Just as the title says. Let's hear the strange, bizarre, and nonsensical habits your characters engage in. I'll start with one that I inflict on almost all of my characters.

1. Searching the body parts of slain creatures for things I might possibly find some use for later on. In the past, I've taken berries from an assassin vine, fur from a chimera, claws from an owlbear, poison glands from a monstrous spider, and plates of chitin from a monstrous centipede.

2. Whittling. Constant whittling.
3. Playing with the campfire instead of talking to the other party members. And this was an int18 wizard I was playing!
4. Convince others your name is "Deathbone von Testelust".
5. Use tree shape whenever possible, to be "more in touch" with nature.

- Collecting swords. And I mean swords of all types, cursed, beneficial, whatever. I had one fighter / rogue who carried 5+ swords in addition to having others in his hideout.
- Instant hatred of all pixies. A PC pixie stole a sword from the above rogue...

My fighter/primeval constantly picks on the halfling rogue in our group. He's set traps that catch the halfling by the feet and swing her around in the air, tied her to a tree and walked off for an hour while he went scouting, and my favourite was taking her weapons, getting the rest of the party to move away into the bushes to hide (hide checks were used :P), put out the fire, used his horn of fog around her while she was sleeping, changed into a wolf (primeval skill, pretty cool) and getting the druid's wolf and the druid in wild shape form and himself to scare the bajeezers out of her. 3 wolves and no weapons is scary in anyones books

A wizard/sorc who only casts/prepares fireball, and its metamagiced forms. If he doesnt cast fireball, then its delayed blast fireball.

Hmm... i guess that isnt too strange for the magicey types....

10. Playing a researcher type who tried to study the monsters as they were attacking - luckily he had some pretty good defensive magic, so he didn't get hurt too badly when he did stuff like measuring how far the fire from a dragon reached. Also, of course, he dissected the more interesting monsters after they were defeated, and used magical taxidermy to preserve them for later display in his study.

11. Roleplaying out that your thundering spear makes a noise when you use it as a walking stick.(boom, boom, boom, yea it got kind of annoying)

12. Won't stop playing your flute.(a druid, not a bard)

13. Having all your characters have an obsession with black (got so bad that he was begging for a black unicorn mount.)

14. Having all your characters have the same name (same player).

15. Obsession with gambling.
Lord Gwydion

16. Casting "create water" everywhere and anywhere, as a cleansing ritual and/or greeting. [A Druid character in the first 3E campaign I DMed]

17. Getting a special "upside down" crossbow made, to be use it while hanging upside down from the ceiling with "spider climb." [a Bard/Sorcerer in the same campaign]

18. Having a background of a "master chef on the run." [female, LE Dwarf Fighter in the above campaign]

19. Insisting he was an "alchemist" and nothing else. [Gnome Rogue in the above campaign]

20. Constantly telling people, "I worship Apollo." [Elven cleric in the above campaign]

21. Just existing. [Half-Orc Barbarian/Necromancer in the above campaign]

22. The headstick.
With my very first character, one day, he bought a longspear. Every time he killed something really tough, he'd chop off the head and stick it on the longspear. By the time I was done with that character (only a few small adeventures, just something of a warm-up for a new player) he happened to have a hobgoblin leader's head, and ogre's, and a hell hound's.

Worse was the fact that he was a monk. And a pyro.

23) I had an insane wild mage (is there any other kind?) who kept talking to himself. He even had the eye twitch.:twitch:
He would set up big plans to do one thing and then do something else. Like to get down a pit, he tied a rope to a stup, pulled it to make sure it was good and tight, leaned over the edge, and jumped while casting feather fall.
Fanged Fremont

24.) I had a character who was obsessed with fried chicken. Everywhere they went he wanted to know if they had any chicken.

DM: So you walk into the tavern, you see,
Me: I Demand Chicken!

DM: You come by an alchemist shop and blacksmith, you see a large man hammering away on,
Me: Do you have any chicken? (Alchemist have gotta have good chicken what with all the herbs and spiced)

DM/Guard: It apparent that you are insane. You will be kept in a cell until your party leaves.
Me: Do you guys have chicken?
DM/Guard: Yes
Me: All right!
DM/Guard: But you won't be getting any.
Me: *sad face*

25.) A half giant alcoholic. Whenever we find beakers of stuff he jams the contents of one down someone's throat. "Is it firewater?" "No but it BURNS!"

26.) Hums the chocobo song. Then sings it. "Doot doo doot doo doot doo doot doo. doo dum da doo di doo da doo da dum"

27.) Dramatically shoves his sword up to peoples faces when trying to make a point. Has had armed broken several times.

