| Tiran11-30-05, 02:03 AM | Use any tactic, idea or trick you've ever come up with (whether you tried it or not) to stage an escape or bust some party members out. It doesn't have to be the whole plan (although it can be). It could be at any point. Getting into the prison on a bust, getting out of the cell, any trick against a guard, etc. 1. Sleep on the guards 2. Using the ball and chains that some prisons lock you up with as an improvised weapon if you can lift it. My dwarven battlerager (really a fighter who eventually took barbarian levels) did this once. Guard failed a fort save and went down hard. |
| Rolof11-30-05, 03:51 AM | As a DM, I once had the druid of the party in the brig of a ship they were on. He tried to escape multiple times, here is what I can remember him doing: 1)Used a splinter to poke his skin in dozens of places, then claimed he was sick and demanded medical attention. (The splinter left little red spots.) I forget what happened next, it may be related to the next one. 2)Ate only part of the food the sailors brought to him, and hoarded the rest. I warned him it would go bad, to which he just smiled and said ok. After a couple weeks of this in game time, he then told me he was going to eat the spoiled food. I told him he'd have to make a con check to not get sick from it, to which he just smiled and said ok again. He failed the con check, and puked-telling me he made sure to puke near where the door opened. He then yelled for the guard, saying he was sick. (This may have been tied to his ruse in #1, I don't remember anymore.) The guard enters the cell to look at him, at which point he asks me can the puddle of puke force the guard to make a dex check. I just groan, and say yeah I guess...guard fails dex check, falls to the deck, he jumped him and escaped-temporarily. He was on a ship after all, not far to run. 3)Used the firebuilding proficiency (at a penalty because he had no flint and steel) to start a fire in his cell, then yelled FIRE!! Sailors come running to put out the fire, repeat the scenario in #2. |
| lord_blackfang11-30-05, 04:05 AM | What kind of prison are we talking about here? Without magical barriers, a caster or manifester just needs a good night's sleep and then teleport/dimension door/dominate/sonic missile his way out. |
| Callista11-30-05, 09:27 AM | Well, some casters need spellbooks, unless they have the proper feat... |
| JakeQuistis11-30-05, 01:24 PM | To me, the druid was a complete idiot if he didn't use his wildshape ability or his spells, unless this ship had a anti-magic field around it or in the prison. He could just turn into a beast strong enough or heavy enough to break through the bars or fall through the boat, then wildshape into an aquatic animal. With spells, there are probably many things he could do, including summoning some animals. With a spellcaster it's generally hard to keep them captive unless you have an anti-magic field. |
| lord_blackfang11-30-05, 03:08 PM | To me, the druid was a complete idiot if he didn't use his wildshape ability or his spells, And also for eating spoilt food just so he could vomit. Or did they chop all his fingers off? |
| Callista11-30-05, 03:27 PM | If he was a low-level druid, maybe neither or those would have helped him. And taking away his divine focus would have hampered him greatly in casting, anyway. |
| Always-Late11-30-05, 07:40 PM | Air elemental! Shapechange! Fabricate! Teleport! Disintegrate! Plane Shift! Sympathetic Vibration! +40 strength check! +40 escape artist check! Mass Suggestion! Gate! Earthquake! Shadow Walk! Repel Wood! Repel Metal! Repel Stone! We're kinda assuming you can't do these things. Well, DUH, if you could, you'd have done it already. And the druid would be a complete idiot. Seeing, as, though, he didn't, which would be everyone's first sane thought, he probably doesn't have spells to cast. |
| Rabid Dire Wolverine11-30-05, 09:49 PM | 5. Be a Monk. Beat up whoever gives you food, and when no one's looking, beat away at the walls. Then again, as they're lawful, they probably won't get in the big house. 6. For rogue, pick a lock. 7. If you're fed bread, keep it until it's dry and stale. Then set 'em on fire, and huck 'em. |
| OctoberRaven11-30-05, 10:00 PM | Or if it's dwarven bread, use that to knock out the gaurd. Thank you, Mr. Pratchett. |
| Fat Man11-30-05, 10:03 PM | 8 (only doable as a redculously high lvl mage) if you can ask to see the head gaurd as you wish to trade freedom for info as he steps up to the door tell him not to unlock it you are a dangerous mage remember while he thinks wink at him then cast a Maximised, Esured components, stilled, silenced fireball then grab the keys and run like yer tails on fire 9 go a gnome find a DM that allows gnomeish technology (explosives, guns, the machine that goes "PING" etc) kill everone before they even capture you |
