| Toloran11-11-06, 03:05 PM | Otherwise known as "Is that a city in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?" My character in a recent D&D game managed to acquire (what amounts to) a modfied bag of holding that not only has enough room so that it COULD contain a city, it in fact does. (This was result from a poorly worded Wish and a DM who has a sense of humor/is an ass). Regardless of how i got it, I now have a perfectly good (and portable) city at my disposal. The city is a (relatively) normal city that has no knowledge of the world outside the bag. I can use the bag like normal but my DM described my sticking my hand into it like "A giant hand that appears out of nowhere in the sky" (from the perspective of the inhabitants). However, if I (or anything/one else) goes completely into the bag, we shrink down to "normal" size (and fall to our doom unless we use a fly spell or something). So this brings up the question: What would YOU do with a portable city? |
| Revan5411511011-11-06, 03:09 PM | Human sacrifice to and an evil god that could work out for you (if you could get the little population out of the bag) |
| Toloran11-11-06, 03:11 PM | Human sacrifice to and an evil god that could work out for you (if you could get the little population out of the bag) Oh, getting them all out is easy: Just turn the bag inside out :D (the hard part is not dying when the whole contents of a city appears right next to you). |
| Comus11-11-06, 03:33 PM | If I wanted to sacrifice everyone, I'd take the bag to a lake or ocean, open it up, and dunk it. Bam - death by drowning. Might only work if you want to sacrifice to Bilip...Blbli... the lobster-lady. |
| Need_A_Life11-11-06, 04:09 PM | Quick, spotless escape... Seriously, run away from the city guards and use whatever dirty trick will win you ~12 seconds, use the first round to dive into an alley and pull out the bag and the second to jump into the bag and casting featherfall. Oh, and what was the wording of the wish "I wish we were near a city right now!" "I wish I had my own city!" "I wish I could have an entire city in this bag of holding!" "Imagine this guys. It's like a bag... that you can pull buildings out of" A :cookie: to whoever gets the last reference. |
| katkov11-11-06, 04:41 PM | Stick your head in and demand tribute then jump in remove the tribute then jump out and the tribute should grow with you |
| Toloran11-11-06, 05:12 PM | Oh, and what was the wording of the wish "I wish we were near a city right now!" "I wish I had my own city!" "I wish I could have an entire city in this bag of holding!" "Imagine this guys. It's like a bag... that you can pull buildings out of" A :cookie: to whoever gets the last reference. Basically, we had been joking about the Bagworld (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bag_of_holding#Bagworld) from Knights of the Dinner Table (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knights_of_the_Dinner_Table). Basically, I was trying to figure out how to phrase my wish to get a bag of holding with as much storage space as possible (and still be normal sized on the outside). Well, the DM joked about the Bag of Hefty Holding (the one that leads to bagworld) and I said what amounts to "Yeah, I want a bag like that only sized for a small person and green." I had forgoten to mention i DIDN'T want one with people inside. Oops :x |
| Vanigo11-11-06, 08:25 PM | Bag of rats! Seriously, though, tell us more about this city. How big is it? Where does it get its food - is there farmland in the bag, too? How do the people feel about you? Can you get out on your own, or does someone outside have to let you out? |
| Toloran11-11-06, 08:36 PM | Bag of rats! Seriously, though, tell us more about this city. How big is it? Where does it get its food - is there farmland in the bag, too? How do the people feel about you? Can you get out on your own, or does someone outside have to let you out? I don't know everything about it yet since I just got it at the end of the last session and haven't had a chance to experiment with it yet. So all I know is what my DM told me out of game. The inside is basically a self sufficient town inside the bag. From their point of view, they just live in a very small universe. There is a sun and sky on the inside (although it is in fact just the inside of the bag). The town itself is is in the 1,500 - 2,500 population (or between a small and a large town as per the DMG) in size. As to the exact composition of the town, I have no clue yet. From what my DM has told me, is that when the bag is opened, they cannot see out but they can see what ever is stuck through the opening. The opening is stationary (from the inside) so once you know where it is, it is easy to get to again. The opening will remain open unless someone on the outside closes it (in which case you would be trapped). The terrain (beyond the city) is some farm land and forest. However, if you go too far, it just loops back around to the other side. I am not sure how the ecosystem could survive in such a closed system but I am pretty sure magic is involved somewhere. :p The only other thing I know is that the DM told me that this place could easily be an adventure in and of itself. |