28.) Keeps pet monkeys despite them being totally insane. Insists they are only hungry. Can anyone say monkey pick pockets?
Andrewinator

09-29-05, 10:27 AM
29) Beheads defeated enemies, stakes them on a stick with an "R" carved into it (for "Roondar"), and casts arcane mark on the head's forhead.

Hahaha. I remember your DM telling us about this in another silly 1001 thread.

I had a character (read: pirate bard with a spiked chain) who introduced himself to absolutely everyone the group met. He did so in the exact same way, every time. He would stop, flash the DM a great big smile, and orate the following lines, in my best (which wasn't very good) Troy McClure voice:

"Hi. I'm Wilden Ordell! My friends call me Wil. You can call me Wilden Ordell!"

After the tenth time, the other players in the group would begin interrupting me at "Hi." and just yell out "HIS NAME IS WIL!"
Necro King

09-29-05, 01:53 PM
31. There was a thief in our party that could only keep the items pickpocketed for 24 hrs. Everytime he met someone new he would give them the stuff he took from the previous person, and then when he was finishing the conversation he would pickpocket that person
feng the red dragon

09-29-05, 02:22 PM
32. In my current campain my elf fighter has a tendency to pull a vial of alchemists fire out of my pouch and throw it at the goblin wizard, half orc barbarian/forsaker, human rogue, or dwarf cleric. Just to get a kick out of it.
Order 66(6)

I once played a dwarf that sustained serious brain damage and thus suffered some serious behavioral and psychological problems. He wasn't dangerous, but he became VERY eccentric and quite entertaining to play. Here are some of his quirks that I will add to the list:

33: An obsession with sporks, to the point where he had a weapon crafted that was essentially a giant spork.

34: Thought he was a super hero, even though his insanity made him chaotic neutral

35. Worshipped a chicken he called "the chicken of prophecy." Revered it as an all knowing acolyte from the God's with the ability to predict the future.

36. Carted around aforementioned chicken in a small wagon so it wouldn't have to suffer the indignity of walking.

37. Is a nudist, and would randomly disrobe during party downtime.
Radijs

09-29-05, 09:43 PM
38: Thought follows form. A druid who when wild shaped takes on a lot of the animals habits and instincts.

A woman fell into shark infested waters and my druid was there wildshaped as a shark. There where dozens of other sharks so the woman was dead in an instant.
Shame to let it go to waste my druid joins in in the frenzy.

39: You mean we where in danger? Same druid didn't realize that everybody on the boat would have died if it had shaken itself apart on the sand bank.

"What do you mean? We could have just swum for the shore. Its not like its that far away."

"Erutan.... not everyone can turn into a shark like you....."

40. My party's half-elf paladin has an irrational fear of sleeping outdoors. "Dirty and unkempt" is a phrase often repeated about the forest. The sleaziest tavern, bedbugs and all, is better for her than a night under the stars.
tarrasquelord

09-30-05, 07:23 AM
41: My current halfling barbarian (lvl 2) will always try to climb to a high place just before combat starts. After inititive is rolled and his turn comes up, check to see if anyone is close then leaps from the tree screaming "Asham's Flying Halfling Attack!" while swinging his small handaxe.

09-30-05, 11:06 AM
My favorite quirk that one of my character's had was talking about himself in third person:

Boaz: Boaz would like your finest ale.
Random Barmaid: And what would you like..hey, you are sitting alone.

Memeber of the Party: And so I think that is a plan, any thoughts, anyone?
Boaz: Boaz thinks your plan will not work and Boaz will die a horrible death. Boaz thinks we should use the plan Boaz came up with. Boaz likes it much better.

etc, etc, etc.

Of course it helped that he was a stuck up Paladin type. It is a lot more challenging than you think to speak in 3rd person all the time.

Being called Hu Yu, and speaking in the third person using only the surname.

"I'm Derrick. What is your name?"

"Hu Yu"

"Not me, you!"

"Your name is Yu too?"

"No, my name is Derrick, not Yu'tu. At least tell me your first name."

"Hu"

"You!"

"No, first name is 'Hu'"

"Whatever, I'm not playing your guessing game."

"You will not insult Yu! Yu will kill You!"

A fighter obsessed with his family tree, writes letters home whenever possible and informs everyone of how great his ancestors were/are.
Salla

09-30-05, 07:33 PM
My present character has a positive predeliction to alliteration, preferring sequential similar sounds when speaking. He's also acquired the catchphrase, "You underestimate me," which appears to activate a computer chip in my d20 that makes it come up with at least a 17 every time (not really).
Parrex

10-28-05, 12:21 PM
46. My current character tries to look cool to the exception of all reason.

