| Illeveun Bloodblaze11-25-05, 01:20 AM | Since there are alot of other 101 threads, here's another one What are the worst campaign settings a DM has put you in? |
| Steel Cobra11-25-05, 01:46 AM | 1) Me and other PC's were put in a town and basically all there was to do was loot and the girls to be *****s (actual) Kinda sucked 2)Retrive your slippers (N64 superman game quest) 3)Make love to 3 Commers women and 1 man (real) |
| a_psh11-25-05, 02:02 AM | I don't really think there are 101 bad campaign settings out there, unless you count homebrew stuff, but it's kind of hard to describe what's wrong with an entire homebrew setting in a single paragraph. Thus, I don't think this works well as a 101 humor thread topic. I'll help get this thread up to the magic number anyway, though... #2-99. Maztica. |
| Earthcrosser59911-25-05, 02:39 AM | I really really really dislike Sandstorm or any other desert campaign settings. I've played in at least 2 of them with very competent DMs and I didn't enjoy either. It's just too bland. |
| guru789211-25-05, 03:35 AM | acually this diviates from the citeria (nobody suffered though this) but... i made a campaighn world, rich with background and story and towns... then i realized... there was no campaign potential... it kinda sucked. so now im working on a war campaign that greatly uses the 'heros of' books. should turn out ok... |
| SnowbearK11-25-05, 03:47 AM | The "it was all just a dream" campaign. |
| Novacat11-25-05, 04:50 AM | First off, it's mostly 1001 threads, but 101 works as well, I guess. Second, campaign settings don't suck (except Eberron and, to a lesser extent, Faerun). DM's with campaign settings suck. In that light, I'll name a few bad DMs. Donny, Jason, Nick... (real people) |
| Ged Coldplain11-25-05, 05:44 AM | okay, this "setting" was about a wampire rough, a half dragon fighter, that go sent on a "quest" with this level 40?!?! npc. after my dm found out my wampire was immune to poison and disease (after removing children of the night, dominate, and running DR as once a round, and not each attack) he made my undead dude become poisoned... well, after that WE TRAVELED TO THE SURFACE OF THE SUN!, jupp ladies and gentlemen, a wampire... walking on the surface of the sun... we had these GAY belts that made us immune to the effects of the sun (heat, lack of air... as i was a breathing wampire now), but not fire in general... okay, after comming to the TEMPLE on the sun, the npc, started blasting all the salamanders there, with FIREBALL.... don't ask... (scary thing this dude is not a noob) then, behold; he left. And we had to explore the temple on the sun.... well we got some +10 katanas, and for some reason killed the greatwyrms (VORPAL katana and crit from fighter, and one annoyed dm, but more greatwyrms came anyways...) (we where level 9, me level 1... as i where a wampire) that came to fly us over the gap in the temple... well the plot was that all the gods where dead, and the only god whas the dm's npc... and he sent us to the sun... to quest for him... |
| ErinLyger11-25-05, 07:38 AM | I still dislike Forgotten Realms, even after all these years. I prefer lower powered campaigns. |
| Chaotis11-25-05, 08:01 AM | Did you constantly mispell "Vampire", or is "Wampire" something I haven't heard of.(Not kidding, I'm really new) |
| lord_blackfang11-25-05, 08:19 AM | My current DM told me about a game where he was a player; it was a high-detail simulation of a farm. "Roll a Milking check" |
| Novacat11-25-05, 08:49 AM | okay, this "setting" was about a wampire rough, a half dragon fighter, that go sent on a "quest" with this level 40?!?! npc. after my dm found out my wampire was immune to poison and disease (after removing children of the night, dominate, and running DR as once a round, and not each attack) he made my undead dude become poisoned... well, after that WE TRAVELED TO THE SURFACE OF THE SUN!, jupp ladies and gentlemen, a wampire... walking on the surface of the sun... we had these GAY belts that made us immune to the effects of the sun (heat, lack of air... as i was a breathing wampire now), but not fire in general... okay, after comming to the TEMPLE on the sun, the npc, started blasting all the salamanders there, with FIREBALL.... don't ask... You are painful to read. |
| Deacon Liadon11-25-05, 09:20 AM | *Snip* Why do I get the impression that this is sarcasm in its most extreme form? |
| lugnut7111-25-05, 10:15 AM | Hey lay off the guy is from Norway, unlikely that English is his first langauge. Although I will agree with him that is a pretty crappy campaign. |
