| rulerofDarkness02-19-08, 06:11 PM | Alright, I've searched this forum high and low for a topic about this. I have found none. So please fellow DM's could post Examples of PC's developing "Intimate" relations with eachother as well as ways to deal with it? I'm not having any porblems with this currently, but other DMs are I'm betting. So I made this topic as a refrence point for them.... |

| inthesto02-19-08, 06:14 PM | "You guys sleep together. It's morning." Seriously, I don't see any reason why it should get any more time than that. |
| Drackthor02-19-08, 06:21 PM | The link above didn't work for me. What was it linking to? |
| aotrscommander02-19-08, 06:26 PM | You probably can't find anything because such topics tend veer into the Mature Topic territory. (You may find this thread moved there, depending on how it goes). Myself and a lot of other folks just fade to black when a sexual encounter occurs, something like "okay, you have an [adjective] time, moving on..." So long as your players are not and Beevis and Butthead maturity level (heck, even if they are), that will suffice; it also has the added advantage of not creeping out anyone else at the table and so is relatively "safe". If your players want to have a more detailed event1, then you're definately in mature territory and you'd better make absolutely sure everyone else at the table is happy with this. If the thought of in-character sex (or just in-character romance for that matter, to a slightly lesser extent) makes anyone uncomfortable then DO NOT allow it. (Just ask the players you'd rather they didn't go there because [x] is uncomfortable with it, and assuming they're not complete asshats, they should understand.) I think that's all can be safely said on the DM boards at any rate. 1I nearly said "blow by blow" and boy, is that ever the wrong phrase to use in this context! |
| VulcanStormwrath02-19-08, 06:26 PM | The mature section if you're over 18 you can go there, if not, see post #3 |
| Etarnon02-19-08, 07:08 PM | Most groups don't go there, and just "Fade to black" then resume with"Kirk puts his boots on." Good luck. |
| themocaw02-19-08, 07:39 PM | I was once in a sci-fi campaign (Operation: Rimfire) where two players looked at each other, decided their characters spent the night together, then moved on after the casual fling. It wasn't until three months later when the campaign was over and I was collecting character sheets that I looked at the ages they'd written down. The guy: 45 year old Intelligence Operative. The girl: 16 year old psion. (Plays "Don't Stand So Close to Me" by the Police). Seriously, though, unless you want to make it a plot point, I echo the prior sentiment: "Okay, you guys go to bed. Fade to black. It's now morning. Wizard, what spells are you going to memorize today?" If they insist on playing it out more "in-depth" and you're not comfortable with that, push the fast forward button and tell them to just move on, you don't have the time to spare. Afterwards, take them aside and tell them your concerns. Most players, unless they're total butteats, will be happy to comply. |
| serpentcross02-25-08, 08:12 AM | For me usually is up to the player if they want to assume they sleeped togheter or they want to be more descriptive. I tand to prefer the more descriptive way because it gives the chance for everyone to pull off a knife and sink it into the other. But I never asked for detailed description of the act .. I just want to know anytime who has the hands free, who is turning his back to the other and things like that. Anyway .. my group has taken part into a Succubus-Heavy Storyline I do not force players into a storyline... they have a choice, there are several storylines in my gameworld developing out of the player attention (right now two BBEG have been ignored by the group and they are breaking havoc in Silverymoon and Amn while the group is pursuing a storyline in Cormyr) As one of the players is a Malcanthet cleric and the party members are all pawns in a great succubus War (Shami-Amourae Vs. Malcanthet Vs. Grazzt) they tend to have a lot of sexual themed encounters |
| cjhobbitbane02-25-08, 09:37 AM | Most people choose to do the fade to black thing. but if you want more detailed stuff go ahead. if you want REALLY detailed stuff, somebody wrote the book of erotic fiction for that.... its hard to find but the info is pretty good. |
| pmurray@bigpond.com02-25-08, 09:40 AM | "You guys sleep together. It's morning." Seriously, I don't see any reason why it should get any more time than that. Damn straight. If they want to roleplay it out, they can go join a Vampire, the Masquerade game. |
| pmurray@bigpond.com02-25-08, 09:43 AM | The guy: 45 year old Intelligence Operative. The girl: 16 year old psion. (Plays "Don't Stand So Close to Me" by the Police). meh. Doesn't reep me out nearly as much as "The Spy Who Loved Me", that scene right at the end with a 65-yo Roger Moore making his sex face at a 20-something actress. Gag me. |
| Wight_Chocolate02-25-08, 10:15 AM | What exactly is this thread supposed to be for? The way to "deal with it" (the wording suggests that this is for someone who doesn't want it to happen) is to tell them to cut it out. If someone wants to go into great detail about how they've got their tongue down another character's throat or anything else down anything else, tell them you're not interested in hearing it and that you're moving on. If they really must have their little fantasy fling then they can take it elsewhere. To their own little gaming table. Away from you, and far out of hearing range. Seems perfectly simple to me. Seriously, anyone who starts trying to pull this kind of thing without asking if everyone's alright with it first, in the middle of a game that hasn't specifically been designated as inclusive of this kind of content, is probably a very questionable individual that you shouldn't be gaming with in the first place. A D&D campaign should not be presumed "intimate" until it is declared otherwise. |

