Ok so here is the scope: while my character, Tyria (rogue2/druid1/wizard2), and Ember (wizard 5) were making an after hours withdrawal from one of the town's banks, we happened to come across the deed to the city. Not something that either of us could use personally, the druid in the party wants to keep it so he can rule the city (the rest of the party believes that to be tactically unsound), so we decided to sell it.

Well after checking around in Skullport I found a posibble buyer for it, who just happens to be willing to pay 600,000 gp. That works out to roughly 120k between us. Unfortunately this means that if we take the time to go to her, the party ninja's sensei will be lost. (He was fed a plot hook that was basically "the people who kidnapped your sensei are here, but only for a short time".) The deed has a spell on it (Mordenkainen's Beacon?), that whenever it is removed form an extra dimensional space it sets of a magical homing becan. We are also told that its value will drop rapidly over time. This basically leaves us with to chioces each with a dilemma:

1) Do we go after the ninja's sensei and risk getting caught with the deed and/or the deed depreciating in value?
--> If the deed were to fall into the wrong hands we could be killed and/or it could start a civil war.
--> If we go after the sensei, we will have to fight two wormling dragons simultanously. (I pretty sure we can take them)
--> the sensei is being held by Illithids (them I'm not sure about.)

2) If we go for the money, the sensei may die and will surely be moved.
--> Isn't 600k a little much for 5 5th level characters? And should I knowingly let myself become unbalanced beyond belief?
--> But 120k is a lot of money.............

Go for the money. Then get a Locate Person spell cast looking for the Sensai. Use a Mass Teleport to get there...heck you can afford it.

What alignments are you guys?
Me: "?" (that is literally what is on my character sheet) lately though I've been playing NG-NE.
Ember: I believe is NE-NN
The druid: NE
The ninja: I haven't a clue, but if i were to gues it would be NN-NE (he says N"?")
The goliath monk: LN I believe. He is a new addition to the party. I hired him with a ration and got him a job next-dorr to the magic shop we are running. He also does arm wrestling on the side for more money, and basically is the party muscle (with the druid).

How does possesion of the deed give you ownership of a city? I would think that the deed would clearly indicate the true owner/owners and could never be altered without the consent of the listed owners. For the deed of a city this would likely be done with unalterable magic or become worthless if tampered with.

Doesn't make much sense that the city could be lost when a deed was stolen.

Definitely go for the money. Then pay a cleric to Miracle your ninja out of the illithid's hands. Each of you still has 119k+. :king:

The deed would have a name within it somewhere specifying ownership. This entire situation seems wrong, like your DM was bored and thought it would be cool to see you guys run a city or sell one and buy some powerful items instead. Your DM might need to run some pre-made adventures in order to get a more realistic handle on things and see what type of situations to put players in so they don't get bored with the aweful plot. It sounds like your game is getting a little ridiculous.

We do not own the city. The deed is worthless to us in terms of property ownership.

However.

Certain other individuals (rich private collectors, underground thieves' guilds, and politicians) may be willing to pay up to 600k to acquire the deed. What THEY do with it is none of our business (not for 600k gp anyway!).

Reminds me a bit of the deed which starts off the story of the film "Branca Leone" (Vittorio Gassmann starrs as the noble knight, whose adventures always end in catastrophe), which makes the bearer the lord and master of a castle and all villages thereof...they find out when it is too late, that being lord and master there means you also get to hold off the saracen army with 5 men :)
