needs a little more umph for one of my PCs. we are early on in the campaign and i have a PC who, eventually will become a swashbuckler (provided he lives that long, so level 1) long story short, pirates came to the port of coral swell and pillaged the town, taking children and young adults, leaving only elderly women. Town burned, the PC was trying to protect some younglings when they were taken, he saw his family murdered during the struggle, he managed to evade capture, because pirates were dumb of course *wink* and now he wants to set off after them in a row boat to regain the children. he needs something in the way of why take the next step... after the children why continue, aside from revenge, does this make sence? any ideas? right now the morning after the raid has taken place, he is gathering supplies, about to meet up with the other PCs. and a PC played by me. (a seasoned swashbucker, in order to train him) wait, nevermind, i answered my own thought process. isn't free form thought writing fun....

thanks for listening.

Me too. Now I demand compensation for my efforts. Give me all your chocolate chip, white chocolate, double macadamia nut cookies! I demand that you do this or I will be forced to eat my own cookies from the double batch I made earlier...and no one wants that.

In case you do get stuck in the future, try to "keep a step ahead". If he is going to recover the children, let him succeed, but one is still missing. Perhaps it was already sold into slavery?

You can also introduce new villians who are even worse than the last ones. These pirates may have been working for the DASTARDLY DUKE. The Duke hired the pirates to kill his own people for nefarious purposes. Perhaps he knew that a legitimate claimant to his position was hiding in that town, etc. Or it could be even worse.

And even if a PC becomes unmotivated, there is a good chance they will help you think of something to keep them motivated.
