| ShadowDragon868509-24-06, 10:06 PM | Yes, this is a continuation of the Frikkin' Clerics (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=704643) thread started by the vampire in question. So, about 5 minutes after the game was supposed to start, I finally got the DM's AIM, from the DM. He asked me about the 'greviances' I had mentioned, and I started to talk to him. Then I showed him the thread started by JadeFox. As an aside, right now I'd like to mention that JadeFox said he was using a coak from the Libris Mortis that let him go outside in sunshine without dieing, because it cast shadows over him. (And WHY none of the townsfolk think this is strange, I do not know.) So, I tell the DM about my grievance that I feel Jax is mitigating my character's primary ability, and that I'm afraid to use Turn Undead for fear he'll stab me in my sleep. His soloution is as simple as it is asinine. JadeFox's vampire spawn is now Immune to Turn/Rebuke Undead. No explination, no Major Artifact-level item. He's just immune. I ask the DM where's my unique inherant power, where's Antonio's (warmage's) inherant unique power, where's Roxxor's (half-orc barbarian) inherant, unique power. We don't get any. I ask the DM what's up with that, and I tell him that frankly I think it's crap and favortism, and he starts YELLING AT ME IN ALLCAPS, telling me off. Here's the conversation with his yelling: ShadowDragon8685: He starts a disruptive character, stirs the ****, and then gets a major artifact? <DM>: the game is starting over there <DM>: and he doesn't get a major artifact <DM>: he just is immune ShadowDragon8685: Oh, it's an innate power? <DM>: call it luck or fate ShadowDragon8685: That's even better. ShadowDragon8685: Where's my innate unique power? Or Roxxor's? Or Antonio's? <DM>: I AM ****ING TRYING TO LET US START PLAYING AND YOU ARE JUST TRYING TO STIR THINGS UP! <DM>: IF ANYONE IS A ****-STIRRER RIGHT NOW, IT'S YOU! <DM>: NOW LET'S GET TO THE GAME! ShadowDragon8685: Why don't you let him be level 10 while you're at it? <DM>: HIS POWER IS FOR THE SAKE OF PARTY COMPATIBILITY! I'm pretty damn angry about this, to be honest. And not unjustly, I think. He's basically letting the vampire ignore the specified drawbacks of both the Vampire monster and the Undead type, while at the same time benefiting from all of the benefits thereof. What's next - allowing a dirt-easy Will save to enter a household uninvited? Smacking a holy symbol/mirror out of my hand when I strongly present it? This just cheezes me off. Why should he get to ignore the drawbacks of his type? Why don't I get immunity to negative energy? Antonio gets Warlock powers as a battlemage of half his level? Let the orc barbarian Rage as a barbarian twice his level and with none of the drawbacks thereof? |
| HauptSin09-24-06, 10:27 PM | You had a problem. DM gives in and says "f*** it, fine" thus negating said problem. You continue to complain. Sorry to burst your bubble, but I do believe you just might be in the wrong here. You know, just maybe. A little. |
| humantoilet09-24-06, 10:54 PM | no matter how badly I wanted to game or liked the others playing I would just make a post in the chat explaining why i am leaving and then leave. Don't wait for a response, just leave. Your resentment for these 2 guys will continue to grow and you will read into each of their actions constantly and feel you are perpetually shafted. In my opinion its not healthy for you to stay and there are other online gamers looking for quality people. But hey, who am I and what do I know. My name is Humantoilet after all. |
| anshar09-24-06, 11:18 PM | Why not offer up a compromise? Suggest to your DM that he immune to your turning for the sake party compatibility but not to turning in general. That way he isn't really more powerful than other vampire spawn except against you. If that's still a problem for you it implies that you just want to toast him. If it's not a problem for you then game on... go roll some dice and have fun with the roleplaying dynamic that's been introduced. |
| Torbida09-24-06, 11:33 PM | ShadowDragon, my two cp is to drop out. I have read the previous treads pertaining to this including the one that has been locked. JadeFox and this DM are making your life Baator. Just leave. Block both of them and seek others to play with. JadeFox seems jerkish and the DM does not want to see the problem (Asmodeus knows why). I agree with you, you are getting the shaft and JadeFox's weaknesses are being nullified. That is unfair. Leave. And don't look back. Bad players and unfair DMs are not worth the frustration they cause. I wish you the best of luck in your future gaming. May you find accepting players, reasonable DMs, and as always may your dice roll high! |
