character conversion [Archive] - Wizards Community

11-23-04, 10:31 PM does anyone know where i can find the rules or a converter that will tell me how to upgrade a 2nd ed character to 3rd ed rules?

11-24-04, 02:20 AM There was one a while back, when 3E came out- it was on the "Character Generator" CD which came with the first or so printing of the 3.0 players handbook.
Basically, keep the same level if single-classed (+1 level per 3 levels of secondary classes if multiclassed), keep the same ability scores (+ bonus for level advancement, and each bracket of 18/% strength is an extra +1 strength i.e. 18/00 = 22 or so), give it some feats and skills. Retain kit if desired but each special ability counts as a feat, and if the ability is actually a 3E class ability the character should instead multiclass and gets the class as a bonus favoured class. Convert any magic items to the nearest 3E equivalent e.g. girdle of storm giant strength becomes belt of giant strength +6 (starting money will probably be off).

11-24-04, 04:53 AM I've found that the easiest method is just to completely remake the character. If you had a thief who tended to get into combat, go ahead and remake her as a fighter/thief. Odds are that some things will have to be changed from what they were mechanically in 2e, but it is pretty easy to keep the spirit of a character the same.
