Ok, here's the scoop. We are going on a thread where we have to fight and kill a group of Vampires. There are probablly up to 10 of them alltogether, but I think we will be facing them in groups of 2 or 3 at a time over the course of a couple of adventures.

For the most part we can get past their special powers, but what I am having a problem with is gasious form. They can all go gasious at will, which makes it extremly difficult to truely kill them. We have made our checks to know that they must be killed in their own lair to permenately destroy them, but I have no ideas on how to counter the gasious form so that we can kill them. Every time they are in a no win situation or are getting beat up they go gasious and escape.

What would you guys recomend?

((By the way, this group of Vampsis actually our old party that got party wiped by a Vampire Lord, so we REALLY want them dead))

Keep a mage handy with fireball or some other such area effect waiting to go as a readied action. When the vampire goes gaseous, the bomb goes off.

The best way to kill a vampire is to find the location of his coffin and destroy him there. A vampire reduced to 0 hp automatically assumes gaseous form and has 2 hours to reach his coffin. There he must stay for 1 hour during which he is helpless. So the best way to finish off a vampire is to beat the hell out of it, and then go to his coffin and drive a stake through his heart.

Not quite.

The best way is to destroy his coffin so he can't return to it within the allotted time. :)

Of course, a smart vampire has his coffin made from stone with only a small hole to get in and out, rather than hinges and a lid.

Of course they might also have spare coffins around with the dirt from thier grave in other places as well.

Ok. So it isn't the best way. It's just a very good way:)

What level is this at? Sticking them in a Forcecage (windowless cell version) and waiting for daylight works pretty well, if they can't teleport.

Otiluke's Resiliant Sphere aught to work, methinks... at least, as a delay tactic. A wand of Resilient Sphere could use 18 charges (probably only requiring a save for the 1st attempt, given that the vampire's Reflex save, when encapsulated, can't get it outside of the sphere's enclosing area) to utterly destroy a vampire after it's been reduced to 0 HP.

Resilient Sphere
Evocation [Force]
Level: Sor/Wiz 4
Components: V, S, M
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Effect: 1-ft.-diameter/level sphere, centered around a creature
Duration: 1 min./level (D)
Saving Throw: Reflex negates
Spell Resistance: Yes

A globe of shimmering force encloses a creature, provided the creature is small enough to fit within the diameter of the sphere. The sphere contains its subject for the spell’s duration. The sphere is not subject to damage of any sort except from a rod of cancellation, a rod of negation, a disintegrate spell, or a targeted dispel magic spell. These effects destroy the sphere without harm to the subject. Nothing can pass through the sphere, inside or out, though the subject can breathe normally.

The subject may struggle, but the sphere cannot be physically moved either by people outside it or by the struggles of those within.

Material Component: A hemispherical piece of clear crystal and a matching hemispherical piece of gum arabic.

Also, a Vampire's will save won't necessarily be all that good, which means that a Scrying attempt, especially if you manage to snag a fleshy bit of the vampire during the fight, can find the location of the vamp's coffin quite easily.

Side note: I'd recommend against actually ****ing vampires. Not only is it gross, you're risking major negative levels to a vulnerable area.

You know that gaseous form does not make you immune to damage DR10/magic. They only fly at 20 feet (10 feet for a non vampire). Surround and hack it to little smelly fart pieces...

oh wait, when a vampire is forced into gaseous form i.e. when reduded to 0hps, any additional damage dealt to a vampire forced into gaseous form has no effect. :( . But if it voluntarily assumes gaseous form you can hack it to bits, though I guess once it gets to 0 you are back to square 1...

it only flys at 20 feet. Chase it down and follow it to its coffin. Hopfully you get close enough to its lair that you can find it within an hour.

You could capture it in a barrel - a big plastic zip lock bag would be just the ticket. summon an air elemental or similar to contain it in gaseous form.

I love it. Though, I wonder, why hadn't I thought of doing this...

