On telnet MUDS like Darkmists (darkmists.org 2222), the players can tell what level they are and what path they take by the name that follows their name. For example, 5th level warriors could be called "N the Viking". Rangers, after a while, are called (for a short time, or course) "N the Marksman of the Deep Forest".

I know it's not in the Core Rulebooks. Is there any known system like this for D&D that is in a supplement book?

1st edition comes to mind. Some of that mud code is really starting to show it's age :).