| cog_and_taz11-11-06, 09:30 PM | livvinnit? |
| Comus11-11-06, 10:08 PM | Hm. Maybe you should cast fly, go up a mile or so, then invert the bag over a major city. Then, ask your DM how much XP two cities worth of people gives you. Should be bunches. Pick through the wreckage for treasure. Make sure that you're not particularly attached to either city, or anyone in them. |
| Bowmore11-12-06, 01:36 AM | Stick your head in and demand tribute then jump in remove the tribute then jump out and the tribute should grow with you Just be careful not to jab your eye on a minaret or spire or something. |
| Leo11-12-06, 10:25 AM | Force the city people to pay you tribute, virgins and build you magical stuff or else... |
| thevixie11-12-06, 11:00 AM | Make them pray to you as a god. Watch your divine rank come into existance. |
| Need_A_Life11-12-06, 01:46 PM | Feel cool that you're the Supreme Archruler, Archmagister, Archmage, Royal Knight, High Noble of [small, insignificant farming town]. And find some better titles than the ones I came up with... and a minimum of twelve such titles. |
| Toloran11-12-06, 02:08 PM | Make them pray to you as a god. Watch your divine rank come into existance. Hmm.... I like it. What book are divine ranks out of? The gods in my campaign are currently AWOL so nows a good chance for me :3 |
| Need_A_Life11-12-06, 03:57 PM | Hmm.... I like it. What book are divine ranks out of? The gods in my campaign are currently AWOL so nows a good chance for me :3 Deities and Demigods IIRC. Also in the d20srd But expect to be ignored on the matter, it doesn't specifically say that you can obtain Divine Ranks in any matter, it's all up to the GM. |
| stargate52511-12-06, 04:59 PM | I would simply turn it inside out as soon as you found somewhere you would enjoy ruling a chunk of. Problem is, I cannot for the life of me figure out a way to get the thing oriented correctly (so that your small villiage doesn't land upside down). |
| PSchirf11-12-06, 05:55 PM | My game world includes fey-realms that are semi-closed (pardon the pun) pocket universes. They don't exist inside of bags, such as your town, but they are "elsewhere" in the same sense. Since the residents of these little places are fey, and able to travel in and out of the realms using means that the player characters cannot, some of the questions you face don't occur. Can residents be taken out of the city and into the "real" world? Do the residents understand the outside world? If not, with such a small population, anyone entering the town will obviously be considered an outsider. Do they mind? If not, the military use of the bag becomes quite powerful. You could sneak an entire army into foreign territory... an army that could be well supplied using the very same device. Travel at higher level would be different, as only one person would have to make long trips... leaving the other members of the group to rest up in bagtown. This is especially true once someone can teleport, fly, or shapeshift. |
| tharivol26611-12-06, 06:36 PM | march into an enemy war camp and announce that you are willing to take them unnoticed behind enemy lines. tell them you can take their entire army at once and they wont be spotted. have them all get into the bag and then march back into your territory and find a portable hole and throw it in. you never technically lied so you dont need to make a bluff check and suddenly the enemies are all on the astral plane with only a 10% chance of meeting a friend. and the giths will be grateful for the city worth of building material |
| trapspringer11-12-06, 06:40 PM | If this joker has read HHGthG, then I imagine they will all be armed with cricket bats and bombs shaped like soft balls. Just watch your ass. |
| Romtos11-13-06, 02:23 PM | Extract pain from them and put it in liquid form in bottles. Then, if you extraced the maximum amount of liquid pain, extract their souls. Use this stuff to replace XP when crafting majiek stuff as mentioned in the BoVD. |

| Alakar11-15-06, 04:08 PM | Sounds like a set up for a future PC. On another note. Develope the city inside. Make it grow and increase in wealth. Open a wizard acedemy and have a wizard train students. Open a temple of yourself, and as the city grows, so do your followers. Make regular visits to enforce your will, and to hand out devine decrees. When a student of the wizard acdemy, or a knight, or what ever becomes powerful enough, "Ascend him" to your world. Make said character a god of something. And get your own pantheon going. As the mages develope and learn traveling spells, your greatness will be spread through out the multiverse. Living Gods.....Oh Yeah One more thing, you can always use that spell that expands planes to expand your little world. |