I second that. A bit expensive, but it works. Bring the Vamp to 0 hp and cage it. It has only 2 hours to reach its coffin (forcecage duration 2h/lvl). If the vampire is a spellcaster you might add dimensional anchor, antimagic aura,... . Weapons with the disruption ability from the DMG are also handy. The Will save DC is low, but they will fail if you hit them often enough. Since by the rules you need only to hit but not to damage them for this ability to work it can be used even against gaseous vampires (which will usually have lower Will saves without functioning equipment). Another viable method is to use locate creature, scrying,... and follow the Vamp to his coffin while it is in (slow) gaseous form (best method is usually to be in gaseous form yourself...). Finally, indoors you can just use the Windwall spell (or resilient sphere) in cylindrical form from floor to ceiling to trap a gaseous vampire for a short time (but it's cheap)

Just to clear this up a bit, our party is all in the lvl 11-12 range. We have a monk, 3 fighters of various specialities, and 2 clerics, we occasionally have a wizard but he has been MIA for the last 3 months so you can write him off (along with wizard spells).

Some of these ideas are great, I just wish I could find something that didn't need a wizard.

Personally, I find repeatedly hitting them with Flaming Vampire-Slaying swords, shooting them with Vampire-Slaying Snake-class guided missile launchers, magnetic linear accelerators loaded with stakes, incendiary rocketgun rounds or orbital bombardment to be effective.

Parking a heavy Grav-Tank on top of them works two, especially it you invert the shields and keep 'em locked inside until the sun comes up. As does trapping their gaseous forms in a bottle and banging on the side of a laugh.

Fun Fact: Vampires can't survive nuclear or anti-matter warhead explosions.

Whatever method you use, I recommend ridiculously excessive violence. Screaming "You are not the lords of Undead, you pointy-toothed, gothic poncy gits!" is optional, but highly recommended.

I saw the title. I saw you responded. I knew exactly the type of things you would be saying. I did not know exactly what they would be, but I knew it would involve violence and hatred upon vampires.

You do not disappoint you skeletal bastard :P

Well, I really couldn't miss a golden opportunity like that slip past without sticking my much-unwanted boney oar in, could I?

It'd be rude not to!

Nice to know I'm so dependable! (Or something.)

Also, I want to know why Wiz-O the Hutt felt compelled to edit about half the thread...

At a guess, I'd say the original topic (and by extension all the replies until it was edited) used the actual word in the title line rather then the masked version.

Why do I get the feeling you've played Rifts before? In a campaign that took place in Mexico? :P

Nope. Never in my life or Undeath.

Our high-tech, high-magic army of Undeath is entirely unique!

Death by Create Water.

First, that only works if the hole designed for entry is in a place that would allow the water the stay. If the gaseous form entry hole is on the bottom, it'll be a little more difficult.

Second, vampires can stand/sit/lay/whatever in standing water. You would need to find a way to make the water considered "running" water. :)

Are you able to follow the vampire while it's in gaseous form? Or is the vampire smart enough to have its coffin tucked away someplace safe?

That, Zherog, is what Decanters of Endless Water of are for...

(We did once come out with a beautiful idea for a plan to assassinate a Vampire King by judicious use of a portal spell and said Decanater; equally, a gate to the Plane of Water should do the job nicely!)

Are you able to follow the vampire while it's in gaseous form? Or is the vampire smart enough to have its coffin tucked away someplace safe?

You made a bit of a typo there, Zherog; you used the words 'smart' and 'Vampire' contiguously in the same sentence.

Yes. We are in a New York sized city and know what bulding an approximately what floor their lair is on.

I love the decanter of endless water idea. As of now that is my primary plan.
Anyone know how much one of thse costs off the top of your head?

And the post was edited because the title was "F" then "***" then "ing Vampires" and that was apparently not PC enough.

As if we don't know what four-letter, frequently-censored word goes immideately before a word that annoys players and three exclimation points...

Honestly, it's just a bit ridiculous at this point. :P

As an aside, it makes me think back to the BoEF's entry on sentient undead, where *********** with a vampire was likened to "Making love with ice-cold velvet"..