| ShadowDragon868509-24-06, 11:58 PM | Well, I talked with the DM after the game, with JadeFox out of the picture. I think I successfully communicated my displeasure to him that JadeFox was getting to play an overpowered race and getting a free ride past it's drawbacks. I explained as such to the DM. He said that it's not the first time JadeFox has played something over-the-top and crazy, and I think JadeFox hoodwinked the DM about the sunlight vunerability. He said something to me about it being a magic cloak from Libris Mortis that immunizes him to the sun, but he told the DM it was just a mundane cloak that kept the sunlight from his skin. I'm quite sure it dosen't work that way, and told the DM so. So, it may be handled, it may not. The DM said he was going to have a chat with JadeFox tomorrow, and I suggested we turn him from a Vampire into a Deathless. In any event... We'll see. We will see... |
| Pilliquock09-25-06, 03:08 AM | Just flip the problem on its head. Instead of giving the vampire immunity, you could gain selectivity in your undead turning with regards to him. That way your power is not being arbitrarily restricted solely for party cohesion (it would be unfortunate if your turning proved worthless should he go "rogue"), rather you gain a limited expansion of power to the extent that you can decide whether your turning will effect him or not. Call it a power bestowed by companionship, though based on your post perhaps companionship has worn thin. |
| ShubNiggurath09-25-06, 04:19 AM | Since *he* is getting an overpowered character, *you* should get something that favors party compatibility. I would rule that all the clerics in this campaign can choose not to affect an undead with their turning. To tune down the power, I would limit it to a single undead. So any cleric in this campaign can look to a pack of skeletons and say: I like that guy, he is going to be immune from my next turning attempt. And roll to turn all the others with normal rules. So if you want to be nice, you can make him ignore all your turning, but if it gets to in-party fighting, then you can turn him. Also make sure that the DM enforces the ruels of sunlight, holy simbols, rivers, having to sleep in his coffin and so on. EDIT: darn, pilliquock beat me to that! |
| IceFractal09-25-06, 05:39 AM | The characters seem totally incompatible. Maybe not for the right group, but in this case there's OOC hostility - I don't see it going anyplace good. With that said, unless you're trying to "accidentally" vaporize the vampire character, I would think you'd be happy to have the DM just exempt the vampire from your turning. The alternative is the vampire doing things by the books and using the Lifeward spell, which would soak up HD from your turning with no effect. |
| LordHawkeye09-25-06, 07:50 AM | Go back and read the rules on turning. "Does not work on undead with total cover relating to you." So, just tell the vampire to hide behind something when you're about to do it or to buy a tower shield. End of problem WOW!! That was complicated! I think I'm gonna have to go lie down for a few hours... |
| Judging Eagle09-25-06, 09:02 AM | I've got the Libris Mortis. and frankly. I have no idea what the hell JadeFox thinks is giving him sunlight immunity. Wtf is he calling his 'cloak'? Oh, I'm gonna add costs out of the LM for those as well These are the closest thing to what you or he is mentioning out of LM. A Ghost Shorud? That leaves him unable to wear armour ( "A Ghost Shroud precludes wearing any other amrour." p. 76 LM). Oh, and it doesn't do **** to stop the sun from burning his mucnhkin vampire ass. It only grants +4 Deflection AC and allows you to attack as if you had ghost touch weapons/attacks (great for monks that fight Incorporal creatures, they get AC out of this and get Ghost Touch on their unarmed strikes). [CL 12th] 35,000 gp A Shadow Veil? That only grant's 20% concealment and +2 Deflection to AC; Also, he can't wear armour if he uses a Shadow Veil ( "A Shadow Veil precludes wearing any other amrour." p. 76 LM) [CL 12th] 10,000 gp The next closest thing to that is a cloak of Turn resistance; it only does One thing; add +4 to turn resistance. Nothing else....[CL 10th, caster must be Evil; 11,000 gp] Note: the caster must be evil to make this one, so it's an evil item. The least closest thing that he could possibly be calling that is... a set of Unholy Shrouds. However, they are meant to create undead. You wrap the lesser shrouds on a body ot make a Ghasat and the Greater Shrouds to make a wraith and they only work once. Nothing else is possible in the 5 pages of magic items that the LM uses. The only other plausible item is using Liquid Night (150 gp, DC 25 Alchemy p. 74 LM). However it only lasts one hour. So yeah. Jade's cretivley forgetting that none of the items he could buy out of th LM would allow him to do that. In this case, I'm afraid to say it, but JadeFox is now officially a munchkin. He's intentionally cheating to negate the only drawbacks that a powerful template grants him. Something along the lines of a Troll who regenetates from fire and acid damage, 'just 'cause'. |