If there is a perfectly good stairwell leading down to ground floor, my character leaps out the window, tumbling to a stand in a cascade of shimmering glass,

If caught in a fight in the alley, my character feints, tumbles, sidesteps, and retreats in full defense mode, until they have a sizeable group of onlookers,

I made a character who has a huge affinity to the elemental plane of fire (pyrokineticist levels). He tries to solve things with fire unless there is no way fire can do it. He would burn things- just for fun. An assassin in his tavern room? He could just blast him. But just for kicks, he would jump out of the building (has landing armor) and torch the whole place :mage:

reminds me of a half fire elemental,
hmmm a door : let's burn it
hmmm a pile of corpses with a friend under: burn it (after casting fire protect on friend)
hmmm a enemy: burn him
hmmm a house of no signifitance: burn it
random forest: burn it

48 (?) Had a guy in my dungeon who ran a dwarf with 7 intelligence :( Insisted on buying a goat, having it specially trained as a "war goat", paid for specially fitted armor for it, then rode the dang thing into battle. Whenever we had an encounter (*any* encounter) he would constantly bombard me with "And what is the goat doing?" every single round! It got old *very* fast, and I finally got the player to admit he was doing this whole routine solely to "get my goat" (His pun! Not mine! :pbbbtt: ) The goat died a very messy death shortly thereafter ...

55. I just made a character for an online game with an addiction to cinnamon, but haven't played him yet. He constantly carries a pound of cinnamon spice at his belt. He takes cinnamon as a drug, snorting it up his nose, sprinkling it into his food, putting it into his drink, etc. If anyone has any other uses for cinnamon though, I'd love to hear them and further develop my character.

I had a Duergar fighter who'd spent his entire life underground before coming to surface. And wanted to fly. Everytime we had to travel somewhere, he suggested that we fly there. Eventually he got to ride on a griffon, and loved it.

I also tried to make use of the racial invisibility spell and Move Silently bonuses by putting cross-class ranks in Move Silently and getting Armour Optimization. He continually claimed that he could move quietly - in full plate. The monk, ranger and rogue doubted his claims.

Stabbing every monster we kill, even it is clearly very dead (disintergrated). Repeatedly. For several minutes. With a flaming dagger. This stems from bad experiences with trolls.

One of my friend's characters randomly asks the DM "Am I being Scryed?"

It's always out of nowhere, like"

DM: There is a large stone door in front of you.

PC: I search the lock for traps... disable the traps... am I being scryed?... pick the lock...

Another character in one of my parties was a fighter who would never carry a weapon, just disarm the opponant and kill them with their own weapon, and leave it in them. Anyone tracking us got huge moral penalties because they had reciently found their comrades nailed to the wall by their own blades through all maner of vital body parts.

I had a Changeling Spymaster whose alternate identity was the detective on his case. It was beautiful. Every time I would just BARELY get away, while I used my criminal connections to get locations on other criminals so that I could bust them as the detective, thereby maintaining her reputation as one of the best detectives in Sharn and assuring that she would remain alone on my case. Just beautiful.

I'm about to play a Warlock who is CG, unless he gets angry. Then he caves to the darkness in his soul and is capable of all types of horrible evil. We'll see how it works out.

In the game I'm currently running there is a Gnome Sorcerer who just HAS to know everything about everyone. He asks very politely and all that, and it never really came up until another character, an elvish Eldritch Knight with personality problems, deemed that the gnome was 'too curious for his own good' and refused to tell him his name or anything about him. They've been fighting on and off about it since. ;)

I had a cleric that hated things that were unclean...This ment lots of things. His hirelings were all to wash, regularly. All riding animals had to be miticulously washed. When we were carried on a ship it would require a extensive cleaning and inspection before he got on. Most importantly he never ate meat, animal flesh was unsanitary. If a party member needed healing they would be required to swear off meat too for a certain amount of time. Or he threatened to take the healing back. (never did)

He was lawful neutral and did some pretty wicked things things in his time, but when the campaign was done one player made the comment.

"He has done some pretty evil things, but I think the evilest is trying to make the world vegatarian."

Fo Living Greyhawk, I am planning on building a Wood Elf Rgr2/Druid* based on Steve Irwin the Crocodile Hunter.

"Crickey! This one is an aboloot byoody! Just look at the colouration on this little fella!"

I got the idea playing "here be dragons", tossing in a comment "Remember! It's crucial to get that top jaw rope secured!" outside the final area. It wasn't really in game for the characer I was playing (H/Orc Bbn1 who is going to be a tank/cleric of Kord), so I have decided to do it for the other character I built.

