| Mordmorgan the Mad11-05-04, 04:26 PM | Check out the following: BREW POTION [ITEM CREATION] Prerequisite: Caster level 3rd. Benefit: You can create a potion of any 3rd-level or lower spell that you know and that targets one or more creatures. Brewing a potion takes one day. When you create a potion, you set the caster level, which must be sufficient to cast the spell in question and no higher than your own level. The base price of a potion is its spell level x its caster level x 50 gp. To brew a potion, you must spend 1/25 of this base price in XP and use up raw materials costing one half this base price. When you create a potion, you make any choices that you would normally make when casting the spell. Whoever drinks the potion is the target of the spell. Any potion that stores a spell with a costly material component or an XP cost also carries a commensurate cost. In addition to the costs derived from the base price, you must expend the material component or pay the XP when creating the potion. |

| Antigone11-05-04, 05:58 PM | The only way I know of that you can get a potion of a spell above 3d level (according to the RAW, that is) is through the Master Alchemist PrC from Magic of Faerun. Of course, that's also assuming you use FR and PrCs. And they didn't update it in PGtF -- don't know whether that means they nixed it or thought it didn't need to be updated. Maybe they'll update it in Complete Arcana? But whatever you do, I wouldn't let them mimic that PrC with the alchemy skill, even though the class is called Master Alchemist. As trapspringer pointed out, that's a no go. |
| Lordofthebean11-05-04, 08:33 PM | The ability to produce potions above 3rd level is extremely powerful, and should be left to the master alchemist. As Antigone pointed out, it was not reprinted. I don't really think it needs updating (besides the skills). The Craft (Alchemy) skill is exclusively for making alchemical items like sunrods and poisons, not potions. |
| Bloodtide_the_Red11-06-04, 05:30 AM | He has this option. Take the feat-Craft Wondrous Item. Then he is free to make any oil or 'potion' of any spell level he wishes. He could make an Elixir of Heal, for example. BT |

He could make an Elixir of Heal, for example. BT I disagree. While I can't find anything in the rules that says you can't do this, I think the implication of having one feat that allows you to make potions of up to 3d level and another feat that allows you to enchant items like carpets and clothing pretty clear. I'll even go so far as to say allowing a PC to use Craft Wondrous Item to circumvent the level restriction on Brew Potion would be an inappropriate house rule. Please note that I mean no offense, I just disagree. Strongly. |
