We all had it. One of the charecters that we have loved and nourished since the very first roll met a very brilliant death. Lets share shall we. I'll start.

1. My first oriental adventure we have been at a tournament (against our will) cough cough. We decide to make a break for it and my shamon blows up our door with a necklace of fireball and we make a break for it. Well said to say we are all 3rd level and end up fighting 40 2nd level monks and my charecter dies from the overwhelming numbers. With all the other charecters making out or at least not dying.

2. I was dming a group and it included a rogue, fighter, wizard, and a barbarian. The rogue went to go rob a few nobles. The barbarian decides he will follow the rogue and watch him. The rogue steals a bunch of stuff and runs, after killing the nble and his wife. The gaurds stop him and he makes his bluff check. Then the Rogue goes back to sleep. The barbarian decided to head back as well. However the gaurds stop him. Now i make them actually make up a lie with their roll. His was, "I was with that guy." and pointed to the casually walking rogue. He then rolled a 5 for bluff and was hauled to jail. The rest of the party tried to save him by overrunning the jail, but by the time they got their, his tortures had killed him. :weep:

3. 12th lv. Elf wizard/mounted archer JUST had to take on the entire 8th Orge garrison. The player, when asked why his elf did this, said he was "hungry and just kinda wanted the game to end".

In the dungeon beneath the evil temple was a chest. And on the chest sat a magical cat. When we tried te open the chest, the cat dealt 1 poit of damage. So we killed the cat. Ah.. but now a puma sat on the chest. So we killed the puma. And a lion sat briefly on the chest, as we killed it outright. Now a rashakha stood next to the chest, and it was a bit harder to kill. But as we succeded, a major devil appeared. And we tried to kill it...

You think that is an ingenous chest try the one that one of my barbarian rogue spent three hours unlocking the three locks and then the chest still wouldn't open. He spent quite a bit of time trying to figure out why and he finally figured out that the chest was just a block of wood carved in the shape of a chest.

We were on a mission for some baron to kill a black dragon. It would have been no problem, since we hd a dragonslayer and a pair of dragon stalkers in our group. But then we came to the dragon, and he tail slapped my character into a pool of acid.

My party of a wizard, a hexblade, a cleric, a paladin, and myself as a ranger stumbled upon a black dragon in an underground passageway. The first round of battle, the hexblade falls to the frightful presence and takes off running back down the corridor. As the paladin preps with a few buff spells, the wizard and myeslf manage to deal a fair amount of damage to the dragon. He does not appreciate this, and his lack of appreciation results in the near-death experience of us both. As the cleric moves about healing, the paladin finally wades in with a flame shield granted to him by the cleric. The now-flaming bastion of good charges in against the black dragon and starts to deal some nice damage. Meanwhile the hexblade has turned about and is sprinting back to the fight. He arrives just in time to see a body wreathed in slowly dying flames fly across the path and slam into the wall five feet from him. Yes, indeed, our noble paladin friend had got tail-slapped to his doom! The hexblade took off running down the hall again.

Let me further explain the "joy" of my sig. Our party was high level, nearly 20. We had had an intelligent sword for a while. Then pit feinds came after it. So we sold it. To a demilich (I, the paladin, was knocked out by the pure evil of the residence, and thus did not take active part in the deal. I did not know it was a demilich at the time). It offered multiple payments to our group. We ended up going with small diamonds. These turned out to be soul gems. The souls of little orphans and newborns, turned into gems for both money and spell components. Our true neutral wizard was all for selling them to devils/demons, or using them himself. Of course, my paladin gets a vision from Heironeous saying "Get them to my temple, or be completely kicked from the order." So between me and the cleric, who had a similar experience, and the convincing of the 6 gnomish paladins of Garl Glittergold (the entirety of said order), we were off to the plane of Union to purify the gems at the temple. Unknown to all but the wizard, the wizard (true neutral remember) had bargained with a pit feind about selling the soul gems. The pit fiend came with some lesser fiends after them. First they tried talking us out of them. Obviously, that didn't work. (They were actually in a safe deposit box, we just had the key). So combat starts. I decide my pally is gonna go for the pit fiend. Our monk (who had recently joined) was frightened and ran away, the wizard was running on empty and go killed, and our ranged-combat ranger proved ineffective. The TWF ranger (CorSec) was doing smashingly, and the cleric was giving a good accounting. I hung back a couple of rounds, and did a couple of buffs (as per my sig, as well as activating shocking on my blade, since I was a lvl...something Shining Blade PrC at that point). I set up the charge, and...missed. Then I got grappled. And promptly died. In fact, only the cleric, who put up a prismatic sphere around himself in midair (celestial armor), and the monk who ran away, lived through that. All the rest of us got ressed at Heironeous' temple, as well as getting hefty rewards for our good serivice. Oh, some solars or something showed up and chased down the pit fiend, after we were dead. That was death 4 for this guy....that black dragon was 1. (2 and 3 were much more mundane).