I thought of it first.

One of my friends played an Epic Samurai with that feat that puts no limit of Iaijitsu Focus damage. 40d6(ish) extra damage, EVERY ROUND! Just kept sheathing and unsheating the sword. Players were falling asleep fast after that.

I had a bard that couldn't stand the wizard stopping every 10 feet to check for traps for 5 minutes before continuing, so he just walked passed. He was hit with 3 fireballs and a disintegrate and didn't die, he was tied up later.

I have a character in the group I'm DM'ing, he's a druid and will only talk to the other druid in the party. He is the most random character on the planet, and both of the druids refuse to sleep inside.

1. carries around approx. 500 chips of cookies in any given time. take one out from seemingly nowhere and eats it whenever the character is bored/ not interested/ waiting/ any random situation. the DM allows it since the cookies don't actually effect the stats :D
other players joke about the character (a small figured bard) having a Magic Bag of Holding Cookies.

2. a cleric (female, cute, sort of, if a bit dense/slow) who absolutely love snails. she doesn't pet them or anything, just watching-- following the snail's movement with a blank-happy face. the party had to drag her from roads where there are snails, or they'd be really late. ;)

I have a psionic character who likes to hold conversations with inanimate objects. Anything that happens to be nearby will work, chairs, walls, cracks in walls, pebbles inside cracks in walls, you get the idea. Once while imprisoned one of the other characters made an offhand scathing comment and she used attraction on him to the crack-in-wall she was talking to at the moment.

Nothing quite as amusing as watching a normally well-balanced mul (from dark sun) barbarian and a skinny human girl having a 3-way conversation with a cracked wall.

I had a character who after he killed the enemy gouged out all their eyes. Same character that was deathly afraid of holly bushes.

I played a thief who liked to "rearrange" the equipment in the party when i was taking my watch, I'd take things from the fighter and give them to the cleric, espesially his holy symbol, and so forth, the wizard got so ****** everyday looking for her (and I do mean her, gasp!) spellbook that she warded it and next time I touched I found myself in the center of a maximized fireball. I having the luck of the Irish on my side rolled a 1 on my reflex and was promptly turned into a cinder along with the rest of the party :) .

I had a LN cleric of Wee Jas once... he was kind of goth/emo now that I think about it.

Anyways, he had some mental problem (homicidal tendencies) near the end of his career. One way he would calm himself in stressful situations would be to channel an Inflict Minor Wounds spell. Just cast it, and hold the charge, channeling negative energy. When he was done, he would zap himself with it.

Eventually he got touched by Thariz'dun (some hyper-evil god of entropy) and went insane (more). He ended his adventuring career by becoming a lich and killing his party when they least suspected it (you should have seen the looks on their faces), as they were all CG and completely oblivious to my change.

I had a halfling that would comb his feet hair whenever he had time.

I played a lazy wizard who was obese. He created eyes of clairvoyance which he used to read his spellbooks which he left at home because they were too heavy. He also would levitate and tie himself to a horse to be towed so that he wouldn't have to walk.

I also played a conjurer who's Charisma was 6. He became a conjurer so he could sommon friends and companions whenever he wanted or needed them. His familiar was an earth elemental that was in the shape of a stool. He would ride around on his familiar and use his wands on summon monster to accomplish everything he needed. He tried quite often to tell the party what to do, forgetting that he didn't have any control over their actions. The biggest problem with this character was that his combat rounds could take 30+ minutes as I had to deal with every creature that he summoned.

My current character likes to play chess in her head (Int 20) while doing boring tasks like talking to the other party members or slaying something with twice her CR.

Her companion is a Daemonic Sword who has to dominate people to carry it around - and it likes to make its host cut himself with itself. It's like a nervous habit - whenever there's nothing interesting to do, it cuts up the host...

A character afflicted with OCD (obsessive cumpulsive disorder). They must always perform a specific ritual or always do something in a certain way. For example: when drawing a sword, the character must intone "May he who sheds blood with me today, be my brother" 3 times,( OTHER PLAYERS :waits: :waits: :waits: ) and after he finishes, screams "COME DANCE WITH ME MY BROTHERS!!!!"

CG warlock with invis and ddoor who would spend time everyday rearranging everything whenever on a ship or in town just for fun.

Dragon/barbarian who would never let anyone open a door....he would use his adamantine large greataxe to smash it down in one shot. Those poor doors never had a chance :(

Hah... do you know how much fun that is in real-life? Just be standing around in the middle of a conversation and pull a cookie out of your pocket and start eating it. I got a reputation just for doing that twice.