| On_the_wings_of_TPK09-25-06, 03:32 PM | Ok first thing is first. The Monster manual specifies that the vampire must be exposed to Direct sunlight to be distroyed. If the sunlight is blocked, by say a large black cloak, or perhaps a blanket, or something simmiliar, then it isn't direct exposer anymore, and the vampire is fine. a lot of fiction movies/books expliot this to advance the plot, so it isn't even that cheesy. Secondly I've read all three posts on this, and Shawdodragon, your way out of line. Stop whinning! You can still use your turning, it just won't vaporize other party members. Seriousely what is wrong with him playing a vampire? You can now turn till you run out of turning, and Jadefox can still exsist, and you two can be happy. This was never about the turning, or jadefox being a vampire. You want an excuse to toast his character, and/or force him to change his character for you. Ever sence this started, you have have rejected every solution that did not envolve Jadefox making a new charcter. Why does he have to make a new character? Does his vampire, somehow threaten your internet dick or something? Is that it? His charcter is better then yours, and it threatens your masculenity? The DM came up with a solution, and then said thats how its going to work. Lets play. you on the other, felt that wasn't good enough, (Again becuase it aloud you and Jadefox to co-exsist, witch was unaccept for some reason) and pressed the point. What, the DM is only right as long as it benefets you? Had i been the DM, I would not have told you off. I would have told you to leave the game. My advice is unchanged. Grow up, and let Jadefox play his character, and you play yours. It is the Dms responciblity to balance his campiagn. You have no right to sujest how to nerf other player characters, nor do you have any right to try and other rule your DM. Your worse then a controll freak DM. Your a controll freak player. Seriousely just go shower with a toaster. |

SO to be fair I think they should both shower together with a toaster over, and a blender. Discuss? |
| Judging Eagle09-25-06, 04:35 PM | SO to be fair I think they should both shower together with a toaster over, and a blender. Discuss? Sure. I suggest that "Play in a microwave" be tabled as a new suggestion. Shadow; just accept that you can't turn Jade. If the DM lets him attack you without you being able to turn him however...that's a bad DM call. Also, enemy clerics should be able to rebuke him; that's part of the problem playing as an undead. And the DM shouldn't pull punches with that either. He gets get no save, and he's automatically cowering or controlled if he has 1/2 or less than their effective rebuking level. |
| On_the_wings_of_TPK09-25-06, 05:55 PM | TPK, while I do believe you may be correct now. When this first stated it was Jadefox that was in the wrong. SO to be fair I think they should both shower together with a toaster over, and a blender. Discuss? I made a post on the thread that jadefox started. It got deleted by a wizo however. The point of that one was however that they were both being tards about this. I still believe they are, however the DM as finnally stepped up to make a ruling. Shawdodragon doesn't agree with it, becuase it allows Jadefox's character to exsist. Hence why this one was directed at shawdodragon. Also in a thread that was started about a year ago, I recall advising both of them to shower with toasters. I still feel that all of this could have been avoided, if they'd had just followed my advice a year ago. I'm cool with them playing in a microwave, or on the freeway. Witch-ever. |
| Rhomphaia09-26-06, 03:38 AM | Yay, bash the player for a DM mistake. I'll jump on! Shadowdragon is completely out of line! Oh my god how dare he complain about another player being handed freebie abilities specifically to counter his? How dare he complain about a DM who is showing clear nepotism? How dare he complain about a munchkin player? OMFG! He needs to get kicked off the boards and his Player's Handbook burned! OMFG! OMFG! While Shadowdragon does need to send a much clearer message to his DM and group that he thinks this is wrong (and JadeFox is being a little munchkiny here) I still think the primary fault here lies with the DM, who is showing blatant stupidity over the entire issue and doesn't seem to be running his game well. I vote for hammergun enema here. The DM should have taken one look at JadeFox's sheet and said "No. We already have an undead-specializing cleric in the group. Party cohesion would get ****ed if you play this. Make something else." then all of this would have been avoided. However, not only did he allow the character, but at first he completely ignored the two conflicting players, then gave the vampire spawn epic-level abilities to make him able to exist in the party (and giving the party no defense if he should turn on them) and then yells (over IM) at the one player who complains (rightly so) about it. Personally, I wish I had this DM's AIM so I could give him a verbal (well, text) *****-slap and some lessons on good DMing. |
