| AdoGD09-05-05, 07:30 PM | What are the greatest strongest items in D&D I guess I'll start the list, hmm.... 1. THE WIZARDS ROBE (+4 INT, +2 Spells per day for each spell lvl, +3 to all saves, +5 to hide checks) - I had a crazy DM, but this is the best reward i ever got i think, I mean +2 spd for each spell lvl, very handy for a wizard. Ohh and BTW if there is already a topic like this can i get the link to it, I know of the 1001 minor magic items, but nothing major, or atifactual. |
| Callista09-05-05, 07:45 PM | 1001 greatest items? Hmm, that'd be like the top 50%... |
| ShadowDragon868509-05-05, 07:58 PM | I would like to nominate, in no particular order, 2. Heward's Handy Haversack. 3. Gloves of Object Reading. 4. Quaal's Feather Token: Swan Boat, in conjunction with anything that grants flight. 5. Bag of Holding (any type.) 6. Decanter of Endless Water. |
| Quarterstaff09-05-05, 08:12 PM | Belt of Perfect Execlence Monks belt Bead of Blasting Warlocks Scepter Rod of lordly might. |
| PhaedrusXY09-05-05, 08:18 PM | Celestial Armor (best armor in the core books for the price, hands down. Better than almost anything out of all the splat books.) Bag of Tricks (very good for the price, many uses) Nightstick (Libris Mortis, very good with Divine Metamagic) All the Fiendish symbionts in the Fiend Folio, and most of the grafts. Metamagic Rods (especially Quicken and Maximize) |

Bag of Tricks (very good for the price, many uses) Nightstick (Libris Mortis, very good with Divine Metamagic) All the Fiendish symbionts in the Fiend Folio, and most of the grafts. Metamagic Rods (especially Quicken and Maximize) I'm definitely going to have to agree with you on the Celestial Armor, and the Metamagic Rods. They invariably show up in most campaigns I play if they go high enough in level, because they are just that good. Not really familiar with the Nightstick of anything from the Fiend Folio. As for the Bag of Tricks, I'm sure it's great, but I've never used it before reading about it in OotS, and after that, no one was ever able to take it seriously. |
| PhaedrusXY09-05-05, 10:50 PM | Not really familiar with the Nightstick of anything from the Fiend Folio. As for the Bag of Tricks, I'm sure it's great, but I've never used it before reading about it in OotS, and after that, no one was ever able to take it seriously. The Nightstick gives you four more Turn (or Rebuke) Undead attempts per day for 10,000 gold. Probably the best ability of the stuff in the Fiend Folio is from the Gut Worm which gives you Rage at will with no fatigue afterwards, and a couple other benefits. Yeah, it was hilarious the way that the Bag of Tricks was treated in OotS... but it doesn't make it any less useful. :D They are relatively cheap, and so can be affored at even quite low levels, and they can act as trap detectors, flanking partners, or just as a tasty distraction to a monster that might want to eat you. Some of them are even decent combatants, if you get a lucky roll. And of course they offer great comic relief, hehe. *Ok, the rhino jumps down into the pit and lands on the ogre doing... alot of damage.* |
| Tummult09-06-05, 12:56 PM | Soap and/or marbles Soap up an area or lay down some marbles. The enemy has to make balance checks. If they fail, they fall and get the penalties of being prone. Even if the succeed, as long as they have fewer than 5 ranks in balance they are considered flat-footed. |
| LCD2YOU09-06-05, 02:45 PM | Grease, marbles and caltrops. Slip once and pull shards of iron out of your a** for weeks. A well balanced party with a rogue who knows the value of true team work. |
| DraconsNighthawk09-06-05, 02:52 PM | The +5 holy ghost touch undead bane mace that I created in a high level undead campagin. The DM shortly aftwards had it destroyed. =( |
| PoeticJustice09-06-05, 02:56 PM | The +5 holy ghost touch undead bane mace that I created in a high level undead campagin. The DM shortly aftwards had it destroyed. =( 'Why not just make it disrupting? |
| tharivol26609-06-05, 06:17 PM | thee all time best magic item in the game is a spellcaster. |
| AdoGD09-06-05, 09:52 PM | hmm another one: MAGICAL ROBE OF TORIL (DM made it): +2 to all ability scores, +1 to all skills, +2 to all saves, +2 enchantment bonus to AC, +2 to BAB, Increase speed by 20ft, +3 bonus spells to wizards only. |
| feartheinvinceblehamster09-06-05, 10:22 PM | gloves of storing hewards handy haversack bags of holding bag of tricks bead of force frost brand |
| Moon-Lancer09-07-05, 01:00 AM | star mental cloak from boed. Distroyes weapons on contact. If the weapon is magical you can make a reflex save for half damage. If your a monk or anything with evasion, Physical attacks cannot hurt you if you can make a save of 15. That shouldent be too hard when you can afford the cloak. all you need next is imunity to magic... |
| FreeTheSlaves09-07-05, 01:41 AM | 3.0 Absorbing shield for a mere 50K: sphere of annihilation touch attack every 2nd day (huge dragons with only natural armour anyone?)? Hell yeah! |