| Spadgris11-15-06, 05:32 PM | Help people who need to flee from something (be it their wife or their exicuter). Make them pay you a load of money and 1 year of service in the town for life time membership. After the year they are allowed to leavebut they dont have to. Just see to it that no evil all-killing maniacs get their way in. This will give you a nice fat one time money bag when they enter and free minor services for a year. Also, see to it that your people is well educated and magicly adapt. Solving your DMs riddles and crafting minor magical items. Have the aproximate landing zone free of buildings and poeple. That way, if you throw something in the bag, they wont die from shoeformed meteors. |
| Derren S.11-18-06, 05:42 PM | On another note. Develope the city inside. Lofty goals. You should first find a way that this city survives without acces to food, ressources, waste disposal or even water and fresh air. |
| stargate52511-18-06, 06:38 PM | Lofty goals. You should first find a way that this city survives without acces to food, ressources, waste disposal or even water and fresh air. it's got countryside around it. My guess is that it's just large enough to be self-supporting. (trees enough to balance out the animal's air consumption, etc.) |
| Toloran11-18-06, 06:56 PM | Lofty goals. You should first find a way that this city survives without acces to food, ressources, waste disposal or even water and fresh air. One word: Magic. |

Keep the city going, and demand that they give you different items/tributes and the like, or you will hurt them. An claim you are a god of some sorts. And if they obey, then reward them, and if they dont, then punish them. :) |
| ChimericPhase11-19-06, 01:55 AM | Lofty goals. You should first find a way that this city survives without acces to food, ressources, waste disposal or even water and fresh air. There are cities...encased in toruses ...being in a bag is only a minor inconvience in comparison. ... Edit: a city... Obviously this is not a "bag of holding with a city in it" because bag of holdings (a) cannot sustain living creatures and (b) just arent big enough. This is a Bag of Town. |
| Derren S.11-19-06, 06:04 AM | it's got countryside around it. My guess is that it's just large enough to be self-supporting. (trees enough to balance out the animal's air consumption, etc.) That must be quite large for having enough farmland to sustain a city, enough plants for fresh air and enough fresh water to sustain all the plants, animals and humans. And then it needs to have enough ressources like wood, stone and iron for the city maintiance + space for waste disposal. I assume that the bag also contains a miniature sun? If not everything will die very fast. |

If not everything will die very fast. . .it involves magic. Fresh air co8uld be, for example,. constantly replinished by a connection with the Elemental plain of air. Fresh water from the elemental plane of Water . . . Geez, talk about nitpicking. It exists and is self - supporting, that is part of the DEFINITION of the itme, how about proceeding from there in the spirit of the question? |
| Spadgris11-19-06, 09:16 AM | Talking about reality on the object "Bag of Town" seems as a waste of breath. It was brought there by magic. Magic i tell you! How fun would it be to to realise that the PCs themselves exists in an even larger Bag of Town, or Bag of World. |
| PSchirf11-19-06, 10:26 AM | I'd make a few ruling about the city... these may be obvious. I'd make it impossible to "dump" the bag city... I'd remove the great-hand mentioned in the initial post. I'd make the hearths inside the city magically consume fuel at 1/10th the normal rate. I'd make fruit trees magically grow fruit very quickly in the pocket-realm. As a related note: I'd have beekeeping as a city-wide industry. I'd make a river flow through the city, and have it loop as per the terrain. Fill the river with an infinite supply of fish... as they are harvested replacements magically appear. I'd make the fields magically produce 10x the amount of potatoes that the same field would produce outside of the bag. I'd make the intelligent population have a very low birthrate. Perhaps the population isn't human? I'd leave other plant and animal reproduction/growth rates alone... leaving the population to treat fish, potatoes, and fruit as their staples and other foods as delicacies. I'd make the climate inside the bag include seasons tied to the real world, but I'd have the lowest possible temperature just below freezing, and the highest temperature 23c/73f in the bag. |

