| JStaton06-05-07, 02:49 AM | My character in our DM's 2nd edition homebrew world has the opportunity to get 1 wish from a God, anything except to become a god himself. Currently his level is 20 Ninja/10 Fighter. He has an extreme hate for 3 Vampire sisters, and their seemingly immortal lich mother that is so overpowered (DM's first character in this world), and theyve been introduced a lot lately so I think they will be in the parties face soon enough. I was thinking, perhaps I could ask for a ability such as Soul Strike...so that a Lich would easily be defeated, If I could destroy its soul...or anyone else for that matter. What else could I ask for? |
| Ack06-05-07, 04:26 AM | For those four characters to be utterly and totally destroyed with no hope of return. Alternatively (and this is nasty) for those four to be "brought back to life" as commoners, with all the memories of their past lives but none of the abilities (that is, they'll remember having spells but have no capability to cast them). :D |
| Drag0nUL06-05-07, 04:53 AM | If godhood is out of the question, can you ask to become a demigod, at least?:) Joke aside, what I would ask would be: spellcasting and turn undead as a cleric of your level, and this ability to advance as you continue to gain levels. I know this is immensely powerful, but would be well within a god's power to grant(since he grants spells and abilities to his clerics), and since your DM said anything... |
| Yokomohoyo06-05-07, 04:57 AM | Wish to become a Mystic Thurge of your same level :OMG! Just kidding, wish to have either a weapon that can slay theese beasts (holy + flame maybe) or wish to have the liches phylactery in your hands to distroy it. |

I know this is immensely powerful, but would be well within a god's power to grant(since he grants spells and abilities to his clerics), and since your DM said anything... You see, this is not thought out well (not being mean). A DM can construe this request in a different light and say to the PC "ok, you are now a cleric of lvl 30 status.... lose your ninja and fighter classes." Wish is crazy and it really depends on the DM allowing the Wish as to what extremes the spell will be taken to. You are right in saying that the request is probably too powerful and if that is your first reaction then chances are that a good DM will find some way to balance out the request to keep the Wish spell manageable. |
| Drag0nUL06-05-07, 06:03 AM | You see, this is not thought out well (not being mean). I know it is not thought out too well:) It was a basic idea. In order to prevent a DM from twisting it, a Wish text should sound like the texts you find in law books (covering every possible aspect of the problem). As for the power issue, granting a PC 'anything but godhood' is already overpowered, if we are to take the text literally, so I assume the DM has thought of something to balance it out; if not this can turn bad quite quickly. |
| bob_the_great06-05-07, 10:00 AM | if you simply want the lich gone you can wish for its phylactery to be destroyed. if he's really going to fight you just poofing his character dead, have the lich sent to ravenloft. he'll fit in there, and getting back is really difficult. you could wish to radiate a 10' aura of pure holy energy (and make sure that, unlike protection from evil, you can force it upon enemies). |
| EvilDeathBee06-05-07, 10:03 AM | SInce this is from a Diety, and not a Djinn, this would be a Miracle, not a wish. There shouldn't be too many problems with wording, as good aligned Dieties aren't usually total jerks. |

And that still wouldn't help. Lawyers are great at twisting the law to their own purposes. The DM should just not be a jerk and go with the intent of the wish and call it good (so long as everything wished for is within the power of the wish spell). |
| Magnus_the_Mad06-05-07, 02:48 PM | And that still wouldn't help. Lawyers are great at twisting the law to their own purposes. The DM should just not be a jerk and go with the intent of the wish and call it good (so long as everything wished for is within the power of the wish spell). I just wanted to clarify my earlier post. I don't twist Wish spells for my PCs if the wish is really reasonable for the level of play that they are at and it falls into the listed guidelines of the spell. However, you say that the DM should not be a jerk and should go with the intent of the wish spell and call it good? Well, when I read Wish more closely, it specifically states that Wish can be dangerous if you try to use it above the listed effects given in the PHB (which you have pointed out as well) Asking to have the spell casting and turning capabilities of a cleric of your level is going above and beyond the listed capabilities and could be game breaking if allowed without some sort of sacrifice on the players part. Seriously, who does not think that a Ninja10/ Fighter 20 with a thirtieth level clerics ability to turn and cast is not overpowered for a thirtieth level epic game? Great gods above! But, this example was probably not the best example of a DM being a jerk but there are others out there. I do agree with you though on the topic of asking for requests that Wish specifically states are acceptable. The DM should not be a jerk and twist these types of requests. After all, it is a 9th level spell and is meant to do great and powerful things! My advice for the player is to simply wish for the phylactery to be destroyed by someone other than you and your party (keeps the DM from being a jerk and teleporting you and your party to the lich to fight him). If that does not work, then I guess they'll just have to roll up their sleeves and go to work killing a lich.:) |
