| crazysamaritan11-24-06, 12:25 AM | Thrice-damn it, again!!! They're STILL disguising the Errata as a Frequently Asked Question entry!!! The most recent example of the 'errata': Can a monk get her unarmed strike enhanced as a magic weapon? No. Even a magic gauntlet or spiked gauntlet isn’t the ideal answer, since these aren’t listed as special monk weapons (and therefore aren’t as versatile as unarmed strikes). The amulet of mighty fists (Dungeon Master’s Guide, 246) grants the wearer an enhancement bonus on unarmed and natural weapon attacks, which would include the monk’s unarmed strike. A direct contradiction of the written information on the monk's unarmed strikes. It's also against the spirit of a previous ruling on his behalf, that a monk cannot use the feat Improved Natural Attack for his unarmed strike. Apparently it's not natural OR manufactured!!!! Or from a later entry; Of course, a character wielding a weapon in that hand could activate the ring after making his attacks for the round (thus gaining its benefit while enemies attack) and deactivate it at the start of his next turn (allowing attacks with that hand). While you wouldn’t be able to use the shield hand to make attacks of opportunity while the shield was active, you’d otherwise be nearly as effectively protected as if the shield were active continuously. So why doesn't the same apply for a shield with no Armor Check Penalty? Because it's coming out of his arse is why!!!! :headexplo :headexplo :headexplo At least his ratio of correct:incorrect is better than what he usually gets; a 1:5 instead of 1:2..... |
| Odimax11-24-06, 12:34 AM | Is this about the ring of force shield? If so, I think the answer to your question is: "because the shield would be deactivated, meaning it ISN'T THERE. Unfortunately a shield with no armor check penalty is still a shield, while a ring of force shield would become just a ring when deactivated. Does this make sense (I may be confused on your question)? |

Re: The Latter Because it takes a move action (or is it standard?) to equip or de-equip a shield, thus you really can't do a 'free action on/off' trick with it. RE: The Former First, the FAQ does say that a Monk can take Improved Natural Attack, so you're just kinda wrong on that one. Secondly, you can only enhance masterwork weaponry with plusses and weapon abilities, so unless you can figure out a way to get masterwork-quality HANDS, then you can't do it. R to the A to the ****in' W. :) Nice try, though. |
| crazysamaritan11-24-06, 12:43 AM | A monk’s unarmed strike is treated both as a manufactured weapon and a natural weapon for the purpose of spells and effects that enhance or improve either manufactured weapons or natural weapons. Now if sage wants to change from enchance to enchant, that's fine, but as it is, he's directly contradicting the rules. As for the sheild, you didn't explain why you cannot attack with the shield on. If you have a weapon in your off hand, you cannot use the shield's bonus to defense if you chose to attack with that arm. Stupid rule, but it's in there. |

If you have a weapon in your off hand, you cannot use the shield's bonus to defense if you chose to attack with that arm. Stupid rule, but it's in there. PHB, Shield, Light, Pg. 125: "A light shield's weight lets you carry other items in that hand, although you cannot use weapons with it." The heavy steel shield doesn't even let you carry another item in that hand. And the Sage is right. 'Enhance' is giving an item a permanent plus, which you cannot do because your hands are not masterwork. You cannot enhance a non-masterwork version of a manufactured weapon, and you can't enhance a natural weapon at all. |
| Zherog11-24-06, 12:57 AM | I'm not one to defend Andy, but I think he's correct in this instance. Yes, and unarmed strike is consider a natural or manufactured weapon - whichever is more beneficial at the time. That's exactly why a monk can take the Improved Natural Attack feat (see FAQ [October 18, 2006 version], page 22). However, as Salla pointed out, in order to enchant a weapon with a +1 enhancement bonus the weapon needs to be "masterwork" quality. That's something your unarmed strikes do not have, regardless of whether you consider them to be manufactured or natural weapons. Andy goes on to point out that the amulet of mighty fists fills the purpose of allowing a monk to gain an enhancement bonus to his unarmed strikes. Another option for the monk that isn't listed would be getting a magic fang or greater magic fang spell cast. That would also enable the monk to gain an enhancement bonus, though only temporarily. *** And I really can't see what your beef is over the ring of force shield. As best as I can tell, everything Andy said there is exactly correct. You might not like that the rules state you can't attack with a weapon held in the same hand as a light shield, but what you like and dislike is meaningless to this discussion. |
| allenchan11-24-06, 01:15 AM | Im going to chime in with everyone else here, these seem to make sense by the RAW, I dont see the conflict. |
| Salla11-24-06, 01:18 AM | Im going to chime in with everyone else here, these seem to make sense by the RAW, I dont see the conflict. I think the OP may be confusing 'Enhance', a specific game term meaning 'Use a Craft Magic Arms and Armor, spend gold and XP to put a plus or a special ability on something', with enhance, referring to anything that may bolster an ability. Casting Magic Fang or Magic Weapon on a monk's fist enhances it, but doesn't Enhance it (despite the Enhancement bonus). |
| Airos11-24-06, 10:43 PM | Or, one could just opt for a Necklace of Natural Weapons from Savage Species. Oh? I can't make my fists +3 Flaming and Spell Storing? Well, for an extra 600 gold, I now have a +3 Flaming, Spell Storing Natural Weapon. And as a side note, Savage Species suggests that you can add the Throwing and Returning enchantments to your natural weapons with this item. Umm..... How in the Nine Hells does one throw its claws, let alone catch them on the return? |
| Neutronium_Dragon11-24-06, 11:28 PM | You wouldn't throw claws. You do throw manticore tail spikes, though. Throwable natural weapons are uncommon, but they do exist. |