in a level 20 1 shot campaign, my dwarven cleric was beaten to death by none other than the major artifact, The Ugly Stick.

Not exactly a charicter death, it was the party NPC, but close. In an evil campaign the Pc(yes only one)and his partner work for an assasion guild. They are sent on a mission to take out an orc who has been raiding merchants with his ettin body guards up in the hills. They kill one ettin on the way and come to the base of a cliff. They know he lives in a cave near here so they decide to climb up. On the way up they break through the morning fog at the base of the cliff to see an ettin lookout standing with long spears in hand. They make it through the baroge and fight him on the cliff. They flank and dissarm him(well..... he was dumb and threw his spears so really he dissarmed himself) so he grapples the NPC and trys to throw him over the edg. The Pc was right after the ettin and killed him next round.I ruled that the NPC could stick on the ettin's hand because he still had spider climb but he was at 0 hp. After giving him a healing potion the Pc trys to help him climb back up to the ledg(the ettin was so close to the edg that he almost fell off and his head and arm were hanging off the edg). The NPC fails his climb check and then the reflex save I gave them both a save to try and grasp hands. I rule the pc catches him and can hang on.The npc fails the str check and Falls off backward screaming down through the morning mist and dissapears. It just looked cool in my head.(sorry that was longer than I ment it to be)

Ok i got a couple. 1st one was My group consisted of a Human cleric, Dwarf fighter, half-elf paladin, elf rog/wiz, and a elf ftr/wiz. We were about 7th lvl or so, and doing a dungeon crawl pretty simple task was to find a cleric who was using corpses for expiriments blah blah blah. So we got to the cleric eventually, rolled int and so on...about the 3rd Round...the Dwarf is gonna take a shot at one of the cleric's guards who grappled the rog/wiz, he missed the bodyguard and critted our party member for like 26dmg. lol

2nd one was in the town we started in, no biggy really small about 250 people (yawn). Well the rog was gonna steal some pies from mrs smith. He missed the spot check on her dog...and it attacked crited yet again...and it killed him. I remind you, it was a typical 3hp dog from the MM1 lol.

Another one took place inside a instant fortress (one from the dmg, durins probably wrong name tho)...stupid rogue hit the "activation button" and turned into jam. This was when 3e came out and 2 of us never played before. Thought it was pretty danm stupid, funny at the same time. Considering we were high lvl but being chaotic and evil for most of the party we decided not to tell him.

1st level fighter.
Butt-naked.
240 ft underwater.
Grappling a Sahaguin (who was full-health and eating my face).
At -8 HP.
And starting to make Fort saves to keep from drowning.

That was my first character death. Taught me to jump in the water to release our ship from the hooks...

I haven't... of course I've had the party wizard turn around and fireball us once from essentially the same problem. :D TOASTY!

One of the better character deaths my party experienced was actually the wolf companion to the party Ranger. They were taking on a white dragon and the ranger was dropped to -8 hit points. The wolf companion attempted a bite attack to protect his ranger and rolled a nat 20, plus confirmed the threat!

