| Harmor06-21-04, 03:15 AM | Ok...I have this guy in my group that will ALWAYS mess with an shrine/altar, no matter what character he's using. This is his 4th character this campaign, all of which previously died because of events that started with him messing with a shrine. I tell him in character, "Don't mess with the evil altar...we don't know what it'll do." And what does he do...activates it right in the middle of combat!!! Example: We're in a large room that we decended into from a hidden grate we found in an evil city. Inside this room is an evil altar (eminates evil...blah blah blah), that seems to be 'missing a piece' to a large circular disk in its center. We notice this 'missing piece' in another part of the room which obviously fits it...I say, "Don't mess with that evil altar. We don't know what it'll do. Let go explore this other room." Well during a large battle were we're pushed back into this room he, in the MIDDLE OF COMBAT with a 15th level mage (we're all level 10-12) that we came here to kill he places the piece into the evil altar while my character is yelling at him not too (but too far/too many mobs between us for me to stop him). Next thing we know this altar opens a dimentional rift and a "being" comes though. The 15th level mage that we were fighting (who also was yelling for him not to...weird...) sealed us in this room with a Wall of Iron and ran away. Things are not looking good for us especially when we just had our arse handed to us by a 15th level mage...now we have to deal with this "being"... Nonetheless we beat the being after expending several thousand gold pieces in items/charges and literally all our spells from our mage and cleric. My character is LN, but he's NE who has been charmed by our LE mage in the party. How do I deal with the problem...not with his character...because I'll probabaly just coup'de grace him in his sleep, but the person? |
| Hathorym06-21-04, 03:25 AM | There is no advice that can be given... to be honest. You can try talking to him OOC about the issue, but I get the sense that since he knows it bugs you, he'll continue to do it. Sounds to me like you just have a RP Bully on your hands. Different Character - Same Schtick. |
| Nimrud06-21-04, 05:35 AM | Is the DM bothered by his behaviour? If he is, it's simple. Have the DM talk to the player. If that doesn't work, the DM could fix him, e.g. by making the next evil altar curse his character only, say, in an embarrassing non-fatal kind of way like growing an extra bosom or three  Other characters proceed with the expected ridicule and derision. Repeat until lesson is learnt. If he doesn't learn the lesson or if he finds some other way to disrupt the game, boot and ban. Gaming is for fun. There's no point wasting time with a spoiler. |
| Nagol06-21-04, 10:29 AM | Let me get this straight, You are in an evil party. In the middle of a tough combat, the guy summoned a WORSE baddie then sealed you in with it and the first combatants while he took off. You lived and want to know an appropriate response? KILL HIM. Loot the corpse. Then animate the corpse as a skeleton, dig a DEEP hole (passwall is particularly effective for the upper layers) and put the skelteon at the bottom and forget about it. Or, drop him into the negative material plane, whichever you prefer. This is one of those characteristics of characters that will either get fixed through object lessons in game or it won't. The player has to learn that sort of behaviour is unacceptable to the group and the group will not tolerate it from members. If it doesn't repair itself within a set timeframe (say, three intra-party kills) don't game with him any more. |
| MrkGrismer06-21-04, 02:39 PM | I don't believe he said it is an evil group (not that I can see anyway). Anyways, buy a mousetrap and put a figure of a small evil alter in place of the cheese. Everytime you are in a room that has an evil alter in it, put that out on the table in front of player X. "Go ahead, you know you want to." |

| yonman06-21-04, 04:43 PM | Oh please, if this guy obviously likes touching bad alters, then simply don't go in the room when there is one. If you get pushed into a room while fighting, just leave. If everyone else in the group feels the same way you do, then they'll follow you instead of that smuck who keeps molesting the shrine. Eventually he'll get the hint when he's left alone with a Summoned creature and sealed in a room with no one else. Either that or he'll be left with a 1st level guy and everyone else is level 20. Or............... he's just stupid. |
| Moonstonedragon06-21-04, 07:39 PM | What I do is give them a curse which reflects what god/goddess they desided to "mess" with. Nothing like death, death doesnt scare some players, it just a way for them to make a new char. Heres what I did a while back One of the newer players we had played the typical mucho fighter that was always trying to always get layed. He decided his goddess will be goddess of love. During one adventure he decided to sleep with a women, she fell in love with him and started following him. He got angry that he couldnt go around sleep with 50 women a night since this one always followed him. So he killed her inside a shrine of love threw her body on the alter and told the goddess ^%& love I only want sex. Now ALL women hate him, -10 to all cha skills vs. women, no women will go within 10' near him, and if they are pinned in corner they get instant teleport to safety. It took him nearly 8 years (in game time) to repent for his sin against the goddess. So basically do something like that. If its god of disease give him an uncurable type of mummy rot. God of pain give him fits of pain that happen at bad times. God of war give him BAB of a wizard. And on top of all this DO NOT let them make new char to avoid getting this. |
| yonman06-21-04, 07:59 PM | Originally posted by Moonstonedragon And on top of all this DO NOT let them make new char to avoid getting this. I agree in that some people just like making new characters over and over. If this is the case simply tell him that we're continuing with the campaign with or without your dead character. Frankly, some people who see no problem with death and re-starting characters shouldn't be playing a D20 game. |