I would envision it as shooting the claws like darts from the fingertips, then having them regenerate at the appropriate time as dictated by the Returning enhancement. |
| X-Codes11-25-06, 02:24 AM | I was expecting someone to rant about the bad polymorph ruling, the extra spell ruling, and the use of Practiced Spellcaster to enter PrC's, although these really shouldn't be called "rulings" because the FAQ is just one man's interpretation of the RAW, not actual RAW in and of itself. Could this give valuable insight into the RAI? Yes. In that case, they should call it errata, because thats what errata means. FAQ's are supposed to have their answers founded firmly in the RAW, not the RAI or the RAWTFIWTTB (Rules As Whatever The :censored: I Want Them To Be). However much the Sage might like to he does, he does not rule D&D. |
| The White Sorcerer11-25-06, 03:19 AM | A direct contradiction of the written information on the monk's unarmed strikes. No. |

How in the Nine Hells does one throw its claws, let alone catch them on the return? There is also a feat in Savage Species which lets a monster with regeneration tear off a limb and throw it. (The name escapes me at the moment, but it was a cool idea.) Good times. As for the unarmed strike ruling, them's the ropes. But, seriously, it's not like it's all that hard to get someone to cast Greater Magic Fang for ya. |

| LostPassWordDoesNotWork11-26-06, 02:44 PM | I am sitting here puzzled as to why people arguing. Where can I get masterwork fists? DM: "You find what looks to be like a large golden coin on the floor" RAW Player: "I cast Bull’s Strength and try to pick it up." DM:  "Ok." Player: "Can I put it in my pocket?" DM: "Yes but RAW Player has it in is hand right now." RAW Player: "wtf?" :uh-huh: RAW Player: "omfg! what a noobie DM" RAW Player: "I hate you, die in fire. I am right!" DM & the other players: :uh-huh: 5-year-old kid listening: "The coins large as in larger than other coins like it normaly, not that it's 20 feet tall and weighs a ton." DM & the other players: Get what RAW Player might be thinking DM & other players:  RAW Player: "You cannot use the word large like that, large is being used else where. I am still right. Bow to my knowledge!" DM: (does exatcly what should be done) "Your out of my game if you want to make arguments about eveything or whine and complain becuase Congress didn't check over the rules and ok then to be written as law." RAW Player: "I am still right." Players: :nonono: Next game. DM & real players: :cloud9: :evillaugh :duel: :ghosted: :dancin: :pint:  RAW Player: (at home) :allalone: "I am still right..." All this had to happen becuse life is hard, eveything in life has some catch to it that spoils your day. The only-by-RAW players is lifes way of ruining a good game. |
| Airos11-26-06, 05:41 PM | There are no enchantments that can be put on weapons are armor. NONE. Throwing and Returning aren't Enchantments. They are ENHANCEMENTS. Actually... Creating a magic weapon has a special prerequisite: The creator’s caster level must be at least three times the enhancement bonus of the weapon. If an item has both an enhancement bonus and a special ability the higher of the two caster level requirements must be met. A magic weapon must have at least a +1 enhancement bonus to have any of the abilities listed on Table: Melee Weapon Special Abilities or Table: Ranged Weapon Special Abilities. ...they would be neither, since the SRD refers to them as Special Abilities. An enhancement bonus ranges from +1 to +5 in non-epic settings, and adds an equal amount to both the attack roll and damage roll. Special Abilities add various magic effects, such as an increased threat range or flames. And as an interesting side note, this is what the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary (http://www.webster.com/) has to say about enchantment (http://www.webster.com/dictionary/enchantment), enchant (http://www.webster.com/dictionary/enchanting) and bewitch (http://www.webster.com/dictionary/bewitch); Main Entry: en·chant·ment Pronunciation: in-'chant-m&nt, en- Function: noun 1 a : the act or art of enchanting b : the quality or state of being enchanted 2 : something that enchants <the enchantments of sailing> Main Entry: en·chant Pronunciation: in-'chant, en- Function: transitive verb Etymology: Middle English, from Anglo-French enchanter, from Latin incantare, from in- + cantare to sing -- more at CHANT 1 : to influence by or as if by charms and incantation : BEWITCH 2 : to attract and move deeply : rouse to ecstatic admiration <the scene enchanted her to the point of tears -- Elinor Wylie> synonym see ATTRACT Main Entry: be·witch Pronunciation: bi-'wich, bE- Function: verb transitive verb 1 a : to influence or affect especially injuriously by witchcraft b : to cast a spell over 2 : to attract as if by the power of witchcraft : ENCHANT, FASCINATE <bewitched by her beauty> intransitive verb : to bewitch someone or something - be·witch·ery /-'wi-ch(&-)rE/ noun - be·witch·ing·ly /-'wi-chi[ng]-lE/ adverb Everyone, repeat after me: There is no such thing as a weapon enchantment There is no such thing as a weapon enchantment There is no such thing as a weapon enchantment Enchantment refers to the enchantment school of magic. they affect behavior and thoughts, not weapons. There is no such thing as a weapon enchantment I guess we'll disagree on this point, since I don't see anyone in my games asking, in character, if they can get their weapons and armor enhanced, but rather, enchanted since enhancement is the effective bonus weapons and armor have to determine the market value of the item, and enchantment means something magical. If this is the biggest problem you have with people and the things they say on the boards, you're in great shape.:cheer: I envy you. :tiphat: Note:The above post is In My Honest Opinion.