| DragonDeadite11-25-05, 11:56 AM | Hm... worste settings... FR, Ravenloft, Eberon, Greyhawk, and just about any other published Campaign setting... except for midnigh dangit! I've never like any published setting (except Midnight dangit!) that I have ever played in, just too bland for me to get into it. |
| wolfram_stout11-25-05, 11:57 AM | The campaign where the PCs have to start off as commoners and will gain PC class levels only after adventuring. I saw one post a long while back where the DM was talking about 4-5 sessions before the players got their first PC class level The concept has merit. Except, the players know what they want to play, so it will not be an organic..."oh I am a wizard now...wow". Maybe some DM could do it right, I am not that DM nor have I met him. wolfram |
| Malruhn11-25-05, 01:50 PM | I have played in two: First: Nearly every NPC was a god. No, really!! You could tell just by looking at them that they were unbeatable/unhittable/unkillable. Then, there were the "others". These were the fodder. Walking down the street, you would be surrounded by these "gods" and suddenly see a "normal" person. These people were easily identifiable as being "mortal", and we were HONOR bound to kill them and loot their bodies. They were all level one commoners. The guy kept asking why we didn't like it... for YEARS... Two: First scene in the first adventure, we are summoned in to see the ruler to be recruited into the adventure. The DM says, "Papa Smurf says, 'I'm glad that you came to our assistance so quickly...'" I asked if the guy was a couple inches tall and blue. The DM said, "Yeah..." I walked out right there. |
| a_psh11-25-05, 02:54 PM | Second, campaign settings don't suck (except Eberron and, to a lesser extent, Faerun). DM's with campaign settings suck. In that light, I'll name a few bad DMs. Sooo... anything still being currently published sucks? That's... helpful. |
| Novacat11-25-05, 04:55 PM | Sooo... anything still being currently published sucks? That's... helpful. Glad I could help. |
| Aeolus9111-25-05, 05:32 PM | "Midnight Dangit!" sounds like a fun setting... where'd you buy it? Personally, I don't think I've ever been in a bad campaign, but I've been thrown into some pretty stupid situations to start a game off. Such as... DM: You are on a desert island, with no boat, no posessions, and no clothes. Me: How'd I get there? DM: You just are, okay? Now, roll initiative, because there are lizardfolk running at you! Me: *gets up to leave* Or this one, the low point of my D&D career... DM: You are in jail. Me: WHAT?! DM: Yeah.... you tried to steal a chicken and they caught you. Me: *angry* No I didn't! I never tried to steal anything! I'M A DRUID! DM: Yes you did... remember Rule 0? I'm the DM, so what I say goes. Besides, druids are hippies, so they would try to steal a chicken to "free" it or whatever. Now, your execution is scheduled for tomorrow... Me: *voice rising an octave or two* EXECUTION?! IT'S A F****IN' CHICKEN! DM: Yeah, they're really tough on crime here. Me: ****!!!!! *gets up and leaves* These were both the same guy, the second instance was his second chance. No more chances for him, obviously... Me: |
| a_psh11-25-05, 10:26 PM | Glad I could help. (turning my sarcasm OFF here) That was a quality retort, sir. |
| SnowbearK11-26-05, 05:14 AM | Oh, and I'll add also any campaign (and it's setting) wherein the players are playing themselves transported mystically into the game. No, it doesn't matter if there's a little bald guy or not. |
| Iabes_Q_c_a_Mahorella11-26-05, 04:29 PM | Duck Island. It rained ducks. And there was an artifact: Wings of Duck. ...they turned you into a crazy duck-hybrid. .... with amazing duck powers. ... like the ability to quack. .... No joke. ... I nearly throtled the DM... |
| DarknessEternal11-26-05, 04:38 PM | Forgotten Realms. How this setting can work when every other person you meet is an epic level character with divine abilities is beyond me. You are poo, everyone else is a god. Yeah, that's fun. |
