| Seeking_Knight_of_Graves08-10-06, 04:57 PM | Hello all. I just started a brand new online game and I have a small delimea. I amplaying a Neutral Evil Wizard (Necromancy Specialist). The DM gave me that much money because the other player is roughly level 4. It was to help balance out. What do you all suggest I buy with that much money? Heh I never, ever had that much to ever spend. Thanks in advance. |
| Robert Craven08-10-06, 05:21 PM | Buy a new DM! If he wanted to balance the group, he should have let you start with a level 4 character. 50k is ok for a level 10 character but not for level 1! If you really want to do this: Cloak of Resistance+4 - 16k Headband of Intelect+4 - 16k Ring of Protection+3 - 18k Bracers of armor+4 - 16k Ring of Wizardry I - 20k Ring of Invisibility - 20k Scroll of wish - 28k Spellbooks, scrolls, potions, wands freedom of movement and/or death ward item Or just hire a level 12 wizard to do all the stuff for you! |
| IllyannaFarseer08-10-06, 05:24 PM | bracers of armor. Ring of protection Rod of metamagic (whatever you feel good about) Ioun stones anything to increase int. Scrolls Scrolls and oh yes..more scrolls. Wand of CLW (arcane version, your evil..don't want to depend on some cleric to heal you) Wand of MM (your first level..its nice to have some firepower) Wand of burning hands (in case you run into a lot of dudes) masterwork wand belt Masterwork potion belt. potions to go in said masterwork belt. and if you have any money left over...get yourself a nice enchanted weapon that does extra damage...like a flaming spear, or flaming xbow, or shocking, etc...that way if you ever run out of spells and don't want to use a wand up, you can stab em for X+D6 and still contribute to the total damage output of the party. If there is no limit on ammount spent on an item, you can blow through 50K of gold QUICK! ( I think a single AC6 set of bracers is 36K itself?) |
| Archmage Atrus08-10-06, 05:34 PM | Seriously. Don't do it. Tell your DM to just start you up at an appropriate ECL and give you appropriate treasure. By the sound of it, I doubt you'll enjoy the game much. Of course, I'm assuming that "Bad DM" == "Non-enjoyment of Game." I could be wrong. You could be into that sort of thing. |
| Palladium08-10-06, 05:58 PM | Hi, all. How about a: Wand of fireball (level 10), 22500, Boots of Levitation, 7500, Ring of invisibility 20000? Exactly 50000. Invisible death from above. This will guarantee you'll also be 4th level very soon. :D : Palladium : |
| Darkuwa08-10-06, 06:26 PM | +2 defending/+2 defending Quartserstaff. |
| Harrowdroth08-10-06, 06:51 PM | you should "normaly" start at 4th level just like everybody else, and get 5400gp like the DMG says, Differences from making 1st level characters: No rolling for starting gold. 2nd 900 3rd 2,700 4th 5,400 It goes on! Purchasing magic items: A player may only buy a single magic item of up to 1/4 of his/her total starting gold. Realy, Did your DM ever read the DMG EVER!!! Because a 4th level character shouldn't Have 50K!!! However it is his problem, [Maniacal laughter] Way I see it you got a few options 1: Take it and run!!! the idiot is letting you have 50k!!! 2: Present an argument to him/her/it, about the gold(Why try),and more importantly your character level. using the rulebooks as your ammo,DMG Page 135, Table 5-1 Character wealth by level, and tell him/her/it that A: "Look, My character can't start out at this level and survive adventuring with a group of 4th level characters, Can I start at the same level as them, Please?" Be sincere, courteous and respectful to him/her/it when making an apeal. B: (only about the gold) "Hey the Dungeon masters guide say's that I should be 4th level just like the rest of the group, and we should all get 5400gp, really the Dmg Insinuates/Say's it is unbalancing." remember the respect thing. C: "Can I try DMing a Module with you as a player" This probably won't work but try it, Pelor knows? it might work. Also talk with the other players and find out what they think of the "DM's" Treasure allowances. Try to memorize the lines, then use them. Read the Core Rulebooks, Put a bookmark on the pages with the info for your argument. Be nice during the conversation with the DM, I mean He/She/It might not know anything is amiss here. Harrowdroth. PS: any good DM abreviations you can think of? |
