| BreegJac1702-11-07, 10:59 AM | Could anybody please suggest some good feats for a generic 1st level wizard. Any help would be appreciated. |
| Lawz42002-11-07, 11:02 AM | toughness |
| CantripN02-11-07, 11:12 AM | Wizards aren't Generic, for starters... Anyhow, seeing as you should aim for a PrC, choose feats accordingly. Probably a Metamagic feat or Combat Casting at those levels. |
| BreegJac1702-11-07, 11:14 AM | Thanks for the suggestions. Though more would be helpful too. |
| CantripN02-11-07, 11:36 AM | As I said, plan ahead. What are you going for, eventually? Unlimited spells a day - Ultimate Magus. - Needs a Metamagic Feat, and prob. Practiced Spellcaster. Specialist Wizard - Master Specialist. - Needs School Focus. Also, look at the spells you'll be using to pick your feats. Most Wizards find Extend Spell to be vastly useful, but mine doesn't, for instance... I'm always in favor of getting Sculpt Spell eventually. |
| Keiichi_m02-11-07, 12:28 PM | Unarmed strike or two weapon fighting and take a quarterstaff... you never know when you may be thrust into melee with nothing but a stick, or even just your fists. also speaking of melee, combat casting is a good one. |
| FrostWolf02-11-07, 12:29 PM | Exotic weapon focus: Alchemy blade. And later on, Improved familiar. A Warg, Hell Hound, or Blink dog beats the heck out of a toad any day. Hedgehog is a good Familiar if you don't want Improved Familiar. It gives you +1 natural armor. Combat casting. would be your best bet. Light Armor Prof, If you can get Mithril armor enchanted with Twilight at some point. Maybe. Keep it in mind for later. Sleeping time now. |
| Vanadium02-11-07, 12:46 PM | Now, I'm going to have to disagree with almost everyone here. Toughness does nothing for you. You might have only a few hitpoints now, and quite frankly an extra 3 probably won't make the greatest difference in the long-run. Combat Casting is a trap. Take it only as a pre-requisite to prestige classes. If you want to be good at casting and concentrating, Skill Focus: Concentration is so much better its not even funny. The SF will apply whenever you need to concentrate, not just when you are defensively casting. If you fear casting defensively, make good friends with the party tank. Have him stand between you and the things that wish to eat you. At higher levels, you can simply climb up the walls (spider climb) or do other things to get out of melee range, but for now just stand back. The improved familiar feats are most often just wastes. Spell Focuses are okay in Core, and they often act as pre-requisites for prestige classes. You are a Wizard. You don't need to shore up weaknesses like lack of melee prowess. You should be emphasizing your strengths, especially at low levels. Improved Initiative is very good for a Wizard at low levels. Going first can mean the difference between getting smacked by the Barbarian and color spraying said Barbarian. Metamagic and Item Creation feats are good, but they also require you to be a little higher leveled. Item Creation too might be less usable depending upon the DM. That said, your feats should go towards pre-requisties for good prestige classes. Even if you are playing Core, there is the Loremaster and Archmage. Beyond Core, you have your Initiate of the Sevenfold Veils, Incantatrixes, and a whole slew of other good choices. Most of those have feat requirements. At low levels, your best bet is in spell choice. Don't bother with direct damage spells for a while. Magic Missile at level 1-3 is more or less 'Remove one Kobold from the map'. Color Spray and Sleep at levels 1-3 are 'Next combat, please'. Looking at your signature, I see you enjoy Forgotten Realms. Is this character in FR? If so, go Incantatrix. You have no reason not to. |
| Keiichi_m02-11-07, 01:00 PM | Toughness does nothing for you. You might have only a few hitpoints now, and quite frankly an extra 3 probably won't make the greatest difference in the long-run. It does though, it really really does. it's the difference between taking 1 hit and dropping and taking 2... even 3 if you're lucky. Combat Casting is a trap. Take it only as a pre-requisite to prestige classes. If you want to be good at casting and concentrating, Skill Focus: Concentration is so much better its not even funny. The SF will apply whenever you need to concentrate, not just when you are defensively casting. you make a good point The improved familiar feats are most often just wastes. agreed, just stick with a toad or something, nothing