| Callista11-30-05, 10:08 PM | 10. Halfling in a human jail? Ask for soap, or maybe butter for your bread, if it's a nice sort of jail. Anything slippery. Then use it to aid in your Escape Artist check to slip right through the bars! (Might have to remove clothes first.) Cookie to anyone who gets the reference :) 11. Got a familiar? Can it carry keys? Good--that's your ticket out. 12. Charisma 18 Sorcerer? Don't just stand there--seduce somebody!! |
| stranger_65412-01-05, 01:21 AM | 13. Bribing tends to work 14. Got people on the outside? send them to find you sonme gun powder, >_> 15. and a match 16. and dye for some colour 17. INSTANT FIREWORKS !!!! |
| Tibs12-01-05, 07:27 PM | Please excuse the length. Me and my friend were playing in a game my brother was running, just a scratch session we put together for fun. He and I both played gnomes: he, an illusionist, and I, a bard; we were partners (officials for the Royal Gnomish Travel Society-we rated taverns, measured ale-to-foam ratios, that sort of thing) who had drifted into town looking for loot (we tended to fund our research with other people's money...), and got into trouble with the local city watch (I had ****** off the party's ranger, picked the pocket of a thief, and ended up being shot at; I was actually jailed for associating with an elf lady (who was, in fact, my buddy in disguise)). Long story short, the DM was doing everything in his power to mess with me. The guards were the worst sort of Gnome-haters out there, and they made sure my character knew it. No ordinary cell for him, he was held in a cage, dangling above a fifty foot pit at the bottom of the local dungeon; a long, spiraling stair case was the only way out, and at the top was a heavy wooden door, locked. The cage was hanging so that it could be pulled to the stairs with a hook on a long pole; about fifty feet above it, there was a small airshaft that led outside (groundlevel; the shaft was less than a foot in diameter). So, there I am, hanging there, my ranger friend at the bottom of the pit below me (he'd shot at me earlier, and then attacked a guard who'd tried to calm him down). Being low level (I think I was only first, but I might have been as high as five...I can't remember anymore), my repetoire of spells wasn't that impressive; my illusionist friend had two knock spells and a whisper left from an earlier encounter, and that was it. He had already tried to get me out legally (with only a few small lies along the way), and had failed (in fact, had it not been for a goof up on the part of the DM, he'd have been framed and locked up as well...thank goodness we, as Gnomes, used many long, complicated, and fake names that the Dm couldn't remember) Here's what we did: using the whisper spell, my friend and I talked to each other through the air shaft to figure out a plan. We decided to save the knock spells for a last ditch attempt; one to get past the front door, and another to get into my cell. I had to get myself out of the cage, in any case. At this point, I had two mage hands, a dancing lights, and a ghost sound or two, and no equipment other than the clothes on my back. The next step was to pull a classic "fake out" on the guards; using that day's lunch (gruel...yum yum), I feigned sick to draw in a guard, and while I was busy "puking" on him, I picked his pocket. The upside was I didn't get caught, and I managed to lift a key off of him. The bad news, though, was that it wasn't the right key. So, that plan having failed, I had my friend send a crossbow bolt through the airshaft, which I caught with a mage hand (on the second, and last, try of the day). Taking a hefty penalty for using improvised tools, I managed to pick the lock of my cage; then, I climbed on top of it, and began to swing. When it got as close to the stairs as I could get it, I made a leap for it, and landed solidly on the steps. I crept my way up the stairs, and looked through a slot in the door at the top. There was one guard that I could see, and the door was locked. I decide the only thing that's gonna help me is a distraction. So, I use ghost sound to make that loudest possible ruckus I can, voices screaming bloody murder, right outside the airshaft where my unsuspecting friend was waiting. I even threw in a dancing lights, just for good measure. Guard runs off; working fast with the crossbow bolt, and taking even more penalties, I undo the lock, and slip out. On my way out, I stumble across the evidence locker, and using the key I lifted earlier, I get my stuff back...with a couple gold and silver pieces and a small barrel of rum for my troubles. So, I make it out, meet up with my friend at an inn a little while later, drink the rum, and skip town the next morning. Good times. |