| McAbendroth09-07-05, 01:42 AM | I like the Portable Hole for carrying stuff. Makes for quick an easy storage for bodies to loot later when involved in a long combat. It's how I've been using it lately. Killed somebody but don't have to to loot no problem just push the body into the hole, move onto more killing and loot later when you have more time. |
| PhaedrusXY09-07-05, 05:02 AM | Here is one I had overlooked until recently: The Cube of Force. My god, that thing is insane for a spellcaster. |
| spectralphoenix09-07-05, 05:14 AM | I would have to say one of the most useful items is the minor cloak of displacement. It only costs 24K and you get a constant 20% miss chance. |
| MarkB09-07-05, 05:41 AM | For practically any spellcaster, and anyone who spends a lot of time in wilderness: Ring of Sustenance. For a cleric regularly facing undead: Phylactery of Undead Turning. +4 to effective level for only 11,000 gp? Bargain. |
| Callista09-07-05, 08:46 AM | I like the Portable Hole for carrying stuff. Makes for quick an easy storage for bodies to loot later when involved in a long combat. It's how I've been using it lately. Killed somebody but don't have to to loot no problem just push the body into the hole, move onto more killing and loot later when you have more time.Bloodthirsty much? I still like the Handy Haversack. It's great for UMD rogues who need to take stuff out of their packs as a free action during battle. It's saved my bacon umpteen times... And the Wand of Cure Light Wounds. Turns any weak first-level bard into a healing machine. :) Just be sure you can convince your teammates to pool their money for it. |
| Staver09-07-05, 11:17 AM | For DMG core I'll second the HHH and the Bead of Force. Have an archer character who had arrows specially crafted with BoF instead of tips, so target gets damage and then trapped (maybe). Very cool. For non-core, I'd like to vote for the Soulfire armor enchantment (BoED). No more negative energy problems for Mr. Fighter! And the Steadfast Boots from the A&EG, no more worry about trip attacks! I'd never play a fighter without these two again, not by choice. -Just my 2cp, Staver :D |
| Lyranis09-07-05, 02:57 PM | By far, the MOST useful item I have ever heard of is the Cloak of useful items. Especially if you have the version MY DM allows. Cloak of REUSABLE useful Items. THe cloak has patches on the inside, that, when ripped off and thrown on the ground become whatever the patch resembles (Ie a weapon). THIS particular cloak is then able to be tossed over that item and it turns the item back into a patch and mends the patch to itself... Need a campfire? Oh, here I've got one. Need some hay for your animals, Oh, look. Here... |
| feartheinvinceblehamster09-07-05, 06:49 PM | if you want money....get iron bands of billaro and start selling stuff like shadow mastiffs as novelties. |
| Argon_Asimov09-08-05, 01:02 AM | - A properly trained goat or other expendable animal. party rogue: "Gee, I'm not really sure if there are any incredibly dangerous traps in this hallway sure to brutally maim and kill us" party: "okay, send the goat first" You'll be amazed how easy those pit / rolling boulder / poison arrow / whirling death blade traps are to avoid. - A garrotte Not a conventional DnD weapon, but remarkably effective. You'd be surprised how difficult some NPC's find it to cast spells or draw a weapon when they're, you know, choking to death. |
| ShadowDragon868509-08-05, 03:14 AM | - A properly trained goat or other expendable animal. party rogue: "Gee, I'm not really sure if there are any incredibly dangerous traps in this hallway sure to brutally maim and kill us" party: "okay, send the goat first" You'll be amazed how easy those pit / rolling boulder / poison arrow / whirling death blade traps are to avoid. The downside, however, involves druids with large claws and larger teeth. |
| bomaz09-08-05, 07:02 AM | hm thought bottle. now the item creation feats are so much more valuable. |
| sparticus_eleisum09-08-05, 11:44 AM | - A properly trained goat or other expendable animal. party rogue: "Gee, I'm not really sure if there are any incredibly dangerous traps in this hallway sure to brutally maim and kill us" party: "okay, send the goat first" You'll be amazed how easy those pit / rolling boulder / poison arrow / whirling death blade traps are to avoid. I could not agree more... Also the goat can bait, orcs, goblinoids and lots of the least intelligen monsters... Also you can milk it and eat it if you are hungry enough A goat hands down:D |
| Ye' Cind09-08-05, 01:46 PM | These aren't necessarily the most powerfull, but they are my favorite: (In no particular order) 1- Queen Ehlissa's nightingale 2- Invulnerable coat of Arnd 3- Sphere of Annihilation ( that thing is scary. It's like a portable black hole!) 4- Teeth of Dahlver-Nar 5- Horn of Bubbles (LMAO) |
| spectralphoenix09-08-05, 03:56 PM | As long as we're talking about items that can't be purchased, I'd like to add the 2e Ring of Vampiric Regeneration. It healed your character by 1/2 the damage he dealt in melee combat. Combine with a rogue with two weapons, four attacks, flanking, and a good sneak attack, and he's invincible. |
| Ezell Pike09-08-05, 04:07 PM | Rope = tie stuff Adamantine Dagger = cut stuff Fire = combust stuff |