| Bob Loblaw06-05-07, 03:25 PM | What I meant was that too many DMs feel that it is their responsibility to twist the wish. I was in a 2nd edition game and teaching my wife at the time how to play. She ended up with a wish and wished for a bow +5. The DM gave her 6 bows. They weren't even weapons, they were tied up ribbons. While she shouldn't have metagamed, she also had been playing for all of about 2 months and was still in learning mode. This is the type of DM I was referring to. No amount of legalese is going to fix these DMs. They do their damnedest to twist things for their own amusement. If a 900+ page tax code can get twisted, I'm sure that there is no way we can come up with a way to prevent wishes from being twisted either. |
| zzakk2to206-05-07, 03:46 PM | wish for a holy sword that will help in a fight against powerfull undead. this will seem like a reasonable wish and while giving you something to fight the lich and company it will be usefull afterwards. it also has the advantage of alowing the DM to insert a dues-ex-machine to help later and because you dont know exactly what it does he can make it have a power awaken later to help you. dont try anything that would instakill the lich and company before you even fight them because most DM dont take lightly to you ruining their adventure they plotted out. another reason is that the lich is the DM's first character in that world so he might be a tad attached to it and want to keep it around for later use. |
| italycopp91106-05-07, 04:12 PM | Wish for the mortal deaths of the lich and vampires to be their final and "true" death. That way they cant come back as vamps and the lichs potion just killed him. If u think that the DM wouldnt want his fav PC to jsut be instakilled, wish for th lichs potion (or whatever made him a lich) not to work, leaving him mortal. Hes stil a bada** wizard, but theyre easy to kill with a little planning. |
| RobbyPants06-05-07, 04:20 PM | My character in our DM's 2nd edition homebrew world <snip> Currently his level is 20 Ninja/10 Fighter. You're multi-classed like that in 2nd edition? Is that something in the DM's homebrew world? |
| zzakk2to206-05-07, 04:23 PM | Wish for the mortal deaths of the lich and vampires to be their final and "true" death. That way they cant come back as vamps and the lichs potion just killed him. Hes stil a bada** wizard, but theyre easy to kill with a little planning. if it did not work the first time or it disapeared the lich would have tried again and plus you need to look at the fact that not only did it used to be the DM's character but it is a main character so easy no encouter kills will be countered so that the adventure can go on. after all how would like it if the lich wished that the moment that caused you to become a hero never happened? |
| nytemare370106-05-07, 04:45 PM | My favorite wish: I wish you wouldn't grant this wish. My favorite PRACTICAL wish: I wish I had the ability to change reality to suit my intentions. ^twist THAT! |
| zzakk2to206-05-07, 04:48 PM | you realize you are alseep when you make the wish and from now on everyone of you dreams are lucid dreams allowing you change them however you like. |
| Omnicronwarlord06-05-07, 05:41 PM | I wish that whenever I say the phrase "Blobby Kingy", the 20 words following that phrase, or all the words until the word "Blobby" is again uttered (whichever is a shorter amount of words) would become true as per not only the words literal meaning, but as I imagine their result in my mind. This ability can be used unlimited times, and has no repercussions I consider negative. hehehehehehe |
| zzakk2to206-05-07, 06:02 PM | you complete the wish then try it when you realize you no longer can pronounce the letter b |
| ATroubledMarco06-05-07, 10:35 PM | What can't be twisted can always fizzle. And for this specific instance, that's awfully divine power you're asking for. |
| cowzrul06-06-07, 01:18 AM | wish to be a 30th lvl bard? IIRC 2nd edition bards are totally overpowered. |
| Yokomohoyo06-06-07, 01:34 AM | You could wish that the lich was never born also... Since the Vampires are the Lich's daughters that should take care of two birds with one stone. |
| Drag0nUL06-06-07, 02:40 AM | For the twisting part: I think the Wish spell should be twisted from time to time(that's the fun in it compared to Miracle), but not in a very harmful way. For example, I don't see anything wrong if, when a PC asks for a Staff of the Magi he gets it together with a very angry previous owner; however if, when asking for a Staff of the Magi, the PC receives a non-magical wooden quarterstaff that had belonged to several mages before, that ceases to be funny and tends toward bad DM-ing. Nevertheless, I don't think the OP is referring to the wish spell in his post, but rather to a generic wish. |
| Ack06-06-07, 08:37 AM | Altering reality to whatever you want it to be - that is, having reality alter in accordance to your thoughts rather than your spoken words - would be an incredibly dangerous problem. How long can you control exactly what's going through your mind? And how long before you wish, even subconsciously, that you'd never made that wish? <Ping> World back to normal :P |