| Rolof12-01-05, 09:21 PM | @Callista: The soap and bars thing, is that a reference to a Stephen King novel called Desperation? I just read it a few months ago, and there was a young boy named David that used that trick. Just for the record, since so many people have commented about the druid; he was only first or second level, and I'd probably had the guards search him and take any pouches that could have had spell components. The player was one of the most resourceful (read, sometimes annoyingly so to me, the DM) guys at the table, so if he didn't do "normal" stuff to escape, it's because I prevented him from it. He is now our DM. |
| Koryo12-02-05, 04:34 AM | In a campaign I was DMing, a lawful good monk PC was framed for killing some guards and merchants, and ended up in jail. A less than lawful spellcasting PC found out about it and came to help. She came to the outside of his iron bar filled window. She gave him some oil to rub on himself (after getting naked), and magically shrunk him. He was thus able to squeeze between the bars. |
| homey18812-02-05, 04:09 PM | stone to flesh on the walls, fireball.Escaping and getting a good meal out of it at the same time |
| Subitus Nex12-03-05, 09:01 PM | not on any of my games, but on a friend of mine's not so good campaign, they fled this "high security" prison by killing the rogue, cuting him into tiny bits, tossing said bits through the little door where the food came in and casting resurection on them. sneaky rogue then went to get the keys. |
| Aldarionn12-03-05, 09:38 PM | I've got a few I can think of to try for higher level parties. 1) High level evil mage, Mind Rape the guards and make them think that you are the prison warden. 2) High level evil mage with a Mother Cyst (Libris Mortis), emplant necrotic cysts in all the guards secretly and then cast nasty spells on them that make them explode and consume their souls. 3) This one we actually did in a low level party. The party was me (a Monk), a fighter, a Sorcerer, a Cleric and a Rogue. from what I remember, we were hired to tail a guy who had stolen a box that our employer wanted back, and recover it if possible. We came across some information that the box contained some evil item (turned out to be false information that our employer planted. He wanted to lure us to a friend of his, the "thief", to be captured. There was nothing in the box.). We were then in a moral dilema, because we were told not to open the box and bring it right back once we had aquired it. Should we open it and see what was inside, then turn the guy in if it was evil, or should we just finish the job? Well, as I said the information was false, and after we bested his friend and got the box we sat in our inn room discussing it. We were ambushed by our employers cronies and two of us were captured (Me and the fighter) and tossed in the basement of their stronghold. They fed us regularly, but made the mistake of giving us a knife and fork to eat our food, so one day when the guards came back to retrieve our dishes, the fighter hid behind the door as they opened it. I made a stunning attack on the first guard (I actually killed him with that attack :D ), and the fighter used the knife to take out the second guard as he walked in. He rolled a natural 20, and confirmed with a natural 20. The DM gave some nice fluff text that the fighter basically jammed the knife in the guards throat and nearly severed his head in a spectacular display of blood and gore. It was a rather satisfying experiance. We broke out and found the rest of our party back at the inn room waiting. Aldarionn |
| Radijs12-03-05, 09:45 PM | Do you know what happens when you behead chickens? They run around for a little while. We can just wait for them to chop our heads of and then run out the courtyard. An actual suggestion by a man as cunning as a fox who has graduated C u m laude from Cunning University. Sod Off Baldrick! |
| thefighter12-03-05, 10:06 PM | I once managed to knock out a guard with my bare hands, take his long sword, and beat the crap out of everyone, since I had many feats with long swords and was level 18 :D lol, the lawful good Monk in the party was p!ssed off. |
| KwarkyFlame12-03-05, 10:29 PM | Use a feat called Spell Hand which gives you the ability to cast mage hand as a spell like ability. Use that to get the keys. |
| Piff12-03-05, 10:40 PM | #X. This is pretty obvious. Act like a Kender or better yet be a Kender. You will get kicked out pretty quickly. |
| Callista12-04-05, 01:39 AM | @Rolof: Yep, you're right! :cookie: |
