03:43 PM | If you post here asking for advice, it is only polite to make your post readable. That includes breaking it down into paragraphs, using CAP at the start of sentences and for the word "I" and at least an attempt at proper punctuation and gammar. Thank you. |
| Kezarim04-23-07, 04:19 PM | Hm, i have been playing a CE Changeling Faktotum 10 / Chameleon 5. I joined a group which was already lvl 15, and i only got to play with them every 4-5 sessions. So each session they (believed to) meet a completely different character. The truth: He was an assassin, and almost everybody in the darn country was trying to kill him. Since he assassinated the well-liked king of this very kindgom. (story hook from the DM. i liked it). Of course the party knew my true face from posters etc, so i disguised all the time. Nobody ever noticed. I stayed with the group becuase my char hoped to have better chances leaving the kingdom alive when traveling with them. After a few sessions and about 5 levels, upon hitting 20, we finally got out of the country, and i left to keep on doin my own stuff. Just then the mage of the group gave me a note before i walked away, and said i should read it tomorrow. It read like this: "Dear Alaraun, Gar Uhl, Kezarim and Fertihjun, it was nice traveling with such a well-known person. Feel free to join us again if you please, i'm sure we will get along very well together. Yours, XX" Turned out to be he was a necromancer, CE, hiding in the party since about a OOC-year, since the very first level. i. laughed. so. hard. |
| darkneolink04-23-07, 04:43 PM | Played a CE cleric of erythnull in a 2 partys campaign we had My party (the BBEGs) were a barbarian, a rogue (the "leader" of the group) a sorcerer and a Ranger The other party were the good guys and the leader was a Paladin (altough we have been enemys for a long time he have never found me or how DO I look like n_n) My CE cleric was heavy on the non-fisical stats (4d6 point sistem) So altough the rogue was our leader I was the ruler of the evil party (and everybody knew that) I told all my plans to my partymembers OOC (so they wont get too ****** off when I killed the Barbarian ina suicide mision) I Died the last (mostly because of good plan beforehand) and I died because erythnull killed me for trying to kill him (me evil n_n) So CE doesnt mean just setting random orphanges on fire It means "Hey I want it and i'm going to take it" but also includes planing (I wanted to be a god and I planned everything to take including some quest for my nemesis to destroy some erythnulls artifacts) so there you go |
| Terraneaux04-23-07, 06:50 PM | While I believe that it is possible to play a CE character and have an enjoyable play experience, it is pretty apparent that you need some more practice with roleplaying and DnD mechanics before you can pull it off. |
| The Jake04-23-07, 09:18 PM | they never had a chance to check alignment, the only way they knew it was OOC. as for taking care of myself after i got beaten up for using enlarge person on the ninja he attacked me after the battle. no thanks for absobing the lighting bolt that would of hit him while he was tied up, i could have just dodged it and let him get fried but i decided i wanted to play with the power and use it to kill the BBEG. well he attacked me then draged me around because he didn't want to carry me, after that we had a statue of dragon calling that we used to escape the falling building ( i guess me calling a red wyrm down to aid us ment something but other than that nothing). after that i left the party assuming that the bastards will get themselves killed in the final battle, i wanted to take the statue with me but the DM's NPC took it from me before i could leave. Tell the players to stop metagaming and to start roleplaying. Problem solved. |
| daggeroflath04-23-07, 09:48 PM | Carry a thick sheet of lead around and put it in front of you whenever a paladin tries to detect evil. Claim it's a "halfling token of manhood." and if they question further shout "stop opressing my culture!" Hehehe :D |

Hehehe :D Don't forget to change your name to Belkar and be a ranger with a wisdom below 10 n_nU |
| Voran04-23-07, 11:09 PM | There's a CE halfling cliche. His name is Belkar (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0011.html)! :P Heh. Actually I tend to see him as a class his own. He's like the anti-CN rogue halfling cliche, he's fully embraced his barefoot god of warsiness. |
| Galahdeon04-24-07, 01:29 AM | I was partialy playing CE PC to test my ability as a player, my DM said that he would not consider me CE till i proved that i was capable of pulling it of. Me leaving the party after being attacked by another party member was it, after that he had no dought i could pull off CE. As for the Power gamer he was there to roll all the dice he could with one attack. I talked to my DM about it and he wasn't to happy about it either but he was desperat for players. When we started i didn't announce what alignment I was, I let them guess about it for at bit. The only thing that might have given it away was how i handled things i was a bit brutal with some of the humans and i did wear a lot of black. My party thought it was funny some times others they thought i was just a mean character finaly they learned that i was CE OOC. Im still not sure why the Ninja didn't like me, from what i saw i have to say the PG has very little ability when it comes to playing a character. One of the first battles i was in with him around we ended it with him kicking my character, I stab him for it and then he poisons me with a throwing needle. |
| LCD2YOU04-24-07, 07:16 AM | It is easy for a group to be all CE and still be a group. What you got there is a gang. They care, backup and treat each other nicely, even with compassion. The trick is to let the players know it. They don't screw anyone else over in the group. That is where the NPCs come in. What they do to the rest of society and sentient is horrid. So they act NG to one another but they are still evil and cause all sorts of pain and misery to the rest of the world. |
| jimpaladin04-24-07, 09:01 AM | Like others have said playing CE in a party with a Paladin doesn't cut it for me. However, if you are a CE spell thief then you should play it as any other spell thief EXCEPT that you are concerned with reaching a goal that you and the DM have set out. A CE spell thief would still go ahead and scout for the party because YOU are the only one SMART enough and CAPABLE enough to do it. The rest of the party will pay for your services however when it comes to being able to open locked and trapped chests. To you EVERY chest is locked and trapped:D Also from what you said the rest of the party including the DM used Metagaming against your character. To prevent that in the future try to keep away from silly things like stealing from other pc's or getting into arguements. Remember you can kill them in their sleep but once you do that where do you go to be safe? In my world you would become an NPC imediately and start with a new non-evil pc. Hope you got something from these posts:cool: |
| someonelse81204-24-07, 12:32 PM | it sounds to me like your playing this more Chaotic Neutral. what have you done that is actually evil? if you are traveling with a paladin and co then I assume that you have taken part in good and heroic deeds, despite being a bastard about it. those good deeds balance out the kinds of things you have mentioned and make you neutral. now if you have commited more heinous acts, like sacrificing children to vile gods, or anything else from the BoVD for that matter, then you are truly evil. if your going to be vile about it then I think you should start plotting the murder of your party members, starting with the paladin. find a vile god you like and make him a sacrifice. |