| a_psh11-26-05, 04:49 PM | You are poo, everyone else is a god. Yeah, that's fun. How it works (making fun of a particular campaign style here, folks - if it doesn't apply to you, don't complain; if you complain, I'll just assume it does): Yes, you're poo, you see, but you are the Poo of Destiny. See, while every town has a council of archmages defending it and every guardsman standing next to a latrine is a level 5 paladin, all of these living gods look at you and see the amazing potential within the walking carcass that is your level 1 body. They know that, if they can just farm off enough menial chores to you, you'll be around to save the world in epic and world-not-changing ways later, on the off chance that Elminster gets that lower back thing again or his favorite soaps are on TV and he can't be bothered to save Toril (Elminster: "Nope, sorry, can't do that. I'm watchin' mah stories."). Then they can go back to treating you like dirt. Arise, god-poo, and claim your place in the world! What? At least it's fun for the DM! Err, kinda... (No, really, it's not.) |
| lord warrior11-28-05, 05:30 PM | Fr |
| mrshupizdumaterinu11-28-05, 05:35 PM | Duck Island. It rained ducks. And there was an artifact: Wings of Duck. ...they turned you into a crazy duck-hybrid. .... with amazing duck powers. ... like the ability to quack. THAT IS THE BEST CAMPAIGN EVER!!! |
| MysteryGilgamesh11-28-05, 07:48 PM | Forgotten Realms. How this setting can work when every other person you meet is an epic level character with divine abilities is beyond me. You are poo, everyone else is a god. Yeah, that's fun. I love the sheer level of ignorance about the FR setting. I really do. It's simply astounding, really and truely. Anyway, more on topic... Low magic settings. I hate'em. A +1 sword being the high point of your career after countless battles is a blatently **** reward, no matter how much "flavor" and "history" has been tacked onto it. Ravenloft. Ooh, spooky. Or not. The only frightning part about Ravenloft is the high character turnover rate because, unlike FR, there really are epic gods of evil doom literally just strolling around like they own the place, because they do! |

I dunno, I liked the brief stint I did in Ravenloft. It helps if you have a DM who handles horror well. The sanity checks are a nice addition, though they tend to :censored: rogues over even more than heavy combat games (blasted low will save :headexplo ) Besides, the RL DMG has some excellent horror-setting tips (I especially liked the random spot/listen checks even when there's no danger around idea) |
| elven warriorXX11-28-05, 10:51 PM | Okay here are some parts from adventure 3 (this was the last chance). DM: okay you are in a town, do what you want (all adventures started like this, even if we were in a forest last time we played). ME(barbarian7/fighter2, is a half-orc): okay I will go to the forest and i will look for pretty flowers and rocks that look like my grandma. (NOTE: I do stuff like this to bug him but it never has an effect). DM: okay you find 3 rocks and 14 flowers and tinker bell (he was not kidding). KERNOK (dwarf cleric 8/paladin 1): I will go to the pub. DM: okay both of you are magically transported to a dark forest with a door and a sign that says "doom dungeon of death and blood". ME: ooo torthak like blood! Later DM: okay you have freed the fair queen and killed the evil bald midgets. You see a door on the other side of the room. ME: were did the queen go? DM: umm she just went away...back to her kingdom...yea KERNOK: okay I open the door. DM: you see a 5ft room with 4 orcs and a huge table that is at lest 20ft long ME: ??? WTF you said a 5ft room? how the **** could a 20ft table fit in there? DM: it just does, its magic stupid! this is a fantasy game! (I almost through my dice at him but I had free time so I played a bit more) A wee bit later DM: okay the goblins have taken your weapons (yes goblins for 9th level PCs -.-) ME: okay I throw my shoe at them DM: -rolls- they explode and blood shoots every were. ME: WTF man my shoe is a weapon of DEATH! DM: okay a rancor comes out of a hole in the floor (no hole before) and he attacks you. ME (gets highest roll on Intiv): I throw my other shoe at him DM: he chokes on it and dies and gives you a Hotdog that shots fireballs that look like monkeys. Then the king of pants comes down at tells you to go on a quest to find the lost underwear of MooKin, it can be found on the plane of elemental poo. He was not kidding and he was not even smiling when he told us this. I just gave him a stupid look and got up and left and did not talk to him for a week XD He WILL NEVER DM AGAIN!!! |
| bartleby4211-29-05, 01:36 AM | Look any campain with magical hot dogs are head and sholders above FR. I mean does Elminster have a talking sausage? Hmm? Does Drizzit occasionaly have to buy relish for his gear? Clearly superior even to Duck world... |