Wight, we've been over this, loosen up a bit man, you're too uptight, it seems fairly obvious that the players dont have a problem with this, or the OP would have mentioned something like " my other players are starting to feel awkward", he didnt, so let go a bit. |

Stop following me. I am not "uptight" and I do not have any pickles where they should not be, despite what you seem to be convinced of. Find another record to play. The original poster did not mention that his players were feeling awkward because the original poster isn't experiencing this issue. To refer to what he did say, we are discussing the "problem" of characters getting intimate and how one might "deal with it". This strongly suggests that the situation being referred to is when players start behaving like this and, in fact, causing "problems". If the other players or the DM did not have "problems" with it then it would not be a "problem", and thus there would be no need to "deal with it". But hey, if you insist, I'm sure I can post an alternative for what to do about the situation if everyone's A-OK with it and you're in a game where mature content is freely permitted. Here it is: NOTHING. Wasn't that helpful? |
| WizO_Brak02-25-08, 03:26 PM | Just a reminder to keep personal vendetta's out of the public boards. If you must say something personal to someone, please use PM's. ~Brak |
| Captain_Madrick02-25-08, 06:17 PM | **Not a serious solution** The male party member suffers a terrible attack, which removes all of his most favourable pieces of anatomy... There, now the players can only wish. |
| Loren Pechtel02-25-08, 06:45 PM | "You guys sleep together. It's morning." Seriously, I don't see any reason why it should get any more time than that. Exactly. There are rare occasions where it might be necessary to dig into it more but I have yet to see one. Normally it is something to be avoided in RPG's because it almost certainly doesn't involve the whole party--you're going to be neglecting the rest of the group. |
| StSteven02-25-08, 06:47 PM | **Not a serious solution** The male party member suffers a terrible attack, which removes all of his most favourable pieces of anatomy... There, now the players can only wish. **Not a serious reply** But they better be real careful with the wording. |
| Naomi_Escen02-25-08, 07:34 PM | The only attention my DM pays to it, if it goes beyond friendship like my character (drow) has with a rakshasa, is rolling a d100 to see if the girl gets pregnant. |
| Mad_Jack02-26-08, 03:49 AM | There's only been a few occasions where there was any sort of in-game romance in the games I've been involved with. In almost all cases, it never went past the fade-to-black, cut-to-the-next-morning scene, just by unspoken general accord. There were only ever two cases where it went beyond that, and the first was actually a group effort by the entire party to hook the two players up out-of-game because they were both bang-your-head-against-the-wall shy and the only way they were brave enough to flirt was in character. (Gods, did that take forever - If the party had been anywhere near a library, they would have found a dating guide on one of the shelves...) The one time I really had players get involved in an in-game romance that was going into too much detail for the other players (and they wouldn't take the subtle hint/outright request/brick-to-the-head to stop), I sent in a bunch of orcs with Epic Rings of Perfect Timing, and caught the two of them literally with their pants down. "What do you mean I just got hit by an *ORC*??? My AC is 29!" "No, your AC is 12. As you just explained in such great and exacting detail, your armor is on the ground over there, your shield is hanging from that tree, and your little friend just tore off your magic items with her teeth..." I told them that I'd politely asked them to turn it down, the other players had told them to not go there, and since they hadn't taken the hint, that if they wanted to continue to use my gaming time as foreplay they were perfectly welcome to do so in the back seat of their car out in the driveway while the rest of us were playing a serious game. (The two of them later joined a LARP vampire game just so they could make out with other people "in character"...) In-game romance should be handled like any other in-game issue - if it seems like it might become a part of the game, particularly if it might be a problem, it should be discussed between the players and DM when it first comes up or is brought up, and a group decision should be made and followed through by all involved. In my personal opinion, if it does occur in-game, any serious flirting or foreplay should happen off-stage, and the fade-to-black scene should be the default situation beyond that. |
| I_roll_ones02-26-08, 04:30 AM | If it's a guy...Have him roll his dexterity to see how he's doing. If he fails, the girl can make a bluff check to hide a reaction to an awful attempt. And I'm curious what developing means, and what is dealing with it. Is dealing with it nipping it in the bud, or letting it go on ahead? |
| geekling02-26-08, 11:05 AM | OK, this needs to be split into two. Flirting / Romance. Treat it no different than any other in character interaction. Two characters wanting to spend their time telling each other that 'You're the snoochiepoochiepoo!' 'No, you ARE the cuddlywuddlymoochiepoo!' Is no different than the str-based and the dex-based fighter having a running argument about 'using girlie-blades, no real man would be seen with' vs. 'sword compensating for lack of manhood.' More physical involvement. Fade to black is usually the best. Or at least fade to grey(1) if your group is a bit more toward the humourous side. (1)Same as fade to black, but everyone else gets a listen check. :P |
| cjhobbitbane02-26-08, 11:16 AM | (1)Same as fade to black, but everyone else gets a listen check. :P oh snap! im totally doing this for flavor at tomorrow's session. Players make listen check* Success: As you walk down the hall you hear banging, moans, and slight yelps coming from behind the doors, it sounds almost as if a lady is in pain. Failure: You walk down the hall to your room. |