| Radijs08-10-06, 07:30 PM | I agree with Harrowdroth. Get the DM to start you as a lvl 4 character like the rest of the party. Otherwise I'd buy: 1 ring of wizardry I for 20.000 GP (Doubles the amount of lvl 1 spells. You'll need it.) bracers of armor +3 for 9.000 (+3 AC) and a Headband of intellect +4 for 16.000 (+4 on intelligence increases the DC's for your spells and also gets you more bonus spells) And for the finishing touch a ring of protection +1 for 2.000 (another +1 AC) This leaves you with 3.000 gp for which I recommend a wand of magic missile caster level 3 (2 missiles) which costs 2.250 leaving you with 750 GP for potions and cheaper items. |
| Seeking_Knight_of_Graves08-10-06, 08:29 PM | Hehehe...maybe I should have been a tad more clear. I chose to be first level. I could have went to fourth level or picked a monster class with a LA of +4 but I wanted to go for starting at level one. And I could be wrong. it could be 5k of stuff. Either way I did have the options but I wanted to raise my char up from level one on. Thanks for the advice though all. ^_^ Peace. P.S. Oh Yeah. it is just me and one other guy. He is a Lawful Neutral Archon or something. I believe he is a Fighter. And the DM has a great magic scroll that rezz's people. A nice 500 gp a pop but well worth it. There are three levels for it. So I can buy the lowest one and maybe later learn the spell. WOOOOOOOOO |
| IceFractal08-10-06, 08:41 PM | 5k versus 50k is a pretty big difference! If you're choosing to start at 1st level, then having a huge amount of money may actually be a (relatively) good way to even the balance - since your HP is going to be terrible, make sure to buy plenty of healing potions and defensive items (Bracers of Armor, Cloak of Lesser Displacement, Cloak of Resistance, etc). Actually, since you're a necromancer - buy a couple wands of Animate Dead and Summon Undead. You can control a single 4 HD undead, which should be strong enough to be a pretty decent bodyguard, if you pick it well. And if it does get destroyed, you can summon some more to safeguard your retreat. Alternatively, buy a scroll of Create Greater Undead and a scroll of Control Undead. Make a Wraith or Spectre, control it, and order it to kill you, turning you into a spawn, and then release you from control. You might lose all your class levels, but there's only one, so no big loss - you can always resume your study of necromancy after coming back. Now you're incorporeal, and should have a pretty easy time surviving to level 4 and beyond. On second thought, you probably shouldn't do this. You'd hardly be starting from first level then anyway, what with the hit dice and all. And the rest of the group may throw dice at you. |
| utilitarian08-10-06, 08:56 PM | 5k: Get some bracers of armor and maybe an amulet of natural armor, plus perhaps a wand of some kind. 50k: Pick up a DMG, smack your DM, in the face, preferrably corner first. I'm sick of hearing about so many DMs running these ridiculous monty haul games. And where do EITHER of you get off with compensating gold for xp? Not only is that dumb, it's also ridiculous from the point of view of the campaign. Ideally you want your party to be as close to eachother in level as possible, else it becomes an absolute nightmare for encounter planning. Le sigh. |

But the scrolls thing is a good idea. Hell the get turned into a wraith is good too. Would be very interesting to do so. Nice thing is the DM is running the world like you can do your own destiny. Kinda like Morrowwind. Anywho thanks again for the advice all. I am going to make sure which it is 50 or 5k. P.S. Honestly my Dm is not running a onty haul game. I chose to be 1st level. I want to improve my character from the ground up. DM is being great for allowing it and he has a house rule where I get a new attribute point every three level. Oh yeah my stats are Str 11; Dex 11; Sta 12; Wis 12; Cha 15; Int 17. So if I have it all planned out by level 15 my cha will be 18 and my int will be 19. Though I do not know what feats to pick out. Skills i know but i want to have the ride skill as a class skill. I have a book of feats that has a 1st level feat that gives the ride skill but i have to pass it by my DM. Oh yeah since this is online it will be hard to hit him on the head when he is hundreds of miles away. Edit: Ok. I talked to my fellow player and it is 5,000. My bad all for making that big of a mistake. |