| Wuggadad09-26-06, 03:39 AM | Oh my. How absurdly silly. Vampire Spawn wandering around in daylight, trusting a silly little magic item to protect him. Dispel Magic success and the silly thing stops functioning for a few rounds. Oops. If you feel that you absolutely have to "win" AD&D, try that. Otherwise, quit the group and start a game for more mature players. |
| Bob Loblaw09-26-06, 09:09 AM | There was a interesting TV series that lasted 7 years. It had a spin off that lasted 5. The main character was a vampire hunter. Her sole purpose was to destroy demons, vampires mostly. She fell in love with a good vampire who helped her in her battles. She even had to kill him at one point when he turned evil. He ended up leaving her town and moving to another. He continued to good fight, along with a few others who were dedicated to the destruction of vampires. Meanwhile, she continued her battle against the creatures of night. She ended up falling for another vampire. Even though he was definately evil, he decided to go on a quest to get his soul back, just to win her heart. He ended up sacrificing himself to save all of humanity. Each of these vampires learned to stay out of the way when she would be killing other vamps. When her spellcasting companion would do something that affected all the vampires in an area, these allied vampires were quick to stay out of the way. These characters are looking at tons of books, comics, and even some movies. If the writers of these stories can figure out how to make it work, why can't you? Yeah, some of it is kinda cheesy, but it can be made to work. It sounds like both of you just want to butt heads. Until you both get over the my-character-is-best-syndrome, you are going to have problems. |
| Aeromus09-26-06, 11:26 AM | Players don't need to counter one another. The solution the DM offered just needs a bit a fluff to make work. "Jadefox, cursed with the disease of vampirism wanders the night stalking the evils that created him. Supported by the gods of good, in his quest, he was gifted with immunity to good cleric turning attempts." There, crappy fluff, but fluff all together. And, TPK, Wizo deletes a good 40% of my posts, in fact I think the fact they find them amusing to read before deleting them, is the only reason I'm still a member. |
| Judging Eagle09-26-06, 12:03 PM | Pretend to slag Shadowdragon for his standing up to a DM who has poor decision making skills. Een when the poor decisions are pointed out to him. ...[more info]... I vote for phonebooth-gun enema here. Fixed. Somehow... the replacing of hammers with phonebooths doesn't always work out so well; better for facial applications, I guess.. I'll leave the image of such a thing for the reader to try to erase from ther mind. QUICK! DON'T THINK ABOUT A WHITE BEAR! Gotcha. |
| On_the_wings_of_TPK09-26-06, 01:42 PM | This isn't about Jadefox being handed "epic abilities" though. I'd understand Shawdodragon getting peaved if Jadefox were given the staff of the cosmos, or all of a sudden radiated and anti turning field. But that isn't the case. What we have here is: Shawdodragon: "Jadefoxes character is undead! My character blows undead up, as its speciality! We can't co-exsist! If I turn him he will stab me in my sleep....No I can't give him to his iniative to move out of the way...Thats just too much of an incovence...He has to change characters.... Jadefox...But i don't want to change characters. I want to keep my whacky, character that breaks down party cohesion, and pisses off shawdodragon.... DM: :censored: both of you. Grow up, I'm not dealing with this. Shawdodaragon: Boards helpzours. Someone has a better character then me! He is a vampire, OMFG! How to do Kill it. Jadefox: Shight, Broads, one of my friends is trying to kill my character, what should i do. Whine, Whine Broads: Jadefox sucks, no shawdodragon sucks, no you both suck. Well maybe your DM sucks. Shawdodragon: Its all his fualt. He is screwing me, becuase i can't nuke him. I offered to raise him as a not vampire...He shouldn't be better then