| a18ffe06-22-04, 12:01 PM | I will give him a high five and say good job. Any fight that uses that much resources and you manage to survive mean mondo XP. In char, I will beat the crap out of him. |
| Skaboozh06-23-04, 01:24 AM | The DM should strike him down. It's incredibly foolish to just randomly try and active evil altars without knowing exactly what to do. If I were you, I would have knocked him out and tied him up. Bring him back to town, drop him off, and let his character know in no uncertain terms that if he ever manages to find you and does anything that could cause you more harm, you will not hesitate to kill him. |
| danielinthewolvesden06-23-04, 05:28 PM | Well, if that's all he wants to do in a game where your PC has been Charmed by an evil mage in your own freaken party- then I say good luck to him. Maybe he'll summon something that will eat that evil mage. Why aren't you complaining about the PC who has charmed yours?:b:   |
| wdarkk06-24-04, 01:24 AM | On solution from a DM in my area is to have his character become a small and harmless animal PERMANENTLY and require that he continue to use that character. Railroading from heck, but it's now a DUCK and is severely limited in activating evil alters by lack of hands. |

Railroading from heck, but it's now a DUCK and is severely limited in activating evil alters by lack of hands. If I was a player in that game, I'd either walk or make SURE my duck-PC activated every single altar- even if I had to sneak into evil temples to do so. What a :censored: & immature thing to do. |
| Nick Soapdish06-24-04, 07:27 PM | How did he get the piece from the other room and stick it in the altar during the middle of combat? Or why did you let him carry the piece? I've got a couple ideas though. First, talk to him OOC. If that doesn't work, then any time that you see a room with an evil altar, let him "scout it out". Everyone else remain at the door. If he messes with the altar, just slam the door and lock it. If idea 2 is impractical and he isn't amenable to 1, kick him out. Obviously, this requires that all of the players not like it. In character, your party members simply decide to kick him out (assuming that he's survived his last indiscretion) thanks to the aforementioned indiscretion. And then you decide not to take on any additions because for some reason, they're all freaks that feel the need to offend gods. After a couple times of that, I'd be much more inclined to just adventure with the folks that I already know to be trustworthy. |
| eRaz0r06-24-04, 07:42 PM | There's a deeper problem here. Why the F*** does every altar in this game have mystical powers ? I mean not *every* temple will have a magically powerful altar in it. Sure the Clergy are powerful Clerics and all, but it's such a trite and pathetic schtick. "ooh - another altar that radiates evil... I've never seen one of those before.. " No wonder he wants to screw with them all - he's trying to get his DM to try something new for a change ! |
| wdarkk06-24-04, 07:49 PM | Originally posted by danielinthewolvesden If I was a player in that game, I'd either walk or make SURE my duck-PC activated every single altar- even if I had to sneak into evil temples to do so. What a :censored: & immature thing to do. He wasn't the greatest of DMs. He also used 100d100 damage blasts of divine energy from time to time. |
| Feneem06-25-04, 02:36 AM | I got to ask, does he roll every die? |
| wdarkk06-25-04, 03:11 AM | Don't know. He wasn't my DM, just a local one. I'd imagine he stopped rolling after the total became high enough. |
| howlingwolf06-25-04, 06:38 AM | Hey, if wanting to add a spin to the 'turn into a toad' or whatever, have the accumulated gods show up. Their beef being.. Will your kindly stop MESSING UP OUR ALTARS! If he's truly the scourge of evil temples, or heck, just about any temple, eventually even the gods might get annoyed with a single adventurer messing with so many conduits of their follower's belief. :D YOU can be even more immature, and have him cursed. Turned into a duck or compelled to right, reconstruct, and impulsively polish / clean any altar he screws with. ( A altar to the god of faecal matter? Oh mannn... ) I mean any cleric worth their salt, and of the appropriate alignment, would be glad to lay down such a thing. After all, descration is desecration! Or you could just have the 100-foot statues fall on him. Or read a few of Yaegar's adventures from Nodwick. :D Last idea. Mage, inflict mucho pain upon. |
| tarkin06-25-04, 04:00 PM | Just have your PC say you will not travel with him anymore. The rest of the party has to decide if they want you or him. |
| The_EvilDungeon_Master06-25-04, 04:43 PM | My advice: Stay near the exit, then run. |
| Pyriel06-25-04, 05:20 PM | simply put...cast geas on him and make him do what you say......youll never get within 20' of an altar again. |
| danielinthewolvesden06-25-04, 06:12 PM | Well, since as you said- it is all his PC's- then it is not a character problem, it is a player problem. This is a wild & crazy idea- why don't you ask him, player to player?:D |
| bahamut_006-26-04, 06:46 AM | Originally posted by danielinthewolvesden Well, since as you said- it is all his PC's- then it is not a character problem, it is a player problem. This is a wild & crazy idea- why don't you ask him, player to player?:D Exactly, there's no need for these incredible character punishments, I doubt he cares much about his character if he has him touching altars of evil deities and whatnot. Just talk to the player about, ask him to stop, and if he won't express that you would appreiciate it if he didn't play in that case. Or slap him around a bit :D |
| Sphyre06-26-04, 04:27 PM | It's a player fault to be unable to play a different character no matter what character you're playing. I have one freind who is similar. No matter what character he would play he would try to burn down churches and **** on their ashes... as a level 1 character, as a level 5 cleric of the same god, as a level 20 character. If the Player can't role play, then the player can't role play, the player can't role play. Here's the ultimatum: 'Role play your character, not yourself, or leave. This isn't a monkey house for making all of your wild perverse repressed feelings a reality without consequence.' |