| Magnus_the_Mad06-06-07, 03:17 PM | I wish I had the ability to change reality to suit my intentions. ^twist THAT! Sure thing. Lets see if I can do this in a twisted fashion. As soon as you make your wish, you are transported to a abandoned city in the middle of a hot desert. No one is around except you. As you glance around, you notice an old rickety sign on the road leading into the city. It is covered by thick layers of dust but as you take a closer look you see something that shocks you. The sign reads "Welcome to Reality. Population 1." A voice in your head tells you "the city is yours to do with what you wish. You have the ability, but not the resources, to change it to suit your intentions. Should've been more precise with your wish." This is an example of a player asking for far too much. Is it too heavy handed for the DM to dish this out? Not in my opinion. I view wishes with extreme caution. If the player thinks they can pull a fast one on the DM and get amazing abilities for the price of one ninth level spell with no draw back then they are underestimating the DM and the danger level of the spell. I am aware that you are just supplying an example Nytemare, so please don't take this as me bashing your post. It seemed to me that you wanted someone to try and twist it so I gave it a crack ;) . Seriously though, I tell my players about consequences before they make their final decision about whatever wish they want. It's only fair. If I feel it is reasonable I will say so. If I feel it is really ridiculous I will let them know that the drawbacks will be severe. |
| zzakk2to206-06-07, 03:19 PM | yah dont just wish you beat them wish for a weapon thats good against powerfull undead and then use it to beat them. |
| CaoSlayer06-06-07, 03:34 PM | yah dont just wish you beat them wish for a weapon thats good against powerfull undead and then use it to beat them. Sigh. I was about to post about wishing for a sword +50. There is not trouble that cant be solved with enough large sword. |
| zzakk2to206-06-07, 03:37 PM | yes or ducktape also if silence is golden why is ducktape silver? |
| PwnageLlama06-06-07, 06:04 PM | Wish for an infinite amount of wishes. Alternatively, wish to no longer hate them. |
| Omnicronwarlord06-06-07, 08:52 PM | Altering reality to whatever you want it to be - that is, having reality alter in accordance to your thoughts rather than your spoken words - would be an incredibly dangerous problem. How long can you control exactly what's going through your mind? And how long before you wish, even subconsciously, that you'd never made that wish? <Ping> World back to normal :P 1. Wishes only happen between the Blobby King and the Blobby 2. It does what you say, but as your intention of what those words mean. Such as, if you wish you were in the country, and you thought of that as meaning as in the hills of bloba, you would go to the hills of bloba. It listens to your intentions, not random passing thoughts. you complete the wish then try it when you realize you no longer can pronounce the letter b that would fall under the sentence "no repercussions I consider negative" |
| zzakk2to206-07-07, 10:42 AM | that would fall under the sentence "no repercussions I consider negative" if you get a wish why shouldn't the god? also a god can see into future events and thus make it so that if you ever make that wish you stop being able to pronounce b. plus i am sure that falls under not making you a god. |
| Beware of Kobold06-07-07, 03:45 PM | i'd wish that i was playing 3.5 |
| Omnicronwarlord06-07-07, 06:00 PM | if you get a wish why shouldn't the god? also a good can see into future events and thus make it so that if you ever make that wish you stop being able to pronounce b. plus i am sure that falls under not making you a god. what are you saying? Goodness always wins? Why can I suddenloy not pronounce B? I would consider that negative. And I'm not making myself a god, I am giving myself 1 godlike power... |
| High Octane06-07-07, 07:35 PM | What is your DM like? Is your DM a bastard? If so, find a lawyer. You will need him. If he is a monty haul type of DM, you will be having FUN. If your DM however is like most DMs, don't get greedy. By that I mean don't ask for too much. World Peace may not sound greedy, but from the wish standpoint it is. |
| zzakk2to206-08-07, 09:29 AM | what are you saying? Goodness always wins? Why can I suddenloy not pronounce B? I would consider that negative. And I'm not making myself a god, I am giving myself 1 godlike power... yah only one godlike power... that can give your everyother godlike power in the book! |
| Omnicronwarlord06-08-07, 02:05 PM | yah only one godlike power... that can give your everyother godlike power in the book! I'm not saying this would worki with a regular wish, just that the god said he would do anything besides make him a diety. Providing the god sticks to that, he should give himself this amazing power, and then make himself a diety (if he wants to be a diety, that might anger the wish granting guy if he did, he should probably play it safe) Does this wish make you a diety? No. Hence it should be fine. |
| ATroubledMarco06-08-07, 10:30 PM | But any deity with the average deity's intelligence is going to see straight through that. Even a lawful neutral deity might take back his promise, citing that the PC is exploiting the nature of the agreement and breaking the spirit of the contract. Plus, this is the deity granting a <i>wish/miracle</i> for the character. The character is not necessarily being given full controls on wish-making - the deity might simply be asking for what the character wants, and then fills in the details and fluff with his own wording of the wish. So a carefully phrased wish might not do any good in this situation. If the GM is roleplaying the god well in this case, "I want a weapon to defeat the lich" might go farther than "I wish the lich and all his servants were dead forever," depending on what the god values as virtues (Kord might despise the second wish as avoiding a challenge, and could wish to "replace the lich and his daughters with something more worthy of the parties' time"). Chances are probably good that the latter is not the case, though. |
| zzakk2to206-09-07, 08:52 AM | dont make a wish that snipes the lich because for all you know they have other lichs and stuff to help them. wish for something that is good at defeating powerfull undead. this should work because most gods dont exactly like undead as a group. |
