| Nithendil01-11-05, 04:36 AM | This sounds like it should be in the “What’s a Player to Do section?”, but I wanted the advice of DMs. The current party is all level 3 and consists of: ranger/druid fighter cloistered cleric (me) Originally I was going to play a cleric/wizard in a new campaign starting up, and that is the class I told the DM I was going to play. So, I do something somewhat stupid and right before the 1st session decide to just play a cleric, as I figure the rogue/sorcerer can fill in the arcane role, using scrolls and wands, etc. The DM oks me just playing as a cleric. So, a total of one session goes by, and I find out the player playing the rogue is leaving, which leaves the party without both a trapmonkey and a mage. Knowing this group’s history, it will be quite awhile before we get another player; in the past two years we have met only a couple of people that even wanted the slightest thing to do with a mage and history tells me if we even do find another person they will likely be some type of fighter. So naturally, an NPC would be the next choice, however, a rogue/mage would be a bit too much of a spotlight for an NPC. What I would like to do is my original idea of a cleric/wizard so we have both these archetypes covered, and we can just get an NPC rogue. However, when I went to just cleric, I moved my stats to DEX and CON, so multiclassing as a sorcerer or wizard for this current character is no good (10 INT and 10 CHA). So, what I would like to do is ask the DM, if as a one-time thing, if I could switch my stats around (we used point buy) so that the next level I could take a level of wizard. However, I feel bad about this as I have technically already switched my class, and we’ve already had the 1st session. I’d even be willing to take a stat penalty or class deduction, such as no familiar. It wouldn’t change the character’s history, as he is a cloistered cleric (a skill-based cleric with a few mage spells from Unearthered Arcana), and studied a bit of necromancy at a mage school already, so wizardry isn’t too far off. As a DM, would you allow me to switch my stats around, or should I just cough up and deal with my mistake and not bother my DM any further? |

Just explain to him what you posted here, I bet he would understand. Maybe he will let you rearrange your whole PC from level 1-3. But, you won't know until you ask him. |
| ShadowDragon868501-11-05, 04:56 AM | Since you're trying to do two people in what should be a four person group, I would suggest he simply let you both play two characters. |
| Nalampus01-11-05, 05:01 AM | Imo the DM wants a succesful campaign as much as you do. If the problems you're having are this insurmountable he should be willing to work with you to help make your party work. My advice... talk to him. |
| tackleberry01-11-05, 09:15 AM | depending on the skill and adaptability of the DM (or whether he is an evil git!) you should not have to change character nor the DM introduce an NPC. The adventures should be geared towards the party members and the Dm knows this. There is no hard rule that states that there HAS to be an arcane spell caster in the group or any of the other core classes - many campaigns have flourished with nought but fighters or rogues - its a different kind of game but still d&d. further, there is nothing wrong with a wizard with 10 INT, he just has to make up for his weaknesses in other areas - which calls for inventive and imaginative role playing! ahhh the opportunities! |
| sandgriffin01-11-05, 10:48 AM | well it depends on weather your DM is an ok guy, or lazy a lazy DM would have you pick up the slack, he would hate to NPC a complex class all the time, more likely he would just let you do whatever you think is right If he is diligent, well, a diligent DM can overcome any problem, but i dought he would turn down help in eather case only someone who is mean would drop the burden on you, expesaly sense your trying to help. |
| Nithendil01-12-05, 09:34 PM | LOL, thank you all for your advice. Looks like the DM has to quit because of work conflicts, and I'm taking his place, so this character isn't really needed any longer. |