For the record though, had you been starting with 50k in items the game would have, by definition, been a monty haul game. That's the defintiion of the term, a game in which the players are given an enourmous amount of wealth by the DM (far more than they should have at thier appropreate character levels). |
| Palomides08-11-06, 05:12 PM | - Blessed Book : 12500 gp (will save you money in the future) - Amulet of Health +6 : 36000 gp (good for concentration and hp) - Cloak of Resistance +1 : 1000 gp Buy spells/scrolls with the remaining 500 gp. |
| rogue_lettuce08-11-06, 05:41 PM | When someone compared 42 point buy to giving 50k to a 1st level character in the "2 questions about rolling abilities" thread, they didn't mean it literally. |
| PhaedrusXY08-11-06, 10:51 PM | A scroll or two of Animate Dead would be a good investment, though. The caster level would be based off the scroll, not your caster level. So you'd be able to animate and control two 14 HD undead with one scroll, if you use it in a Desecrated area. That should help you level up quite fast. :D Scrolls of Command Undead would be a good investment, also. Heck, with a wizard, you should spend most of his money on scrolls so you can fill up his spellbook, anyway. |
| Seeking_Knight_of_Graves08-12-06, 12:11 PM | Thanks guys. I am more then likely gonna buy a bunch of scrolls. And since I am gonna have a Lawful Neutral Half-Celestial Fighter as a partner things should go well. If I can ask for a little more help. I am trying to pick some good feats. Now I am thinking Tomb-Tainted Soul from Libris Motrus as my 1st level feat and for my free human feat I may pick Gentry. This feat allows me to have Ride and Diplomacy as class skills. The basis of it is that I was raised in a high class family. That is it. No extra money or anything. What do you all think. Thanks |

It is a sorcerer-like base class that slowly turns you into a lich. His Charnel Touch (deals negative energy damage that heals undead) should work great with tomb-tainted soul. |
| Seeking_Knight_of_Graves08-12-06, 01:32 PM | Ok. I just do not have that particualy book. THough i am not so much into a sorcerer type class only because of the lack of spells. But I will go have a hunt for the book. Thanks |
| utilitarian08-12-06, 01:36 PM | Ok. I just do not have that particualy book. THough i am not so much into a sorcerer type class only because of the lack of spells. But I will go have a hunt for the book. Thanks Pale Master is always a good PrC choice if you want an arcane based Necromancer. True Necromancer is where a lot of the power is but you need divine and arcane for that one. If you have Tome of Magic Tenebreous Apostate can let you do sick sick things with undead thanks to Tenebreous's 1/5 rounds infinite turning. |
| Harrowdroth08-12-06, 02:47 PM | Good to hear it's only 5K. For feats I recomend: Collegiate wizard [general] You have undergone extensive training in a formal school For wizards. Prerequisites: Int13, Wizard level 1st Benefit: You begin play with Knowledge of six first level spells Plus one per point of intelligence modifier. Each time you gain a Wizard level, you may add four spells to your spell book without Any additional Research. In addition, you gain a +2 on all knowledge (arcana) checks. Normal: 1st-level wizards begin play with knowledge of three 1st level spells, and add two spells per level to their spellbook Special: You can only take this spell at 1st-level. This is a WOTC official feat. |