| Draco Strang11-29-05, 02:29 AM | The "it was all just a dream" campaign. That was SO hip to pull right after Zelda: A Link to the Past was published in '93. My older D&D buddies were telling me how they played in about 3 "all a dream" campaigns by different DMs who just all happened to be Zelda nuts. Hm......... I can't really complain. I sent my players time-hopping in a "Groundhog Day" fashion right after Majora's Mask was released. |
| Gurthoron11-29-05, 11:41 AM | Wow. Just wow. These hurt. I thought my setting were the world was in a longstanding war for what I see now as a crappy reason was a bad setting. (Portal opened to Abyss, instead of bringing demons brought out the 'essense' of the abyss and distributed the evil and chaos throughout the world, sparking conflict. I think I got the idea from a book or something.) But anyplace were there is a plane of poo . . . hell, even if the DM uses the word poo . . . that just won't work. Now to go rinse the stupid out of my head. With alcohol. And maybe some bleach. |

| WayneTheGame11-29-05, 12:41 PM | To elven_warriorXX: What... the... HELL?!?  You have my deepest sympathies, sir. I wonder, was this DM on acid or some such drug at the time? Or just a complete goofball? |

Or just a complete goofball? I think he was on dope and he did smoke alot XD he was also just 17 at the time (like 2 years ago) but that still does not give him the right to be disturbing like that. He was always weird but this wasa new level for him. I think I just won this little thread :D Thank you WayneTheGame and I did throw him in acid after it was done (mwahahah 10d6 damage each round :evillaugh ) |

| Rabid Dire Wolverine11-29-05, 04:51 PM | I want to do the campaign on duck island. I want great cleave! When it rains ducks, (*SPLAT* *SPLORCH* *CHOP*)x200. Lots of XP, and I sell the meat. | allenchan11-29-05, 07:03 PM | Dark Sun. Complete. Utter. Garbage. I'd take FR or Eberron any day over that. And then this uber high magic homebrew campaign, it was a single giant metropolis, and the only churches were to Asmodeus and Lucifer, and every Jo Shmoe was a level 10 Rogue. All we ever fought was ninja wannabes. ALL THE FRIGGIN TIME. :banghead: |
| feartheinvinceblehamster11-29-05, 07:24 PM | Nah, thats actually an intriguing idea imo. I'd play to see where you went with it, if that were possible. The rift with abyssal essence, or rinsing the stupid out with alchohol and bleach? I would expect a little of both, but thought you might mean one or the other. |
| syntaxerror3711-29-05, 07:56 PM | It seams a bit funny how the most popular published setting, FR, is not getting a lot of love in this thread. Is this just a case of "It's cool not to like popular things on the internet"? I've always been drawn to the seting; the geogrophy, the history, the pantheon(s), the heroes, everything. Heaven forbid you have a lot of magic in your fantasy world. |
| Mr. Sarcastic11-29-05, 09:00 PM | As long as I don't read any novels concerning FR, it's fine. But only then. Seriously. Those ruin all the fun for me. Lesee, the worst campaign setting I've ever played in. Hm. That would have to be the Matrix. Well, it wasn't actually called that, but y'know. Basic premise (And I won't kid, it did sound pretty cool to me at first); Millions of years in the future, the Illithid have become the dominant race in the multiverse. Determined not to repeat the mistakes of the past concerning their slaves (read; Gith), they have turned to farming sentients for all their personal needs, but keep them docile by inserting them into pods connected to a giant Elder Brain, which then generates a psionic pocket reality where the minds of the slaves can roam "free", never knowing of their ultimate fate. This realm is policed by psionic watchmen that destroy dissident minds; Watchmen that can take any shape or form, from the lowliest mouse to the mightiest dragon. Their brains are then harvested for sustenance. Now comes the bit that turned me off. Rather than placing this setting on the outside of these gigantic structures of flesh and psionic energy as a heroic resistance movement, our adventure begins inside. It was basically greyhawk with a cheap excuse to insert all sorts of invulnerable railroading crap in front of us, and we coulnd't complain because it was "part of the setting." So the DM basically called us from the start the slaves of an all-powerful Elder Brain who directed our lives as it saw fit, and expected us to deal. He also said he had no plans of us ever getting free. My hammer, Foolsmiter, saw much work that day. why oh why am I the only fan of Dragonlance in my area that hasn't moved or died or gotten whipped into cubicle-worker shapes that don't play D&D? WHHHYYYYYYYYY!!! :weep: |
