Character Creation Software [Archive] - Wizards Community

03-01-06, 04:52 AM I don't know if this is the right message board for this question or not. I chose it because I am a DM. I just wanted to know, what is the best character creation software available. By best, I mean the most thorough and most customizable? I am not particularly concerned with cost (however, I prefer to spend no more than $50.00 if possible). Could anyone who responds also be kind enough to tell me why the software being mentioned is the best? I really appreciate any help/advice that anyone is willing to provide. Thank you in advance.

03-01-06, 07:23 PM The only one I'm familiar with is Player Genie (There are others). It works fairly well and is very customizable. They have a free trial at www.dmgenie.com

03-02-06, 08:51 AM Etools is my choice (www.codemonkeypublishing.com). They are licensed by WOTC, can produce output in both 3.0 and 3.5.

Cost: 30 dollars for the base (core books)
Addtl Content: 6-8 per, or bundled packs for 30 or so dollars. They have converted content for FR, as well as nearly all the current 3.5 books

It also has a monster editor, table generator, treasure generator, house rule input, etc.

03-02-06, 09:37 AM There's also PCGen (http://pcgen.sourceforge.net/), the open source generator produced by the folks over at Code Monkey Publishing (http://www.codemonkeypublishing.com/) which you can purchase WOTC approved additional content for, if the OGL version doesn't suit your fancy.

This is my personal preference, but E-Tools does a nice job as well. There are other ones out there, but these two are the only ones I know of that are officially licensed. (OGL compliant with Optional licensed purchases in the case of PCGen)

03-02-06, 09:54 AM I'm a big fan of the generators found at http://www.pathguy.com. It's not downloadable, but its free, and pretty extensive.