says awesome like +2 con to give you a better run for your money, picks up on fort and hp, something the wizard lacks in. You are a Wizard. You don't need to shore up weaknesses like lack of melee prowess. You should be emphasizing your strengths, especially at low levels. I disagree here, at the lower levels the wizard is just one big weakness, with one strength, and gets good about 3-5th level, but man 4 HP and no armor is a handy cap some days. most wizards don't make it past level 1 unless they're A) really powerful B) in a good adventuring party (Read: A PC) When a house cat can kill you, there's an issue. Improved Initiative is very good for a Wizard at low levels. Going first can mean the difference between getting smacked by the Barbarian and color spraying said Barbarian. Agreed |
| BreegJac1702-11-07, 01:05 PM | Thanks :D |
| Vanadium02-11-07, 01:26 PM | It does though, it really really does. it's the difference between taking 1 hit and dropping and taking 2... even 3 if you're lucky. Then again, if you are in a position to be hit, you messed up. Unless the DM is a fan of the 'Rogue shivs the Wizard' tactic, you should be able to avoid melee combat. Ranged combat can be avoided by something as easy as Obscuring Mist. At the same time, if you are starting a Wizard, you should have about 5-6 hitpoints (depending on rolling methods) as there is no excuse to not have your second-highest attribute be CON. Sure, you are within 1 hit of being dropped, but most people at that level are. agreed, just stick with a toad or something, nothing says awesome like +2 con to give you a better run for your money, picks up on fort and hp, something the wizard lacks in. This depends on the edition he's playing. Toads in 3.5 just give 3 hit points. That said, your second-best ability score should be in Con anyways. I disagree here, at the lower levels the wizard is just one big weakness, with one strength, and gets good about 3-5th level, but man 4 HP and no armor is a handy cap some days. most wizards don't make it past level 1 unless they're A) really powerful B) in a good adventuring party (Read: A PC) At low levels, everybody has the fundamental wizard problem: low hitpoints and low AC. Now, the Wizard has lower AC and Hitpoints, but the fact of the matter is low levels are all about luck. The Wizard is spared somewhat by not running up and engaging the enemies, like a Rogue (with low HP and AC). It seems odd to spend feats to help with this, seeing as melee combat is a place you don't want to be. If you cast all your spells, whip out alchemical items, scrolls, or even act as the world's worst crossbowman. Just don't engage the enemies on their terms. The fighter with 15 hitpoints and 20 AC can be knocked down by a lucky hit, depending on the dice. Sure, it requires less luck to down the Wizard, but your primary attribute is intelligence. They should be able to use some in combat. Tactics can go a long way at lower levels (high levels, too). I still firmly believe that your spell choices at low levels are the most important. Your spells should either be 'save or dies' (which sleep and color spray more or less are at low levels) or augment the fighter, who can dish it out now (enlarge person is a good thing). |
| Real_iceman02-11-07, 02:08 PM | I would recomand spell penetration,,,,,, By the way my curent character is a evocer, do you think this was a good choice of feats? spell focus (evocation),spell focus (illusion),firy burst and spell penetration. |
| RellenMarn02-11-07, 03:09 PM | An Evoker, hmmm. Spell Penetration, for a level 1 Wizard??? I am going to second improved initiative, unless you are planning to use Summon Monster extensively, in which case Spell Focus Conjuration and Augment Summoning are very nice. I would leave tiughness alone unless it is a prerequisite for a PRC, it becomes nigh on useless at higher levels, and is not a prerquisite for the much better feat Improved Toughness (unless that has been erratered?). Just be careful with your precious hide, make use of scribe scroll to give yourself extra spells if possible. Consider starting as a Specialist, that extra spell can make a big difference at lower levels. A shield can be worth your while at level 1, drop it as a free action before spellcasting, and enjoy that + 2 to AC. It might even be worth in wearing armor for a few levels, especially if you can pick spells without somantic components, e.g, True Strike. Good luck! |