| Always-Late11-29-05, 10:22 PM | So why does Eberron suck so? |
| DarknessEternal11-29-05, 10:42 PM | It seams a bit funny how the most popular published setting, FR, is not getting a lot of love in this thread. Is this just a case of "It's cool not to like popular things on the internet"? No, my derision is genuine. The characters are all one-dimensional. They are also super-beings. The setting is contrived with so many deus ex mechinas that there's no room for anything else. |
| ErinLyger11-29-05, 10:47 PM | It seams a bit funny how the most popular published setting, FR, is not getting a lot of love in this thread. | Oswald Krato11-29-05, 11:31 PM | I may only have one campaign partially under my belt (see sig), but I like dragonlance already. Kender-handling, solamnic knighthood ((a status in this case, not a prestige class for my char--going leg tactician)), and a pantheon seemingly out of piers anthony or another GOOD book series...liek, OMFG DRAGONLANCE! Sorry, had to just make the remark. |
| Tiran11-30-05, 02:12 AM | kender are hilarious in the book, and i'd play one if I could fast-talk out of my ass, but I don't think I'd want a well played kender in a D&D party that wasn't me. |
| DeeL11-30-05, 02:35 AM | DM: okay a rancor comes out of a hole in the floor (no hole before) and he attacks you. Uuuuuuhhh... 17 years old, you say? I expected to find some stupid homebrew stuff on this thread, but this man might need professional help. Worst campaign I've ever been in - well, it was bad enough that it barely qualified as a campaign. I mean, we were kids. This was back in the days before attaining a million lvls and killing Thor to marry Sif was disdained by serious roleplayers. We had fun with it, so I can't gripe too loudly, but looking back on it now makes me cringe. Regarding the FR controversy, I don't think the Realms should be included here because as far as I can tell, the FR setting has one major problem. Ed Greenwood. I have a lot of FR game materials, and a few of the novels as well. The actual campaign setting is interesting. It is broad and deep, with a wealth of history in every city and castle, and an undercurrent of interacting customs that gives it the kind of verissimilitude I hope to achieve. The novels are crap. I'm sorry, I haven't read one FR novel that didn't infuriate me. All of the narratives, even the ones that weren't written by Greenwood himself, are infused with what I can only call a Greenwoodian pomposity, an overweening concentration on how 'there are mighty people in the world, and the good ones look out for the respectable common folk, even in the face of awesome evil and withering ingratitude, just so the good mighty people can live simple lives of blah blah blah.' And don't get me started on the Avatar books - the behavior of Storm Silverhand and the other Dalelanders in that trilogy was the smelliest case of character rape I have ever seen. Chaotic Good my ***. The problem, I think, is that a lot of FR DMs try to model their campaigns on the novels. That is a terrible mistake. Take Greenwoods innovations and add subtlety and the setting is just fine. |
| King_Bulba11-30-05, 04:55 AM | So why does Eberron suck so? It doesn't... Any setting where the gods can be seen as none existent gets a thumbs up from me. The fact that stereotypical alignments get thrown out the window is just a cherry on top. If you read the above then you know I dislike FR hehe. |
| DarkWarriorKarg11-30-05, 09:24 AM | Dragonlance (original) - Nothing to do and gods dominate EVERYTHING, wielding the hammer on mages more than on clerics. Ravenloft Al-Quadim Never even TOUCHED Maztica Oriental Adventures (original & New) |
| syntaxerror3711-30-05, 11:24 PM | That's fine for you. But many of us prefer a more realistic setting, even when magic is involved. And that's fine for us. Heaven forbid we actually form our own opinions about something, rather than saying "It's the most popular setting, so it must be good" or "It's cool not to like popular things on the internet". I wasn't saying that popular=good. I spend a lot of time on the internet, and it's quite common to see something bashed just because it is popular. I was mearly asking if that was the case. I respect your oppinion and DarknessEternal's oppinions, even if I disagree with them. Mainly because you both presented your belifes in a rational maner instead of just ranting about how FR sucks. |
