+1 spellcasting class stacking rules. [Archive] - Wizards Community

05-23-05, 04:19 AM I'm wondering what the breakdown on rules is for PrC's that simply have "+1 level of existing spellcasting class" without specifying which type. I'm almost certain there's a rule somewhere that wouldn't allow that to apply to something like the Mystic Theurge, thus advancing two classes, but I wondering where this is clearly expressed.

If one went from Mystic Theurge to Dweomerkeeper, for example, I assume you pick whether you want to advance your arcane or divine casting class at each level, though the "Spells per day/Spells known" section suggest you would just add your Dweomerkeeper level to your Mystic Theurge level to determing your spells per day and spells known, but I feel like I'm kissing a key word or a key rule from some other source.

05-23-05, 04:26 AM Any class with its own spellcasting progression works. Note that Mystic Theurge is not a spellcasting class, as it grants neither spells known nor spells per day (more importantly, it has no spell list). Ur-Priest is a spellcasting class.

You could use Mystic Theurge to progress in casting if you're a Blackguard/Assassin, for example, but you could not use it to progress as an Archmage/Thaumaturgist. Likewise, you could use Archmage to advance Assassin casting, but not Mystic Theurge.

A wizard/cleric/mystic theurge has a wizard's arcane spellcasting, and a cleric's divine spellcasting. Both spellcasting progressions have been increased by the mystic theurge levels, but the character has no "mystic theurge" spellcasting levels. When another prestige class adds to a single spellcasting progression, it can only add to either the wizard or the cleric spellcasting levels, as there isn't anything else to choose from.

05-23-05, 03:30 PM I understand. So you could progress Ur-Priest/Sublime Chord with Mystic Theurge. Oh my. That hurts my head. But I understand it now. Mystic Theurge isn't a spellcasting class, strictly speaking, it simply stacks with a spellcasting class. Thanks!
