A group of adventurers set out to obtain information from a dragon.
They've been attempting to locate the evil cult members and have heard that the dragon would know.

The cult members are worried that the adventurers might receive aid from the dragon and hurry to speak with the dragon before the adventurers do.

When the adventurers arrive at the lair they see the cultists negotiate with the dragon. These cultists are really bad at it!
The dragon by this time has become terribly annoyed.

The adventurers and the cultists attack each other.
:mymy:
The dragon then attacks them all.
Now all involved have two enemies to fight.

How on earth do you calculate the EL or something like that?

Disclaimer: The above is only an example and nothing to do with my current campaign.

Edited away for me being tired and not having any caffiene yet...

Yeah what Elandra said... that seems pretty good although I think I would just give a flat 1/2 XP for each of them... if the PCs can get the dragon to do there Dirty work I wouldnt deduct xp from the players.

You award XP for the CR of individual creatures encountered. The EL would depend on what amount of force the dragon and the cultists put into fighting the PCs. If the dragon decides to attack the PCs almost to the exclusion, it will be a very tough encounter.

I would just try to decide which enemies the PCs defeat. You may include eneimes when dividing the XP. For example, if the PCs finally defeat the dragon, but the cultists did 1/2 the damage to the dragon, I would split the XP that the PCs receive in 1/2. (1/2 would also be split among the cultists, but they aren't going to get to keep in long, now are they?) ;)

If they dragon does 3/4 of the damage to the cultists, the party would only get 1/4 XP for them. Or I would effectively reduce their CR to reflect damage taken.