| stranger_65412-01-05, 12:17 AM | They know that, if they can just farm off enough menial chores to you, you'll be around to save the world in epic and world-not-changing ways later, on the off chance that Elminster gets that lower back thing again or his favorite soaps are on TV and he can't be bothered to save Toril (Elminster: "Nope, sorry, can't do that. Lol, funny, but not as true as i see V_V Maybe cause i have only ever played Dmed Fearun, and its always satisfied my need, But a hilarious post anyway... The worst campaign i ever played in involved the Dm basically giving us the right to loot and pilage and destroy a town without any goal, it bored the hell outta me... |
| a_psh12-01-05, 12:43 AM | Worst setting I've ever played in was actually for a one-shot, I suppose (though I think the DM recycled it for other stuff, too). It had a complex history and everything, and was generally kind of run-of-the-mill generic fantasy, nothing to write home about but not too bad. But it had puns. In the setting. Like entire nations and organizations in the game world would knowingly name themselves with terrible puns. |
| a_psh12-01-05, 12:50 AM | Lol, funny, but not as true as i seeHey, like I said in the original post, this covers some styles of playing FR that, while not ubiquitous, do certainly occur. I dislike the fundamental principles of FR. Good vs. evil, strong divine interventionism, epic-level PCs and NPCs, the big focus on archmages, the explosion of evil kinky Drow, the explosion of rebellious Chaotic Good surface Drow, &c. But it's definitely not an objectively worthless setting. There are good ideas, there are bad ideas, and there are matters of style and theme that no one agrees on. I've read most of the 3e FRCS: it did much to improve the setting, I thought - I came away from it with a feeling of apathy rather than disgust, and there were certainly lots of ideas that I could plunder contained therein. 2e FR, of course, can never be forgiven because of its vile offspring, Maztica. Maztica: its main redeeming quality is that no one ever actually played it. |

Maybe its the fact i havent read any of the novels and make my own ideas up and so have all the other Dms, maybe it helps keep the original ness of the campaign setting, rather then just sticking to trying to tie in high level Nps and Epics already covered in those novels.... Anyway, i didnt think your ideas were wrong, just not in my cases :D hope i didnt bother you |
| a_psh12-01-05, 02:20 AM | hope i didnt bother youNope. Not in the least. Another tale of the vile offspring... The bits of FR in Spelljammer in 2e were particularly awful. Now, because of the context of Spelljammer (giant magical ships in astronomically-large magical space), it's inherently a pretty high-magic game. Still, it was the FR tie-ins that went above and beyond. Toril somehow managed to produce the best of everything: The Imperial Elven Navy, which spanned a lot of different systems but was headquartered on, of course, Evermeet. For defense, the isle was surrounded by a bunch of invisible spheres of annihilation bouncing around high above it. One of the books made reference to a ridiculously-huge elven super ship hidden there, too. Red Wizards created a ship called the Quad of Thay (named for its four-way symmetry), a design that used a unique helm design that allowed it to move about twice as quickly as anything else if you really maxed it out there. The damn thing had no real useful offensive or defensive ability (other than high-level wizards onboard), at least. Even Kara-Tur got into the act. While the Shou just had crappy junks and second-rate battleships prone to gun powder accidents, the humans of Wa created giant centipede vessel things that used a helmsman's ki (rather than arcane power) for propulsion, were tought as heck and armed to the teeth, and weighed in at double the conventional size limit. Then you get the Drow. Jade Spiders and Jade Spider Command Ships. No ranged weapons on these things, but made of pure adamantine, tons and tons and tons of it. Definitely the best armor class of any codified design and, this being 2e, it basically couldn't fail saves. They would ram a target, extend a little cutting mouth thingy, and then fill the enemy ship with these annoying construct/golem things (also called Jade Spiders, inconveniently), which would proceed to murder the far out-classed fleshies that made up the crew of almost any ship. Now, Spelljammer had problems of its own, of course, but... tainted! degraded! brought ever-so-slightly closer to being ruined! |