| CantripN02-11-07, 03:39 PM | I would recomand spell penetration,,,,,, By the way my curent character is a evocer, do you think this was a good choice of feats? spell focus (evocation),spell focus (illusion),firy burst and spell penetration. Why SF (Illusion)? You could've just taken Empower or something... Even if you can't use it yet, it's a crying shame to have SF (Illusion) as an Evoker. You're better off with Energy Substitution or something, rather than pointless illusions... |
| AlanBruce02-11-07, 04:18 PM | A shield can be worth your while at level 1, drop it as a free action before spellcasting, and enjoy that + 2 to AC. It might even be worth in wearing armor for a few levels, especially if you can pick spells without somantic components, e.g, True Strike. QUOTE] Be careful with that strategy. Dropping a shield is a move action, not free. You could, of course, benefit from the shield, but if you have an opponent close to you or one with reach, the whole shield dropping tactic will result in a quick death for your wizard since you won't be able to go anywhere after that magic missile has been cast! |
| kelvinaw27302-11-07, 04:48 PM | I would say the besttwo feats you can take to start with are Skill Focus: Concentration and Improved Initiative. For skills, max out in Concentration and Spellcraft, then knowledge skills. For weapons, I suggest taking a light crossbow, failing that throwing knives. Staffs might look wizardly but if you get into melee you have already done something wrong. |
| Tyler Do'Urden02-11-07, 04:58 PM | Scribe Scroll. |
| CantripN02-11-07, 05:57 PM | Scribe Scroll. Tyler? Are you okay? Tired, maybe? Wizards get Scribe Scroll for free at 1st level. |
| Sir_Wolfgar02-11-07, 06:03 PM | If you are playing Forgotten Realms, there are 2 great feats for a wizard in the campaign setting book, both of which can only be taken at 1st level. Mind Over Body- allows you to add your INT mod to you hp instead of you CON mod at 1st level. It also gives you +1 hp every time you take a metamagic feat. Education- All knowledge skills are class skills, and you get +2 bonus on two knowledge skills of your choice. |
| OrionNo902-11-07, 06:22 PM | Well, when the wizard I am playing was at first level, he had two feats (BTW: he is a human) and I made both of them toughness. Starting a campaign with a wizard who had 12 HP was nice, and keep me from worrying about an arrow in a surprise round dropping my wizard. Now these feats because unless quickly but the PHB II has rules on retrain your feats my wizard begin retraining those two feats rather quickly. So if your DM allows retaining take Toughness, but if you are going to be stuck with that choose you can choose something better. |
| RellenMarn02-11-07, 06:25 PM | QUOTE: Be careful with that strategy. Dropping a shield is a move action, not free. END QUOTE. Page 139 of the Player's handbook says, under free actions, that dropping an object is a free action. Is there something that tells us this is not the case for shields? I would not be surprised, but I have not seen it if there is. |
| RellenMarn02-11-07, 06:28 PM | Yes toughness does become much more viable if your DM allows retraining, but I have yet to play with one who does. |
| stargate52502-11-07, 06:31 PM | Page 139 of the Player's handbook says, under free actions, that dropping an object is a free action. Is there something that tells us this is not the case for shields? I would not be surprised, but I have not seen it if there is. Loosing a shield (removing it from the arm and dropping it) is only a move action. There ya go. |
| DrMorganes02-11-07, 06:41 PM | Re: dropping a shield: Heavier shields are actually strapped to the arm. Smaller units, like bucklers, are merely held. Stands to reason that dropping a buckler or small shield could be done as a free action, while undoing those pesky arm straps on medium and larger shields would require a move action. Heck, a buckler is a decent choice for a low-level wizard anyway. +1 AC for a 5% ASF. Get a mithril version as soon as you can to eliminate ASF entirely. Said shield may be enchanted for additional protection down the road... |

