Greetings, friends.
As DMs, we always find ourselves plotting and planning for game sessions with the (usual) intent of brining some fun to our friends. However, the game must also be fun for us! How do we garner some of the enjoyment? From the unexpected turns our master plans take while the PCs run about trying to figure out what is going on, that's how!

What completely unexpected in-game instances have occured while you were running a game?

I look forward to the replies!:D

Take care, friends.

You've mistakenly posted this in the player's forum, but I'm sure we can come up with things from a players Point of View for you.

1. My joint biggest suprise was when the DM created an Anti-Magic field full of Daleks for us to battle.

2. Equally baffaling was the time we had to pass back through a riddle door, but it was locked and we had to utter the answer to the riddle again to unlock it.

The Spanish Inquisition!... :D

Seriously, we had a wizard become a Wild Mage and go crazy durring the Time of Troubles (high level 2e campaign). Somehow he managed to get his hands on a deck of many things that was in the form of an accordion. He thought he was a minstrel and went around trying to get people to request songs that set off the Deck. I can't believe it was so well played or that the GM let it happen. He lost the Deck come accordion only when the Time of Troubles was over, but he never actually abused what he had. It was pretty bizzarre to say the least.

When the DM starts you second guessing the right answers.

A mid level campaign (15), we were caught up between a Red Dragon and a tyranical king. We did not know he was evil, but I strongly suspected it. Well, I wanted to kill him, and use the septor we found to touch a mystical artifact. On both counts, we had evidence pointing both ways, but because the guys know i am a button-pusher and play a button-pusher, they stoped me on both accounts. Which is what the DM counted on, since doing either would have ended the campaign prematurely.

Our DM was always picky about lighting. If we acted like we could see (and nobody had darkvision) in places we couldn't, then he'd get really annoyed with us until someone declared they were lighting a torch. Things came a head one day...

DM: You are in a corridor, *gives long description involving tapestries hanging on the walls.* Suddenly, the door shuts, thus cutting off the only source of light. The corridor goes completely dark, and you can't see anything.

Player: I go examine the tapestry more closely.

DM: You cannot see the tapestry.

Player: Okay, then I walk to the end of the corridor.

DM: You walk until you bump into something solid.

Player: I examine it.

DM: *Sigh* You can't see it. It is dark. You are likely to be eaten by a Grue.

Player: Screw this, I'm going back to the tapestry.

DM: *Rolls dice* You have been eaten by a Grue. Everyone else, you hear loud chomping noises and your comrade's death screams.

We got the torches lit soon after.

In a game I ran awhile ago, a very unexpected plot twist occured.

Situation: Chaotic Evil Priestess of Lolth who quite literally has gone bananas and crazies with her Chaosness (more chaotic than evil by a longshot) is fighting the party with two Marilith bodyguards.

Did I mention, the Party is level 14-15, eberron, a little over-geared but not by too much. Paladin, Wizard, Spellthief, Scout party.

So, I was thinking, they kill all the bad-guys, or maybe just knock out the cleric, and take the cleric back to interrogate...or just kill her in combat by accident, wtv.

At some point, my cleric aimed a destruction spell at the spell-thief...he failed his absorb check, and rolled a 2 on his fort save...and died horribly.

Seeing the death the CG halfling wizard...to protect his party...or...the cleric from the LG paladin charge/smite that's about to come her way in revenge...or...maybe to end the fight...I wasn't sure at the time (turned out to be to protect his party from the cleric)

Walks up to the cleric on his round, casts defensively, casts planeshift, and attempts to take the cleric with him. Thus leaving the party behind in the Abyss no less, with no way to get back other than to go back to the portal gate opened by an NPC...which may have collapsed days ago...

Planeshifts...to the material plane...asks for a completely random place...not specifying...so I roll randomly with dessert, ocean, land, plains, mountains...well I roll ocean...and then I decided which one randomly...then I decided how far in it randomly...so the wizard ends up 500ft in the air, falling to his doom with this CE cleric in hand who decided on a whim to go with seeing as she was losing the fight anyway (mariliths dead)..... I had no idea how to re-start up anything...took me a few minutes to think up a few things actually....

The game actually stopped for awhile the moment the wizard (named Calien), said "I planeshift and try to take her with me...does it work?"

The party all exclaimed something along the lines of..."That bastard, now how are we gonna get back home...we just lost our way out..." Being comprised of a Paladin...and a scout...(no multiclassing...not even a haste item for mobility).

Try to puzzle that one out...crazy chaotic good halfling wizard/luckstealing/heir of siberys with mark of healing bastards!

We had a LE character in our group for the longest time. The group consisted of a CG ranger, a CG barbarian, the LE cleric, a CN hexblade, and a N spellthief. This made things very interesting for our group since the player is one of those guys who comes up with completely epic stuff and likes to get the best stuff even though he isn't the DM (he's a possesed suit of full plate with a tower shield and a bunch of other random stuff he shouldn't have, he also gave himself a wyvern mount by sacrifising 120 prisoners).
He also made several deals with the god of violence in our universe and tried to make it seem reasonable by saying that he was doing it for the good side and it would all even out.
Hehe...well it finally came around to haunt him.
It turned out that the god of violence didn't like that way of seeing things, or the fact that said character could end a war with all the powers he was getting. So the god of violence ends up possesing and killing random villagers (we ended up finding them impailed on pikes outside the castle we were staying at).
This leads us on a long chase trying to figure out who did it. When we finally figure out that he's been possesed he losses control of his body as the god of violence takes over and tries to kill us. This forces me (the ranger) to detroy him by sacrificing the most valuabe possesion that the group has, a holy avenger that we had found, dispelling the armor from the evil taint (this caused the avenger to disintigrate). This of course made my character and my friends very happy as we're CG and this char was just too powerful.
So now our cleric has to change to LG alignment and gets all new stuff.
That was a very fun night of roleplaying, especially since our DM had been wanting to get this player back for all his "creative licencing".

These are great, guys!
I do apologize for having posted this in the Players section, but lets just here some things from the Players' point of view.

Keep it up.

Take care, friends.

Way, way back in the days of 2e I was running a Ravenloft campaign with a bunch of newbies. At first level, I let them in on the fact that there was this dark looking castle surrounded by mist outside the village. The villagers all spoke of it with abject terror, and spoke of the "devil" inside.

My plan had been to set up the nature of Ravenloft from the beginning and give the players an idea of the feel of the place. I also thought it could set up a campaign long arc of being terrified of that castle, while thwarting plans that kept seeming to emanate from it.

Unfortunately, the players decided (newbies, remember?) that I was hinting they should go to the castle and kill the "devil" inside.

Of course, that devil happened to be Strahd von Zarovich. Worse yet, it was 2e high level Strahd, not 3.5e pretty-cool-i-guess Strahd. I decided that Strahd would let such easy prey through the fog... I sighed, and decided they needed a "welcome to DND, rookie" sort of hit. Strahd hunted them through the corridors, and picked them off one by one.

The next game they were a bit more... cautious.

A pie trap.
Man, it was hilarious. The look on their faces when I told them the failed theis reflex saves, and then when I discribed the type and texture of the pie that each one got.