me. Jadefox: But I don't want to be a commoner. If I wanted to be human, I wouldn't have choosen a vampire. I want my munchkin vampire! Shawdodragon/Jadefox: :censored: you! DM: You both suck. Fine Jadefox, you can be turned no more. there happy? No one is vaporizing anyone! Lets play the :censored: game already. Shawdodragon: But, but he's epic and ****, now. I can't vaporize him. We have to co-exsist! This means I don't win, the you have to make a new character debate on the wizards boards. Oh-Noze! My interweb ***** is shrinking! DM: STFU and lets play! Shawdodragon: Ahh Broads help he's like epic, and, and, cheating and stuff! Oh-Woe is me! Broads: There, there shawdodragon...its ok. He sucks.. Me: Stop whinning, like a *****, and play the game! |
| CedricBrooks09-26-06, 02:36 PM | TPK, you said everything I've been thinking about these threads, and because of that I have nothing to say. |
| Cold Napalm09-26-06, 03:10 PM | Personally at this point, I think jade, shadow and their DM are dumb. Jade and shadow for their PvP tendecy and the DM because he seems to not be able to balance squat...oh yeah lets give the quarky munchkin wannabe vampire a magic item that lets him ignore the sun and epic abilities because THAT'S a good idea?!? Honestly, if I was shadow, I'd leave the game and be done with it. Jade and the DM obviously have some cohooting they do and the DM is rather obviously playing favorites (or is an utter idiot in either case a good reason to leave). |
| kelvinaw27309-26-06, 05:23 PM | This is a fundamental problem of a DM trying top please everybody: One player wants a way-out race for his character, with odd powers and drawbacks. Once this is done, said player now has a problem with his drawbacks being a hindrence to party unity and team performance. Other players then feel curtailed in the use of their own abilities and feel that they have to bend unfairly around that character. Answer: 1) DMs cannot always please everybody 2) If you want a character with unusual advantages and drawbacks, it it YOUR responsibility to make sure your character can work with the rest of the party - not theirs, not the DMs. 3) If your character requires the rest of the party conform to a certain pattern, make sure you have their agreement before you do it (this can apply to Paladins in parties not agreed to be all-good, for example, or Dread Necromancers in parties not agreed to be all-evil or whatever). |
| SokenzanMarauder09-26-06, 05:33 PM | From now on if Shadowdragon or Jadefox posts on one of these 'pity me' threads. I'm going to randomly kill one of the following: http://www.hemmy.net/images/animals/cuteanimal01.jpg http://www.innocentenglish.com/cute-animals/cute-moving-puppy-8.gif http://www.ashtonusa.com/animal9.jpg http://lidiaandvicky.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/cute-animal-05.jpg Honestly, you're acting like children. I pray you aren't adults so that this behavior isn't insulting to the whole adult age group. -Gene |
| DarkRhystar09-26-06, 05:34 PM | Funny how so much drama could have been avoided had everyone talked about what they wanted beforehand and made their characters together. I take that back. It's more sad than funny. |
| Reversefigure409-26-06, 11:38 PM | It's at about this point the DM should declare "The gods grow weary of your squabbling. Both your characters keel over and die. No save. Roll 4d6." |
| Aeromus09-27-06, 12:12 AM | It's at about this point the DM should declare "The gods grow weary of your squabbling. Both your characters keel over and die. No save. Roll 4d6." More like old school. "Roll 3d6 straight down, no rerolls." |
| Chainsaw09-27-06, 12:51 AM | Your vampire friend is cheating and you are whining to us like we can do something about it. If you are unable to resolve the situation between you, you need to be mature about it and leave the game. There will be other games to play your cleric. |
| Nate Jones09-27-06, 02:28 AM | TPK, you are my hero. One might even say your are my sun god, and I am your angsty, juvenile servant who derives an unnatural, carnal pleasure from proving that he has the largest e-**** on the Wizards Message Boards, but I think that might be carrying the analogy a bit too far. |
| anshar09-27-06, 04:20 PM | I feel compelled to point out here that ShadowDragon8685 has been very quiet since Sunday night. It seems that he lost interest in his thread when the boards lost sympathy for his position. I also find it amusing that given how strongly he feels about his anti-undead abilities as a RSoP that he chose to practice necromancy and raise the old thread from the dead. :D |