| Hack and Smasher02-11-07, 07:00 PM | I offer good simple advice. 1. Don't do damage. Strange as it might sound as a wizard for the first couple of level you really should avoid dealing damage since you have save or nap spells. Sleeping monsters don't fight back. Good spells: Sleep or Colour Spray 2. Don't look like a wizard. You know what sucks having everything with and int higher than 8 target you first because your a wizard and can blow them up (the fact cant' makes things worse) so dress like everyone else and avoid bright colours and staffs what you want is a dagger and/or club and if you can afford it a crossbow. 3. You are squishy therefore don't go near anything if you can avoid it, running away and screaming like a girl is a vaild tactic. 4. Picking your speices: Ok important stuff now it comes down to 4 choices here Gnome (con is your friend and +1 on illusion DCs is good too), Halfing (small size +dex bonus equals some ac goodness), Human (bonus feat), Elf (squishy but gives bow and sword prof) |
| Tyler Do'Urden02-11-07, 07:42 PM | Tyler? Are you okay? Tired, maybe? Wizards get Scribe Scroll for free at 1st level.Oh yeah, you're right. My bad. How about Summon Familiar? That's a good feat. |
| Tenebrous_Sage02-11-07, 07:52 PM | toughnessUmmm... No, just no Unarmed strike or two weapon fighting and take a quarterstaff... you never know when you may be thrust into melee with nothing but a stick, or even just your fists. also speaking of melee, combat casting is a good one. Exotic weapon focus: Alchemy blade. They're only issues if the wizard is unlucky, poorly played, or has no support from the other players. I would recomand spell penetration,,,,,, By the way my curent character is a evocer, do you think this was a good choice of feats? spell focus (evocation),spell focus (illusion),firy burst and spell penetration.Arcane Mastery, from CAr, is better. Mind Over Body- allows you to add your INT mod to you hp instead of you CON mod at 1st level. It also gives you +1 hp every time you take a metamagic feat. While somewhat better, this feat has the same problem toughness does. It won't scale enough to be worth it. Education- All knowledge skills are class skills, and you get +2 bonus on two knowledge skills of your choice. For a wizard!? Why, they already have all knowledge skills as class skills, and the +2 bonus isn't worth a feat, especially considering a Wizard's high INT. |
| Secrets Untold02-11-07, 08:17 PM | Oh yeah, you're right. My bad. How about Summon Familiar? That's a good feat. Wow, Tyler. That must have been some party, eh? Summon Familiar is a free class ability to wizards. It's also *not* a feat. Maybe you should just lay down for a bit... Also, I see no problem taking Spell Focus (Illusion) w/ an Evoker. I routinely take Spell Focus Evocation or Transmutation with an Illusionist. Illusions are great complements to any caster. |
| InterSilva02-11-07, 08:32 PM | I'm a big fan of Collegiate Wizard from Complete Arcane (pg. 181). Precocious Apprentice isn't bad, either. |
| High Octane02-11-07, 10:41 PM | Tyler? Are you okay? Tired, maybe? Wizards get Scribe Scroll for free at 1st level. S'alright. Tyler's sarcasm is so thick it can look a lot like sincerety. Anyway, first tell us what you are planning to do at later levels. I would recommend point blank shot and precise shot if you plan on being a shooter. (applies to rays and orb spells). You can never go wrong with spell focus in your favorite school (unless you dont plan on having a lot of saving throws involved, like in conjuration, but in that case you may want augment summoning) Complete mage has a whole slew of feats that help if you are a specialist. |
| Sinis02-11-07, 11:32 PM | There are a lot of feats that lose their lustre after a number of levels. Combat casting is one of them (sooner or later, it becomes quite trivial to cast things defensively). Similarly, Toughness feels like a wasted feat later, as you develop more and more reliable ways of avoiding damage. My favourite picks of feats that are good from the start and never expire are: Improved Initiative, Spell Penetration and Spell Focus. Feats that aren't so hot now, but will be good later (again, IMO) are: Great Fortitude, Eschew Materials, Improved Counterspell. Those are my all time faves, in terms of shoring up wizard weaknesses, and feats that strongly benefit the wizard class. |
| Elsydeon02-12-07, 01:56 AM | My reccomendations: Skills: I like Autohypnosis. Whether your DM will allow you to memorize your spellbook (magical script, you could convert to something else as a workaround) or not is really beside the point. It's a handy skill for a Wizard even without that. Though personally, I think the workaround is valid if nothing else. Many DM's won't bother worrying about it, since they don't like the kryptonite-esque weakness of a lost spellbook completely taking you out of the action. Feats: People seem to say that the focus feats don't shine until later. Honestly, they shine right off the bat. Penetration is a bad level 1 choice, because if you're fighting something with spell resistance your whole party is dead anyway. But those little DC boosts are great even at low levels. And anything that builds towards a strong prestige class is an obvious pick. You could always make a red wizard transmuter and turn the world into statues. ;) Improved Initiative is great for anyone. If you're optimizing, your picks are entirely based on your prestige class. |