I'm rather fond of the: Success; that night you were woken up from your sweet dreams nth times, by the sound of a rythmic creaking and banging of wood against the wall to the adjoining room. |

| kelvinaw27302-26-08, 01:31 PM | Damn straight. If they want to roleplay it out, they can go join a Vampire, the Masquerade game. Oh come on, everyone knows vampires don't have any interest in that ... ... Werewolves and mages on the other hand ...;) Seriously though, there are several variants of inter-character relationships: Romance: This normally doesn't cause problems as romance is usually somewhat chaste in nature. It's usually a viable outlet for developing in-game and in-character directions that are a normal course of events without offending anyone. Flirting: Flirting carries a PG certificate, it's fine if everyone is comfortable with a little innuendo, and can result in some OOC jokes that can lighten the tension sometimes. If players aren't comfortable (which can happen particularly if the genders of the players and their characters do not agree) then players should be prepared to either put a lid on it or take it from the general table. In Depth: This is the Adult rated stuff, players have to be mature and everyone comfortable if they want to go here. Mostly it can be happily handled by inference - you all know what went on in the bedroom, you don't need a graphic account. Possibly a Listen check as described above, but generally it's on a case of not having to spell it out. I personally feel that if people want that kind of thing they can play RPGs on the internet that cater for those tastes. It comes down to what everyone at the table is comfortable with, and how they want to play. Most of the time I find that it's the immature gamers that want the graphic content that they are least able to deal with. My advice to them? Find a nice SO. |
| Janzen02-26-08, 01:39 PM | This shouldn't really be a issue if your group is mature enough about it. Not the perfert example but one of my Sorceress came from the union of my last Sorcerer and a female farmgirl NPC. Now the really bad part is that in my own opinion... my group of players wouldn't take this like mature adults. They would see it as the chance to breed some super PC for future campaigns =/ ...then I'm like wtf |
| iserith02-26-08, 01:51 PM | See, this is why I bring a sandwich bag full of massage oil to every game session. My players laughed at me, but now I know I am not alone. Thank you. Thank you. |

| Zog_Jakome02-26-08, 02:22 PM | oh yes. We are the mature type of gamers. it was like that since I started playing. in fact one of my first sessions was... "you get raped by a female mountain giant." I'll leave the details out for obvious reasons, but I had a blast. By the way I started playing when I was like 15. now 8 years later although rare when there is an intimate scene there are details of how it is done but not minute by minute, position by position we usually just get it started finish it and move on. in fact we even pity those that fade to black. But if details are not your cup then don't let me get in the way of playing the way you want to play. |
| themocaw02-26-08, 05:57 PM | ROFL, mind if i sig that? Go for it. |