Anyway, my next character is going to be a hyperkinetic dervish with around 16 dex, 14 int, 10 wis, 8 charisma (or 6 if i can)... and she will not be able to shut up. I plan to ramble for about a minute whenever anyone asks me a yes/no question. And if anyone yells at me to shut up, I just will not take the hint. I should get some huge roleplaying award once someone tries to strangle me ooc.

I'm currently playing a rogue that collects anything and everything and puts it into one of his 4 bags of holding.

I had a friend once that played alcoholic gnomes. . . that liked to get drunk and sing raunchy bar songs. It's sort of funny, the singing always seemed to summon the nearest hostile group of monsters.

A cousin of the previously aforementioned player always played halfling rogues that would begin combat by hiding in shadows and moving silently. Battles would often end as he got in posistion to backstab. He landed precisely zero of 30 attempted backstabs.

In my most recent group, an aasimar sorceror likes to construct and fly kites during down time. Oddly enough, his character has died at least five times in as many sessions. Perhaps he should spend more time in town buying some defensive items.

I Have a fighter who with the party rogue refers to everything IC and OOC as a Plan with a capital letter. There's Plan A which is: Listen behind a door, Check it for traps, Then kick it in. There's also the variant Plan B: listen behind a door, check it for traps, then cautiously open the door. Before entering a dungeon one of us will say "Plan A is in effect" and the other will nod. Plan A is in effect more often than any other plan.

Also same campaign we have a jug of wine we found in the first dungeon. Everytime we return to the surface alive we each take a swig from it.

Ramata klan, my abysal human fighter, had the very bad habit of cutting off the fingers of his defeated foes and pickeling them in a jar he kept specifically for this purpose. He would very often walk around gnawing on last weeks opponent. the ironic thing was that once he took the nails and skin off if anyone asked what was in the jar he just told them it was sausage. and no one ever questioned him.
Same character also had a specially crafted bag of holding that functioned like a half sized portable hole. He bought several hundred healing potions, upended all of the bottles into the bag and then would stick his head in the bag for a healing gravity bong hit. Eventually convinced that he was wasting good healing juice on the stuff that made his hair wet, he was convinced to get a specially crafted crazy straw and a helm with a holder (beer hat)

I had a paladin that insisted he was immune to fire damage, and would do things like jump in front of a fireball spell to trigger it on himself, jump in front of scorching rays to take the hits for the party, run into burning buildings to save people without taking any precautions, and charage red dragons head on without a care for the breath weapon.... ironically he ended up drowning.

I had a second edition gnome that rolled minimum size, cast reduce and alter self to make him appear constaintly 6 inches tall, wore all green and then would ride around town on a tensers floating disk with a table cloth over top of it while making the flying saucer noise.

and one of my favorite characters of all time.... i played a elan psion who didn't know he was elan (it was done to him against his will) who was convinced he was a wizard... and then took levels in the thrall herd class and didn't know he was a thrall herd... his favorite line was "who ARE all these people?"

one other one i thought of, was i am currently playing a character thats a favored soul 1 / human 3. He has 26 con (+2 human, +6 magic, 18 base) endurance, die hard and great fortitude. He drinks pure grain alchohal by the bucketload while wearing his mithral battlemountain plate.... did i mention he has 4 wisdom and 6 int? If anyone asks him his name he says his name is fighter. covered his armor in fire engine red paint, and put a target bullseye on his sheild. and is dumb as a box of rocks, but innocent.

he is the only character that has ever in my history of gaming managed to get free booze from dwarves... on the condition that he take it to GO!. He is great fun to play, and has absolutly no fear. He isn't aware that he can cast spells or that he might actually die. He is the classic level puller character, and button pusher. He taunts enemies in combat by giving them well meaning advice on how to fight him more effectivly, thinks the party stabbing him is their way of saying they love him, and can't understand why sword-chucks are a bad idea.

I play a female gnome druid in an eberron campaign. Whenever she says "Oh how cute, a *insert name of animal here*" A predator would swoop down from the sky (usually a dragon or griffon) and eat it. Whenever the other gnome in the group, a rouge/illusionist, annoyed her, she would say that, he runs and ducks. :D

this one is for a character I will soon be DMing for:

A Dwarf Gestalt Fighter/Cleric who buries all his treasure(gold, gem, silver, all of it) every night.

I had a fighter before that had a fear of mimics... It was very amusing because if there are any objects in the same room as him, he would edge away from them and keep a hand near his weapons. When we were in an almost empty tavern, he grew very suspicious of the table and chairs behind him and the barbarian in the party smashed the table. The DM had the table reassemble itself and sent my fighter running.