| Seeking_Knight_of_Graves08-12-06, 09:21 PM | Super to hear about that feat. Though I am curous on where you got it from. My DM may ask about it. As for prestige classes and multiclassing. I really do not know what to do. Being a Binder from Tome Of Magic and getting some nice things there or going cleric to be a true necro or just sticking with a necromancer. I have heard that the class it self is like 6 levels or something. So i dunno what to do. Advice is welcome. peace |

| Seeking_Knight_of_Graves08-17-06, 08:44 PM | Ok all. After chatting with my dm i got the following things. A +1 Quarterstaff of Major Intensity. (Intense is like Keen but only for bludgeoning weapons. And the Dm has three levels of it so I picked the highest so my crit threat on the staff is 17-20). I also bought a Masterwork Serrated Dagger. (Serration cause 1 point of damaage because of the little teeth on the blade at a lose of 5 points of hardness.) I also have a +2 Dagger of Spawning. (Spawning is anyone whom I kill with the dagger becomes a zombie under my control for 10 minutes. After that time the zombie goes back to being a dead body. Zombie can be turned, rebuked, ect as normal.) Now I bought a scroll with six uses of the DM's person full rezz spell. So I can rezz my teammate a good 6 times to full health. I am also going to buy a Bracer of Armour +1. All this should leave me close to 1800 left in gold. Now I need to buy my equipment and I am gonna ask for a bigger spell book. OH yeah I am also gonna buy a wand or two. Thing is the DM told me that the fights we are going to get into are gonna be tough. Since there is myseld and my half celestial teammate we may be facing things with a CR of 6. Like say a 6th level paladin. I am wondering what you all think is a 1st level necro and a 1 Ranger/ 2 Fighter Half Celestal take on a CR 6 "Boss" moster. Thanks in advance |
| Robert Craven08-18-06, 05:09 AM | I am wondering what you all think is a 1st level necro and a 1 Ranger/ 2 Fighter Half Celestal take on a CR 6 "Boss" moster. Thanks in advance No! You will have like 6hp and an AC of around 13. The paladin will have an attack bonus of at least 9 (BAB +6, STR +2, Weapon +1). And you are evil. Any paladin should go against you first (and use smite evil too). |
| Judging Eagle08-18-06, 08:24 AM | Intense is really a new way of defining the Impact weapon ability. The idea of increasing and/or stacking weapon enchancments has been talked about in the past (conclusion: you can't have a double flaming sword, flaming and flaming burst together is possible since they're different enchancements). Serrated knives wouldn't lose any hardness, really, they'd have lost hit points. Hardness of an object is never reduced (unless, and only if the item becomes 'softer'), only hitpoints are. Also, getting a crossbow might really be your best bet. Staying out of the fight is the only thing to do early on, if you take soem sort of fighter/rogue training, maybe using a weapon to close-in might be okay. I've never played a wizard that enjoyed taking his unarmoured, un-fit for melee combat, self all the way into a brawl. It's the fighter's job to co-ordinate and the barbarian's job to rush into a melee. |
| WhiteRaven81008-18-06, 08:46 AM | Yea your going to want to start at the fourth level because you party will be anywhere from 40 to 60 HP by now, and you'll have 4 plus your Constitution modifier. Anyways, with 50,000 gold coins I'd buy every 1st level Wizard spell in every book there is. plus a ring of Wizardy 1, mithril buckler (no armor check penalty, though you'll have to take a feat to use the sheild). Which reminds me, see how your Dungeon Master feels about buying feats. I allow one 'bought' feat per character level, following the bellow formula. . . General Feats 50 + 200 x BAB requirement + 150 x ability score modifier + 50 x required skill rank = price (minium 150 in the event of feats lacking prerequiste). I have a differnt forumla for Divine, Wild, Item Creation, Hertiage, Metamagic, and Cermony feats, but most of them contain giving up XP rather then gold and I'm too lazy to fetch my note book. Though if anybody wants them message me and I'll gladly share. |
