| tobyk31610-17-05, 02:22 PM | My friend, LEKPIC, is having troubles with his message board. He can read the posts but he can't reply or send any of his own. He asked me to post this request for him. Good day to all you message board personalities! I am in need of some MAJOR ASSISTANCE. I am making a haunted tower as an October themed gaming session. I ran the first episode on Saturday, it went great... but now comes the 'themed' horror levels. I want to take a lot of inspiration from the movie "13 Ghosts" (even though the movie was anything but scary, the concept was AWESOME!) especially the Dark Zodiac used in the movie. The campaign has 4-5 players with 16th level equivalent characters in it. I left it to them to come up with whatever they wanted to come up with as long as there was a D&D book to support the character, I got some great PC's to mess with... a Half-Dragon Stonechild Monk, a Dwarven Cleric, a Djinni Paladin, and a Champion of Corellon Latherion. Now on to my predicament... Can you help me for ideas on the 13 ghosts? Here is the Zodiac... 1. The Juggernaut 2. The Hammer 3. The Jackal 4. The First Born Son 5. The Torso 6. The Angry Princess 7. The Bound Woman 8. The Pilgrimess 9. The Torn Prince 10. The Great Child 11. The Dire Mother 12. The Withered Lover I am trying to use undead and outsiders as the main focus. Undead with class levels is OK. What do you think? I don't have the BoVD or the BoED, but if you could tell me your idea and what book it comes out of that would be great. Thank you for your help. |
| HamHam10-17-05, 02:57 PM | 1. Frenzied Berserker. With Deathless Rage. A juggernaut in the classic sense: you just can't stop the damn thing. Make it undead to boot. (CW) 2. Unded Dwarven Cleric. With a big hammer. 3. Werewolf? Vampire or Half-Fiend Werefolf? 12. Ghost with levels in Bard. Best ideas at the moment... |
| tobyk31610-17-05, 03:47 PM | Those are great so far, I found some in the middle to be the most difficult to think of too. 1. The Juggernaut - I thought the Hooded Pupil http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/libris_gallery/84758.jpg or the Hulking Corpse http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/libris_gallery/84759.jpg from the Libris Mortis may work... although I would have to give them levels in something I suppose. Any thoughts? 2. The Hammer 3. The Jackal 4. The First Born Son 5. The Torso 6. The Angry Princess 7. The Bound Woman - I thought perhaps the Wheep http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/libris_gallery/84779.jpg or the Swarm Shifter http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/libris_gallery/84774.jpg might work there. 8. The Pilgrimess 9. The Torn Prince 10. The Great Child 11. The Dire Mother 12. The Withered Lover Again though, they are not powerful enough to give my players a run for their money by themselves, and that is the idea behind each of these monstrosities. |
| scott64410-17-05, 03:49 PM | Nice concept. Wish I'd come up with it myself. Now, I'm all for making a ghost story out of nothing but ghosts. Bear in mind, ghosts are the souls of beings held back for some reason (they may not even remember), with special supernatural powers. Here are some thoughts on how they could be represented. 1. The Juggernaut Barbarian levels, has animation abilities. 2. The Hammer Fighter levels, prefers to attack head-on. 3. The Jackal Rogue levels, magic jar. Prefers to use possession to make groups tear themselves apart from the inside out. 4. The First Born Son Aristocrat levels? 5. The Torso Commoner levels, but has the Fear power. Appears as the name implies. 6. The Angry Princess Appears like some wealthy individual. Makes impossible demands and attacks when denied. Wizard levels perhaps? 7. The Bound Woman Make this one actually not a ghost, but an illusion - bait for a trap by some of the more cunning ghosts. 8. The Pilgrimess Cleric or druid levels. As with the Angry Princess, makes religious demands (make certain she doesn't observe any of the gods the players do) and attacks when they aren't met. 9. The Torn Prince Psion: Telepath. Uses all the PSP's to inflict painful emotions. 10. The Great Child A seemingly innocent being. "Will you help me?" is his catch-phrase. Actually works in concert with the jackal, by giving the party something to argue over. Has bard levels; if high enough, will use fascinate. 11. The Dire Mother The Great Child's protector. Attack the child, and she manifests in full fury. Sorceror levels perhaps? 12. The Withered Lover The most powerful of all the ghosts, but so wrapped up in its own misery it will ignore the party unless they directly approach it. Signs of successful relationships will attract it's attention. Expressions of sympathy will enrage it. Don't know what levels it might have, but definately unpleasant. Defeat any and they'll just reform. They must be cured of whatever curse binds them to the mortal realm. You could consider what would be binding each and what could correct it. |