If not everything will die very fast. It was mentioned that the bag contained a mini sun. And to be completely honest, a naturally recycling closed system is not hard to maintain once it's properly started. Moot really, considering this isn't a true closed system, there could easily be magical sustenance going on (the bag could get bigger as the need for land increases) and I'll also bet that air is also being let in via the hole. I'd make it impossible to "dump" the bag city...Why? I'd remove the great-hand mentioned in the initial post.Again, Why? it would be an interesting visual. I'd make the hearths inside the city magically consume fuel at 1/10th the normal rate.Is oxygen consumption a consideration? If there's air being let in via the mouth of the bag there's no reason. I'd make fruit trees magically grow fruit very quickly in the pocket-realm. As a related note: I'd have beekeeping as a city-wide industry.I understand this, faster harvesting and whatnot. I'd make a river flow through the city, and have it loop as per the terrain. Fill the river with an infinite supply of fish... as they are harvested replacements magically appear.or they could just breed... I'd make the fields magically produce 10x the amount of potatoes that the same field would produce outside of the bag.potatoes? Again, you could just say that the land is more fertile. I'd make the intelligent population have a very low birthrate. Perhaps the population isn't human? The birthrate won't matter as long as the deathrate is roughly equal. I'd leave other plant and animal reproduction/growth rates alone... leaving the population to treat fish, potatoes, and fruit as their staples and other foods as delicacies.Okay... I'd make the climate inside the bag include seasons tied to the real world, but I'd have the lowest possible temperature just below freezing, and the highest temperature 23c/73f in the bag.Mini paradise... nice. Bolds are mine. |
| PSchirf11-19-06, 09:41 PM | I'll try to answer each in order. Why would I make it impossible to dump the city into the real world? Because the result is far too large to justify the item. Plus, if you don't leave via the bag's opening why can you dump the bag? This ties in with my removal of the "hand in the sky"... Why would I remove the "hand in the sky"? Because I'd make the "bag" be a gate into a pocket realm... no an actual container per se. Why? Because it makes the ground looping back onto itself feel more right to me... the bag sides are not there, so why is a hand inserted from above? The reduction in fuel construction speed I'd introduce to keep natural resource harvest requirements to a minimum. It takes a lot of land to support a city... why not reduce the land needed through a few minor changes to the way the little universe works? I limited the food production to potatoes instead of all foodstuffs to keep the bag from being able to produce more "interesting" plants quickly. No other real reason, and saying that the land is just extremely fertile would work too. As for birth/death rate... I just can't picture a pocket city as being extremely dangerous. Death would appear to come later than it would in the outside world, making a lower birth rate as a good balance... |
| Alakar11-20-06, 10:15 AM | I wonder what would happen if it got hit with mordy's Disjunction? What happens in an antimagic field? What happens if some crafty wizard in the bag crafts a portable hole? The fun with all this is just off the charts. I want a city in a bag now. Vacation fun for the whole family!!! |
| Braids11-20-06, 02:56 PM | I'd make the intelligent population have a very low birthrate. Perhaps the population isn't human? What we need here is some sort of new race. Baggians...chubby little people about half the size of humans [Which lets them use less room and need less food/oxygen/water]. They live long lives with a relatively small population. Perhaps they could live in some sort of underground home to maximize the space available to them. I would imagine that having no enemies would leave these Baggians with joyful lives filled with ale and song and games. I could also see them with a weaker government as normal government responsibilities would not be necessary. |

| Koji11-20-06, 07:06 PM | Employ some craftsmen and alchemists within the city to keep you well-stocked, even when you're in the bottom of some hellhole of a dungeon. Hide it somewhere and sleep in it when you're in a dangerous area. Have the rogue put the rest of the party inside and sneak around without having to worry about the party making noise. Raise up an army, infiltrate enemy territory, and unleash your very own very mobile strike force. Cast Dominate Person on someone in the bag, and have him "Predict" what the hand in the sky is going to do. Build a religion around the thing and rule the place with an iron fist (literally!) |
| Scalamander11-20-06, 08:01 PM | Get you and your characters to smoke some good herb and blow the smoke into the bag. Then once its good and full of smoke get everyone to go inside. You have just hot boxed an entire town...in a bag! Righteous! |