| green_yawgmoth09-27-06, 07:36 PM | ^^^ Thread necromancy isn't 3 days. Thread necromancy is dredging up threads from 6+ months ago. I'm hopping on the "you're all idiots, shut up and play in different games with DMs that will felate you and your characters exactly how you wish, since that's what you both obviously want" camp. Shadow, if the game/DM is so unreasonable, leave. Jade, stop being a munchkin. DM, don't try to fix things without talking to both players. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/yawgmoth/kittyjig.gif |
| ShadowDragon868509-27-06, 07:44 PM | Actually, I've been quiet since, after that game in which the DM yelled at me... *reads back to quote his old post.* Well, I talked with the DM after the game, with JadeFox out of the picture. I think I successfully communicated my displeasure to him that JadeFox was getting to play an overpowered race and getting a free ride past it's drawbacks. I explained as such to the DM. The DM said he was going to have a chat with JadeFox tomorrow, and I suggested we turn him from a Vampire into a Deathless. In any event... We'll see. We will see... After this post, the DM got some sleep, and we got a chance to talk honestly, without trying to do that whole "The Game must go On, gorram it!" thing, and I got a chance to explain to the DM why I felt it was unfair for Jade to have abilities that not even a LICH can have. And I also explained how I was concerned that JadeFox was hoodwinking him about the sunlight thing. He said he'd talk to Jade. I don't know what the topic of that conversation was, but after that, he said that he had decided to make Jade make a new character. There. Problem solved in-group, I've griped and vented here while hoping someone has a good, equitable soloution that I can show to my DM. On the Wings of TPK made several incindiary posts and attacks on my person, but very few people made useful or even non-argumentative commentary. This was a person making some, by the way: There was a interesting TV series that lasted 7 years. It had a spin off that lasted 5. The main character was a vampire hunter. Until you both get over the my-character-is-best-syndrome, you are going to have problems. First off, Buffy was a whining ***** without a holy mandate. Secondly, Angel was a somewhat cool character, at least. He knew what he was and he had no bones about it. He was a bit morose, a bit hero, a bit monster. However, what he was not, was a Jack Russel ****ing Terrier, which is about how I can most adequately describe the character that Jax made. Really, guys. Try an image Angel bouncing up and down HAPPY at having joined the ranks of the Damned and climbing up walls for fun and basically exemplarizing the best of the worst of vampire pouser "Oh my god, I can do all this stuff, I'm so COOL, can't you see how cool I am? Come here, you can bask in how cool I am." stuff. Nor was he immune to the sun just because he had clothes that covered his skin (in fact, his clothes burned with him). Anyway, people. The issue has been RESOLVED. The DM decided that he didn't like Jax's character, Jax is making a new one. I'm going to leave it between them, since the DM told me he was going to carefully look over this one before approving it - that's good enough. If it turns out Jax is making a Revenge character or something.... Well, you'll hear from me again. :P |
| Bob Loblaw09-27-06, 08:35 PM | He said he'd talk to Jade. Anyway, people. The issue has been RESOLVED. You are both very strong willed, and I have a feeling we will see more issues in the future. I hope you are both able to put aside your differences for the sake of the game (it sounds like you want to, but are unsure of Jax). As for my suggestion, it wasn't the best I know. I was just showing that it can be made to work. Funny thing about Angel, he actually had the chance to be immune to everything and gave it up for the sake of redemption. He wanted to do it the hard way. It doesn't sound like that was Jax's concept. I could be wrong since I don't know that much about the character. A very strange thing about the Buffyverse vampires that I had never really thought about until now: a coat would only protect you from the sun when you weren't wearing it. If you held it over your head, you would be a little warm, but okay. If you covered your skin completely with clothing, then you would light up like a 1970's christmas tree. Very strange... |

The rodent can die :). |
| WizO_Cat09-27-06, 10:46 PM | Ok, just a couple of items: 1) Let's keep the posts on the subject of the thread and not other guests. Negativity towards other guests is not going to be toleraed on the boards. 2) Let's keep the examples in general terms: no more "calling other guests out" in examples. We really do need to know who the guest is in particular in order to figure out how to address an issue. If we do, then it is neede on the boards. Thanks. |