| HamHam10-17-05, 03:51 PM | Some kind of Psion for the BOund woman might work, make it/her just sit there and beat the sutffing out of them without moving a finger. Master of the Unseen Hand (Complete Warrior) perhaps? |
| wonlee7610-17-05, 03:58 PM | Keeping in mind that I don't even remember what the 13 ghosts look like in the movie, I'm working off of the names of the ghosts. 1. The Juggernaut Modified Corpse Gatherer (MM III). Or just an undead creature with the Frenzied Berserker Prestige Class. 2. The Hammer Wight Barbarian with a maul or greatclub. 3. The Jackal Not sure, don't remember what the Jackal was in the movie. But an uneducated guess, maybe a Morgrim with Rogue/Assassin levels. Sounds nefarious enough. 4. The First Born Son Not sure 5. The Torso If literally this is a torso with arms and a head, an advanced or modified flesh golem. 6. The Angry Princess Ghost Sorceress or Ghost Bard. 7. The Bound Woman Advanced Erinyes or an Erinyes with class levels. Erinyes has that animated rope item that could 8. The Pilgrimess Dread Wraith Ranger? 9. The Torn Prince Spectre Bard or fighter. 10. The Great Child Ogre Ghost barbarian/fighter. Or an Ogre Zombie with class levels (preferably the "quick" zombie variety instead of the zombie template in the MM). 11. The Dire Mother Banshee (MM II) maybe? 12. The Withered Lover Banshee might work here too. Or you could make some kind of modified Succubus. |
| Morka10-17-05, 04:06 PM | I never saw the movie, so I might be completely out of the track. But I might be really creative too... 1. The Juggernaut: A flesh golem. 2. The Hammer: An orc cleric with the Orc and Destruction domains... 3. The Jackal: A were-wolf? 4. The First Born Son: A paladin ghost 5. The Torso: A Brain-in-a-jar? 6. The Angry Princess: A Fiendish Medusa 7. The Bound Woman: A kyton 8. The Pilgrimess: An Ethereal Marauder 9. The Torn Prince: a vampire 10. The Great Child: a mummy? of small size, with a lot of cleric levels? 11. The Dire Mother: A night hag 12. The Withered Lover: An Erinyes or succubus (or inccubus) with bard or rogue levels. |
| Bruunwald10-17-05, 04:08 PM | Well, the Great Child in the movie reminded me a lot of a famine spirit, from Monster Manual II. It's a big, fat ugly ghoul with a mouth that unhinges, that can't stop eating. You could stick a bib on it, and it kind of looks like the ghost from the movie. Just have him moan for his mother and demand to be fed all the time. |
| Kittencaboodle10-17-05, 04:24 PM | Actually, I think they all need to be wraiths... Do they have a wraith template that can be applied? |
| Super_Demolition_Christ10-17-05, 08:45 PM | Most of my ideas require some advancing, DM isnt never simple with me 1. The Juggernaut:Zombie Gray Render 2. The Hammer:Dwarven Werewolf. Not undead, but it is halloweeny 3. The Jackal: Advanced(increased HD) Efreet, not only will this give the Djinn a personal foe, but it says they like to mislead and if you read their descirption they seem jackalesk 4. The First Born Son:Ghost of a Half Celestial (son of a great Celestial) Paladin who has been doomed to never return to his father's plane until he is defeated in combat. 5. The Torso:cant think of anything good besides an undead Cloud Giant Monk O_O or a Marut (an Inevitable of the Inevitability of death) It looks vary Torso strong. Its Extraplaner too. Perhaps it was drawn to this place because of all the undeath there, and was trapped/lost 6. The Angry Princess:Ghost of a Elven Princess who's entire family was killed by her own greed, and she still blames them 7. The Bound Woman: A Female Mummy O_O 8. The Pilgrimess: ?? A vampire Githyanki. She Traveled here to exact revenge on someone (who looks like one of the pcs) but was attacked by a vampire. She is using the building/dungeon/whatever as a place to plan her revenge 9. The Torn Prince: A Ghost of a a powerful prince who was betrayed by his wife for the love of another man. He seeks to be realeased from his horrible world 10. The Great Child: 18HD A flesh golem, who's face is disturbingly simular to the Ghost of the Prince. He seems incapable of intelligent thought but questions "Maaa-ther?" when the party arrives and screams for his Mother while cowing helplessly when reduced below 20 hp 11. The Dire Mother:Before comming across her,the Pcs can hear manick laughter and talk. its a womans voice who is apparently talking to someone who isnt talking back. If question she raves about her riches and her "wonderful party" that involves the rotting animated corpses