That's right...and the mage has upwards of 5-to-6 times as much magical items.

Heck the mage has a Ring of Regeneration (90,000gp) and I have a Ring of Feather Fall (2,200) and a Ring of Protection +1 (2,000gp)!!!

I tried telling the GM that its unfair and all that...but no...

I wouldn't be surprised that someone figures out the ruse and captures him...ala the goose that lays the golden eggs in Jack and the Beanstalk...

A spell that transforms copper into platinum permanently is way over powered for the level where you have about 5-10k worth of magic items. I personally wouldn't allow at any level short of epic because even Polymorph Any Object can't create objects of great intrinsic value (and it is a level 8 spell).

A spell that transformed copper into platinum for a brief time and had either an xp component or an expensive material component would be acceptable. In 2e there was a second level spell called Fool's Gold. It had a duration of 1 hour/level, cost 50 gp to cast, and could be dispelled by tapping the "gold pieces" firmly with a piece of iron. Basically it gave you the opportunity to scew a person over in the short term, but it would earn you an enemy, and since it had an expensive component it wasn't worth it just to trick peasants.

Hmm...maybe the spell does have an XP component?

I was wondering why I had 7,000 more XP than he does and I've missed 2 sessions in this campaign...

Hmm...

Creating a ring of regen would only cost a few thousand XP (and a fair amount of money). However, you have to be pretty high level to get the Forge Ring feat at all.

What spell is he using? Is it a custom spell?

Polymorph any object useless.

From the phb.
“this spell can not create material of great intrinsic value such as COPPER, silver, gems, silk”

emphasis mine

now if copper is considered a material of great intrinsic value I would have to assume that anything of greater intrinsic value would be also.

Iron is worth nearly as much as copper. Steel is worth more than iron thus no weapon or armour can be made of steel with this spell. Why would it be unable to make such low value items as a sword or a suite of armour? Or for that mater a single copper coin.

No.

There is no way, no how I would let a player do this. I would be annoyed at the suggestion.

It's usually a pretty bad idea to let players make items or spells outside of the published lists for this very reason.

Your DM needs to learn to say no or he can kiss the integrity of the story and the balance of his game away.

Your DM is in dire need of either of the following treatments:

1) Arturick's shovel.

2) A whiffle-bat beating so severe it ends in a week long hospital stay.

I prefer the whiffle bat method myself, but the shovel is faster and generally less tiring.

No let the dm learn.
I game briefly decades ago under a dm who thought wizards should be more better.
at first level the wizard took out a brown bear which had waxed most of the group.
At 6 th level the wizard had a mansion, scroll library etc. And the dm was thinking about rethinking his house rules because the wizard was waxing basically Cr 12+ level critters alone.

Sounds like a new GM and a tricky player. Either that or a horrendously broken third-party spell.

In either case, it's not on.

where can I find this spell, and how can I convince the DM to let me use it as a lvl 1 ranger spell? ::eg::