The final blow meant for the ranger instead pasted the wolf, but gave the party wizard the half second he needed to cast his final spell and deal the death blow to the dragon. That was an "Edge of your seat" battle. The ranger buried her wolf compainion with honors and we role played out a quick little ceremony.

he didnt die, b/c of nonleathal, but still a good long story.

got captured by drow, had to fight in an arena. the other guys was a high lvl monk(+5 lvls) our barb saw him, and just dead rushed him.chargeing, axe flailing, rdy to kill. rolls a 3. monk sees him coming, power, ki, gay monk skill atks a nat 20 confirmed. drops him in one hit, gasping for breath. we all got knocked out, but still the way he went down was funny.

the entire party, of a (PC)nuetral barb with a great axe, a nuetral fighter (me) with chain daggers, a (PC)NE assassin, and a monk/sorcerer. we enter a spire and are told to roll will saves...... the PC's make it...... the monk:( had a 50/50 chance to survive after he failed.... he got 50 exactly, which we found out, as we heard a snap and a thump, was the monk on the ground lol.

then there was my sorcerer who polymorphed into a fish and was eatten by a snapping turtle... talk about disgraceful

I havent.. not trough magic, that is. The group occasionaly is cursed with some chaos disease that that makes one playermake something incredibly stupid that brings hell to the party.. and only to us poor players.. :nonono:

I haven't... of course I've had the party wizard turn around and fireball us once from essentially the same problem. :D TOASTY!

Been there.. Done that.. Intentionally!! :D short explanation: Fire imunity + hotheaded melee/spellcaster (battle minded cleric) + special weapon (a poleaxe with ŽdellayedŽ fireball st to detonate on hit.. 3 stackeable charges) triple-charged -> ther was a trap, i attacked the first foe without thinking. One fool wizard was stupid or mad enough to stand right by my side. Result, near dead (less then 5 hp) wizard.. the foes? FIRE giants!! All minus the wiz/player:

On topic... Two deaths, same campaign, last major batle. Place: up in the sky near teh flying dark enclave. The battle begun with a cutscene of the lich griffin fighting a good griffin (in fact both were antropomorphs and spellcasters - familiars of epic casers). The good one were their allies.

1st: half dragon azer decides to grapple a lich-griffin to force a dive-o-death (like undeads need their wings to fly) = i ruled 2 rounds to hit the ground and the lich went quickend hold (forgot dragons are imune, but the palyer forgot as wel), fly-version of extenuous retreat (down dive); lesser wish (max damage), quickened teleport.. - yeah, i was mean. and the dwarf player was foolish - result? one nifty crater on the woods faaar below.. :evillaugh

2nd: Good griffin is KO-ed and starts to fall towards the enclave. The half-celestial ELF (forgot the class) dare say "IŽll catch him!!".. result, sandwich cratter..
1/2 C Elf player:  :ghosted: :banghead:
Other Players: :gah:
Me: :uh-huh: :nonono:

Near deaths:
Nameless Elven fighter in green (wich we called "Link"): In the middle of a 20Ž wide large stone bridge while a troop (20) of raging barbarian bugbears wielding one great axe on each hand rushed towards him: "IŽll hold them!!"
(saved by the wizard after going to only -7.. lasted 2 rounds!)

"Link" again: After deciding to return walking to the town while the party simply teleported back, the mightly link is faced by the lava pit they crossed on the dungeonŽs entry.. and of course the rope burned away. "IŽll leap it!"
First was a running leap to a small rock-island mid-pit: OK.. Seccond one was a standing leap to theother edge... missed by 1 "oops"... (i kindly allowed the poor chap to make a climb check afer the first wave of damage.. and miraculously, he survived the damage (levels + con does wonders)... and crawled his sorry crispy self with 3 hp all the 2 week travel to the main citty)

The party cleric got pushed --no magic or bull rushes; someone just reached out and pushed him-- off a cliff. On the way down he was impaled on a spike of blue ice and frozen stiff and he kept falling. For 3 miles.

Psion on a boat: I take potshots at the passing fish.
DM: A zegludon rises out of the water and chomps you.
Psion: :censored:

DM: The grell tears into you with its beak for (rolls) eight damage plus one vile.
Sorceror. Shoot. That puts me at 0 hp.
(next round)
The grell lashes at you with five tentacles...four hit. That's 11 damage. Also make 16 Fortitude saves.
Sorceror: I'M DEAD ANYWAY!
DM: Oh, yeah.