| Tenebrous_Sage02-12-07, 02:19 AM | The focus feats are okay, but even at later levels there are better things to have, unless you're a specialist in a save Dependant school (i.e. Enchantment, Illusion, Necromancy). Arcane Mastery is much better than Spell Penetration (especially when combined with Assay Resistance) |
| Elsydeon02-12-07, 03:03 AM | Can't say I know those from experience. Save schools are the best ones. They're tide-turners. Anyway, aside from buffs every school is DC dependent to an extent... I mean, even evocation is a save dependent school. Your damage is more reliable with a higher DC. |
| Sigst02-12-07, 03:51 AM | Does your DM allow the retraining option of the Players Handbook II? If he does you can swap out a feat, up to 4 skill points, or some other class feature every time you level up. If retraining is allowed, toughness is a pretty decent feat at first level unless you have a really high constitution score. At low levels three extra hp mean a lot, and when they become less important you can trade it in for something else. Otherwise the best feat choice is really campaign specific. If your DM loves sending you out on ships to battle against sea monsters who always sink the ship you are on, then you really ought to know how to swim, and a low strength wizard may not be able to just "take 10" on swim checks and expect to remain afloat. In these cases the feats "athletic" or "skill focus (swim)" may be for you so that you don't need to buy swim ranks cross-class. If your DM loves to pit you against big and powerful monsters where you constantly need to run away from enemies then of course take "run". For the generic case though, skill focus (concentration) is pretty decent. Sig |
| bob_the_great02-12-07, 07:52 AM | I agree that you need to ask yourself what you (generally) want to do over the life of your character before you choose your level 1 feat. it sucks to take a feat early on only to find out that you aren't benefitting from it because you've changed strategies. Also, if you want to take a prestige class you might need to start taking the feat prerequisites right away. I am not a fan of feats like toughness or any feat aimed to make you better at (non-magical) combat. Those are fixes for temporary weaknesses. Accept the initial weakness. Early on your job is to use your sleep or color spray spells and then simply survive. If you have the choice between firing a crossbow or guaranteeing your safety you should drop that crossbow and run. I don't use the complete series so from PHB you are best off with feats like improved initiative or spell focus (maybe even great fortitude because I hate failing saves) if you want feats that help now and later or feats like spell penetration or metamagic feats if you don't mind taking feats which do nothing for you now but help later. If you have access to complete arcane i'd suggest you look through that book but approach it the same way: prioritize any feats which get you to where your character wants to be (PrCs), followed by either feats which will be useful later or feats which will be useful both now and later. Be wary of feats which compensate for temporary weaknesses. |
| Gandrel02-12-07, 08:26 AM | For first level feats I always choose improved initiative and spellcasting prodigy. |
| nephsytis02-12-07, 08:29 AM | i'm gunna assume when the OP said "generic wizard" he meant core only. feats i would suggest (most of these aren't real big helps at level one, but by level 3 should have helped out) worried about combat: combat expertise: though it takes a long time for you to get +5 on attack rolls, can be a good way of buffing ac dodge for +1 ac, may keep you out of the grapple skill focus: concentration metamagic still spell - for grappling wanting more power in your spells: spell focus: in the save dependant ones wanting to have fun: metamagic silent in conjunction with prestidigitation and the overall best first level feat for a spellcaster: Improved initative. |