| bomaz09-09-05, 09:45 AM | I could not agree more... Also the goat can bait, orcs, goblinoids and lots of the least intelligen monsters... Also you can milk it and eat it if you are hungry enough A goat hands down:D this is a spell. mount |
| tharivol26609-09-05, 05:02 PM | this is a spell. mount mount cant make a goat. i win u lose. u r the weakest link goodbye. lol. who would want to eat a horse or pony? goats are scruptious |
| AdoGD09-09-05, 11:33 PM | hmm.... lets see Minor Image is the best spell hands down. think of the possiblities I mean its Minor and an Image you can't go wrong with dat. |
| Rhomphaia09-10-05, 04:41 AM | I am thoroughly surprised that no one has mentioned the Immovable Rod. With the Immovable Rod, the utilitarian aspects of the item are limited only by imagination. Other favorites of mine have already been mentioned (Iron Bands of Billaro, Robe of Useful Items, etc). These are all for serious games though. For ridiculousness, I just love the Aparatus of Kwalish. I mean, come on...it's an iron lobster you can ride in. I really want to know if anyone has ever gotten one of these as treasure. As a DM though, there are two items I love throwing at groups. The first is (of course) the infamous Deck of Many Things. The other is the Rod of Wonder (this is also a favorite of mine as a player too). In fact, one of the more memorable sessions I played in had to do with a Rod of Wonder. I will just leave it at the comical sight of an elven necromancer pointing a rod and yelling the activation word, 'chicken' at everything they came across. ...and yes, I was playing the necromancer... |
| R-man09-10-05, 09:35 AM | All of the carrying items are of incredable usefulness. However I really enjoy using some of the simple and cheap minor wonderous items that give small skill check bonuses. Something as simple as a +2 to your spot is frequently available for cheap early on in your characters career and can frequently make the difference between a live PC and rolling a new character up. I also really enjoy the various +2/+4/+6 con enhancing items, nothing quite beats having more HPs to help your character survive encounters. |
| Crystal Monk09-10-05, 11:33 AM | got these from a netbook somewhere, gave them to the wizard in my old game and he was forever thankful: Glasses of Read & Detect Magic. two 0-level spells, one simple item... concentrate for a round to activate either spell, so he's not constantly seeing magical auras unless he wants to. I think they also gave a +2 to Spellcraft checks when activated. very useful, and he was a big burly guy of a wizard (5'10" tall, CON 15) so he liked having something that made him look as smart as he was (INT 17). :D |
| PoisonBlade09-12-05, 03:48 AM | The Most Powerful Item in D&D is. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .*Drum Roll*. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Daern's Instant Fortress! While it's still a small metal cube, toss it into your enemy’s mouth and then speak the command word to activate it. SPLAT! :D |
| spectralphoenix09-12-05, 05:18 AM | Gross, but might be effective with Called Shot rules. |
| Solidcobra09-12-05, 06:02 AM | Amulet of sadism, BoVD. Very very very effective for frenzied berserkers (and, hey, with a +30 mod to that will save, you can break out of frenzy before you turn on your party too). Funny is that he gets +30 to skill checks too. o_O So, yes, that frenzied berserker can become a math genius of unparalelled wisdom for six sceonds by smashing at the ground with his sword. Sword of true strike: 'nuff said. doesn't work of course, but still. Wand of scorching ray, held by an artificer. :D Wilding clasp. What's that, you say? I can use my dragonscale fullplate/belt of strength/other cool, strong item even in wildshape form? I'll take it! I'll take twelve! |
| Pervy Hobbit Fancier09-12-05, 07:09 AM | The greatest item in the game? Easy. Potion of Cure Light Wounds Hand's up anyone who hasn't had their life saved by one of those little beauties... ...I thought not. |
| Artimaeis.iii09-12-05, 07:11 AM | 2 things... Solar's Bow Sword of the Solars |
| Zuckerart09-12-05, 09:05 AM | I could not agree more... Also the goat can bait, orcs, goblinoids and lots of the least intelligen monsters... Also you can milk it and eat it if you are hungry enough A goat hands down:D Reminds me of a game I played where the Polymorph Other (2e) spell was regularly used to create cows. While exploring a dungeon they were great for trapfinding, keeping the mindless undead occupied, and ofcourse good eating. (And they smell a lot less foul than goats.) The only problem was that the campaign kinda ended due to too much laughter :) |
| ticattack09-12-05, 10:59 AM | Ring of Sustenance. I can't believe only one person's said this. I have a level 6 sorcerer. Every night, he casts Rope Trick, climbs up the rope, naps for 2 hours, then comes down to annoy the rest of the part when they wake up. What's better, Endless Water, or not needing water? Prevention is better than a cure. Other than that, a wand of Magic Missile. Not a helluva lot of damage, but it doesn't miss. That's one thing it's got over a shortbow. |