of apparent dead nobles. She asks how her "son" is and if questioned about it flaunts about "how brilliant it was that I replaced my incompetent husband with a greater man." She apparently sought eternal life for her son and herself with the aid of the powerful necromancer. The smell of blood reaches past the smell of decayed flesh and to the characters noses. It becomes apparent that she is a vampire. and uses necromatic powers to use her "guests" to defend her 12. The Withered Lover: A powerful Necromancer (17thlevel i guess). Garbed in Clothing that was once grand but now decreped and torn. This man is severily withered and old, his skin pratically hanging from his bones. He explains how he seduced a beautiful maided into his cluches, useing her false lover for him to empower a ritual that granted him immortalitiy. But it was more a curse than a blessing. Though he did not die from his age, it still scratched away at form. He grew bitter over the centuries, his wife staying beautiful, and him becoming more decreped. Some unseen force kept him from taking his own life, and he now has turned his sorrow into hatred. Realishing to torment others as he is tormented. |
| lekpic10-17-05, 11:03 PM | 1. The Juggernaut - Flesh Golem17 2. The Hammer - Ogre4/Bbn1/Clr3/Rav9 3. The Jackal 4. The First Born Son 5. The Torso 6. The Angry Princess - Erinyes5/Ftr12 7. The Bound Woman - Kyton16/Bbn1 8. The Pilgrimess 9. The Torn Prince 10. The Great Child 11. The Dire Mother 12. The Withered Lover |
| The Master Weaver Is Warped10-20-05, 05:40 PM | My ideas are in bold. Levels and races are up to you. 1. The Juggernaut - Flesh Golem17 2. The Hammer - Ogre4/Bbn1/Clr3/Rav9 3. The Jackal rogue/assasin 4. The First Born Son The one who was sacrified...litch? 5. The Torso use an ooze but describe it as gooey, bloody puddle around the dismembered torso. 6. The Angry Princess - Erinyes5/Ftr12 7. The Bound Woman - Kyton16/Bbn1 8. The Pilgrimess monk with a vow of poverty? 9. The Torn Prince Blackguard. Nothing like a torn-out heart to cause a paladin to fall from grace. 10. The Great Child psion, looks weak but completely manipulative. 11. The Dire Mother A shape changer/alternate form a dire bear. Never, ever mess with her cubs. Thing is, she is Medea and she already killed her cubs... 12. The Withered Lover I'll second the bard for this one. Orpheus who failed to return with is lover from Hades. Add some sort of withering attack. Crushing dispair/song of discord etc. |
| Some_call_me_Tim10-20-05, 06:25 PM | 3. The Jackal When i hear "The Jackal" I think of Anubis the Egyptian God of the Underworld. Perhaps a Gnoll Mummy Lord, that would be CR 15, add an extra level of cleric. Hyena/jackal close enough to work. 11. The Dire Mother A Formian Queen 12. The Withered Lover I'm thinking a night hag mounted on a night mare, using polymorph to appear as Lady Godiva. This would also work well following the Mummy Lord above as the Heartstone she carries could cure the mummy rot. Of course you will have to pimp this lowly CR 9 up a bit. The other obvious choice is a succubus, but I'm not sure how to make it a suitable challenge. |
| Ongorth10-20-05, 06:45 PM | 6. The Angry Princess: We can do some good things here, once we decide exactly where we want to go. Are we going with the classic spoiled rich girl (Veruca Salt) type character? If so, something with an explosive temper would be good. The wilder class has all the ingredients to dish out a whole lot of power at once. Barbarians are the paragons of angry, and since its a ghostly power, it can be both misleading and perfectly acceptable to have a prim and proper (even petite) lady turn into a superstrong bloodthirsty beast when her ire is activated. Possible accompanied by an altered (non-mechincal) change in appearace, which, described well can be very rewarding. If we want to keep the princess herself as a sort of weak creature, we can just make her an offensive paper tiger and give her a sort of enforcer. Maybe its a pet (Advanced Half Fiend Fire Wolf). Maybe its a bodyguard (Just about anything). Maybe its her father (a particularly exaspirated Mummy). Whatever the case, this creature is called forth to her aid whenever her (ridiculous) desires aren't met. But, it doesn't have to be a spoiled brat. This princess could be angry for any number of reasons. Maybe her assention to the throne was blocked by an unworthy sibling. Here, we can bring in #9 along with the possibility of playing the two against each other. Ghosts are known for being egocentric after all. In this case, the princess should be competent at her craft (that is, have class levels placing her on par with the party) so that it doesn't seem that she is merely being a brat that doesn't deserve daddy's kingdom. |
