| mtrpcic02-25-07, 02:22 AM | I have never played a spellcaster before, and I want to now. I am starting a new campaign, but want to play an "unorthodox" spellcaster. I want to use my spells not just for battle, but for random stuff. Maybe make a bowl with stoneshape, fill it with water, and then make some soup? Who knows? Does anyone have any interesting ways of using spells, that are out of the ordinary? Also, which spellcaster would be best suited to play this kind of way? Any help would be great, thanks. |
| blackjackg02-25-07, 02:45 AM | My last character did this sort of thing, though for the life of me I can't think of any specific examples of creative spell use... I know I had some, though. I think the best choice for this would be a generalist (non-specialist) wizard. Simply put, they've got the best spell selection. You definitely don't want a spontaneous caster, as you won't want to waste your precious "spells known" slots on niche spells like the ones you're talking about. Obviously, the spells you want to focus on are ones with multiple uses. There's really only one way to cast a Magic Missile. But with a little creativity and a Grease spell, the sky's the limit. Wall of Ice is another fun one. Used together, they'll make walking up a flight of stairs a real treat... |
| Rillek_Denar02-25-07, 02:51 AM | I had the damnedest time with a bard once. The party encountered a Greater Abyssal Basilisk, and she created a Silent Image of a dragon to distract it. And do you know what? That beastie rolled a nat 1 on its will save, and believed the dragon! They were able to hide behind a large rock and pelt it with arrows and spells, while my prized monster battled a dragon that wasn't there... |
| draco111902-25-07, 03:11 AM | My favorite is this: cast Magic Missile at a downed foe to see if it's still alive (like a regenrating troll!). If the spell fizzles, the beastie's dead. |

Aye, I've used a web to catch a falling character before. However, it's more useful with pits than cliffs, because you need something on the other side to anchor it to. My character even used a web as an impromptu bridge once. I recalled another two creative spell uses for the same character: The first was using a Mirror Image spell to gain a bonus on my intimidate check (low int + seven or eight wizards charging in perfect unison = pretty scary). The second requires a little background: My character was a very stuck-up wizard who was being more than usually obnoxious to the dwarven captain of the guard in the city we were visiting. One day, he was cutting my group down to size (like the chief in all those bad cop movies) and standing on his desk so that he could talk down to us. When my character had enough of being chastised, he cast a reduce on the desk (in those days, it could affect objects too) and proceeded to turn the tables on the stumpy cop. |

House rule, but it was hilarious watching the guy trying to stop his full-plate from beating him up. 11. mirror image + ventroliquism to confuse the heck out of town gaurds 12. One time when we were spying on a meeting between the BBEG and his minion, my gnome character used ghost sound to make farting sounds from the BBEG whenever he opened his mouth to talk. The meeting didn't get far after that as the minion eventually started to laugh and didn't listen to his orders. Later on, the DM took me aside and told me that had stopped the BBEG's plan before it had even started. Who says magical whoopee cushions are no good? Yes, I do love illusions. |
| Ameture Expert02-25-07, 06:43 PM | 13) Cast "Disrupt Undead" to see if it is undead or not. Sure You can use "Detect Undead," but that's a First level spell and Disrupt Undead is a cantrip, you can save your first level spell for later. Plus it would seem a waste if your just trying to see if one creature is alive or undead. I thought up that one with my first character, a fighter who had just started taking levels in wizzard. "I drop my sheild and begin to cast a spell" became like a catch phrase. Well, the party was in a dwarven stroghold that was over taken by undead. In this instance I didn't even have "Detect Undead," let alone have it prepared, and we wanted to confirm if some dwarves slowly moving towards us were zombies or not (we had to be certain before hacking them to peices) Fighter/Wizzard: I know! I have this spell that disrupts undead, if I fire it at one and it phases him then he's undead. Ranger: Right, and what if they're alive and just malnurished or something? Fight/Wiz: (Hm, the PHB didn't say any thing about if used on living) Well, I don't think it has any effect on living. I don't see why it would since it just mucks up the necromantic forces animating a target. I think worst case senorio is a bad itch that wouldn't last to long. On a side note... Ranger:  Fight/Wiz: What? Ranger: That is without a doubt the longest I've ever heard you talk. |
