Long story short, my groups current DM is causing truoble, and the game hasn't even started yet. History: After our last campaign with this particular DM, we all sat him down for a short discussion about game balance and fairness. His idea of DMing was to throw challenging [up to 3 times our CR] monsters at the party, and change the world/NPC's/anything else at his own whim. Example: The DM played 'planescape:torment' for half an hour. Then decided this setting was far cooler then the usual world that we all helped him build. He proceeded to nerf the party [remove magic items, levels, etc] and even killed several of the characters [one of them mine] with large NPC's that 'simply had it in for the party I guess' all in the name of 'they wouldn't fit into the setting anyway'. He then gave us the one sided option of jumping intoa portal to arrive in sigil 'well you dont have to jump into the portal, but then you'd have to fight that angry looking tarrasque' [We were lv 6]. We simply walked away from teh game. Current: After our small talk [we kept it short and simple, so as not to come off too mean] the DM will either not give us a ruling on anything 'it's up to the players' or will tell us something he's changed to our world 'I just read the rules for wild magic, now I made a fe changes, but their so awesome, I'm puttin wild magic zones everywhere in the world, in fact, lets make the whole world one magic zone'. Now, we are all starting at level 1, and the DM will not even tell us how he wants us to roll stats, generate equipment or even what books we may use, we ask and all we get is 'it's up to the players' and we all agree that 'it's up the DM for balance and equality' |

You know it's going to end in pain and suffering.) you can get together, as players, and decide on the character creation rules. Otherwise it sounds like you've done all you can do as human beings, short of tying him down and forcing him to your viewpoint. My actual suggestion is for someone else to DM. Yours is obviously not up to chops. |

| kelvinaw27308-07-06, 09:26 AM | When he says that it is 'up to the players' what he means is: 'My feelings are hurt that you didn't play the UBER-COOL campaign that I had planned, so now as you want player power I'll give it to you and see how you like it. Dump this guy and DM yourself. |
| Twisted Puppy08-07-06, 09:38 AM | Could be kelvinaw273 is right, I've seen that happen before: someone gets petulant when they are given any criticism at all, no matter how constructive or well-intended. Or it could be he's really trying to work with you, though in that case one would think he'd at least say something about stat generation. Bottom line, from your comments his heart doesn't seem to be in running a game. In which case you're better off with someone who will make mistakes from inexperience but is at least willing to learn from them and try to improve. I am curious as to how long he's been DMing, and the ages of the players. Sometimes that information explains a lot. If he's in high school and your previous campaign was the first he ran, that's one thing. If he claims to be experienced, that's another. |

Well the group ranges from 16 [him] to 24 [one of our other DM's who enjoys playing more then Dming]. This would be his, 4th campaign, 2nd outside of school. Dump this guy and DM yourself. Well, funny that you should say that. My first level wizard cast his first spell, turned out that a sleep spell in a wild magic zone will generally become an empowered fireball. Long story short, I made the first, and the last action of the campaign, wiping out our enemies and the party. I was swiftly reinstated as the groups DM [I wanted a break and to be a player again], I hope I'm up to par after this whole little ordeal though. |