| BreegJac1702-12-07, 11:00 AM | If this helps here are his stats: STR=12 :) DEX=14 :) CON=17 :D INT=18 :D WIS=16 :) CHA=16 :) ( I wish i could roll like this more often) (It's my Brother's Char.) |
| Sigst02-12-07, 11:03 AM | OK, with a CON=17 there is no need for any toughness feat... |
| mkill02-12-07, 11:17 AM | worried about combat: combat expertise: though it takes a long time for you to get +5 on attack rolls, can be a good way of buffing ac No it's not! Not only does your base attack bonus as a wizard suck, you don't benefit from the feat at all when you cast spells! Quote SRD: When you use the attack action or the full attack action in melee, you can take a penalty of as much as -5 on your attack roll and add the same number (+5 or less) as a dodge bonus to your Armor Class. This number may not exceed your base attack bonus. The changes to attack rolls and Armor Class last until your next action. Sorry, but if you get caught in melee as a wizard, you try to get out of there with a five-foot step and either get a spell off, discharge a wand or run! You don't start attacking people. So you never get to benefit from Combat Expertise. dodge for +1 ac, may keep you out of the grapple mildly useful. metamagic still spell - for grappling I don't know how often wizards get grappled in your campaign... I wonder why that one was never mentioned, but my elven wizard with a +3 dex got himself Weapon Finesse at 3rd level. Note necessary, but quite handy for touch spells. |
| Tyler Do'Urden02-12-07, 11:19 AM | S'alright. Tyler's sarcasm is so thick it can look a lot like sincerety. Yeah, I love how it's obvious enough that I'd be stupid not to know, but not so obvious that they don't just assume I know and I'm being silly. A wizard's feats, especially at 1st level, aren't very important. It's his spells that make him unique and powerful. Pick one general thing you want to be good at and take a feat that supports it. Not dying? Toughness. Not going last. Improved Initiative. Actually hitting with rays once in a while. Point Blank Shot. Plus with PHB II retraining rules, even it you "waste" a feat on something like Simple Weapon Proficiency or Athletic, you can swap it later on for something better. |
| BreegJac1702-12-07, 11:30 AM | Thanks , you've all been a great help. |
| nephsytis02-12-07, 11:48 AM | Mkill: you are completely right. i joined with my wizy at 10th level and went the palemaster progression... i was trying to think up feats that would benefit a level one character after most of the suggestive posts were placing combat orientated ones.... now taht ive explained myself, i'll retract all silly advice and stand by imp. init. |
| Tusalu02-12-07, 11:52 AM | Combat casting is good, although in higher levels it become useless. Dodge can be good too, like toughness it makes you live longer, unlike toughness itīs not useless later on. |
| Tusalu02-12-07, 11:53 AM | Improved initiative is good too. My wizard has won many initiatives so he could cast fireball while the enemy are grouped. |
| Elsydeon02-12-07, 01:35 PM | I love high int and con. You've got a good setup for the wizard there. |
| WhiteRaven81002-12-07, 04:30 PM | Collegiate Wizard from Complete Arcane doubles the number of "free and indepent research" spells in your grimmore. |
| Findail02-13-07, 08:59 AM | I'd be inclined to go for those feats that can only be taken as a 1st level character: because you'll never get the chance to take those again. Things like Spellcasting Prodigy, Collegiate Wizard, Luck of Heroes. Improved Initiative is good, but you could maybe wait until 3rd to take it. |
| mkill02-13-07, 10:24 AM | Collegiate Wizard from Complete Arcane doubles the number of "free and indepent research" spells in your grimmore. So that's two spells per level, or three for an elven substitution level wizard... If you ask me, not worth it. How much are spell scrolls? If you are in a campaign where the DM keeps wealth extremely low and all spellbooks of dead mages turn to dust upon touch, and nobody ever sells any scrolls, the feat might be worth it. In any other campaign... forget it. |

Things like Spellcasting Prodigy, Collegiate Wizard, Luck of Heroes. Improved Initiative is good, but you could maybe wait until 3rd to take it. in what books are they ? |

With your stats i'd go gray elf with the generalist wizard substitution level from races of the wild (1st level only). Feats would be collegiate mage from complete arcane and allacratous cogitation (sic) from complete mage. |
