Diferent chalenges give you diferent amounts of xp(experience) for overcoming hem. Once you get enough experience, your character goes up a level.

certainly...just how do you go about assigning xp to challenges? is there any system or can the dm have you level up off a twig blight or perhaps 1000?

There is a pretty decently-sized section in the DMG about how much xp encounters of a certain level are worth for characters of certain leveels, though many DMs also give out ad hoc XP, and that is covered a little bit as well.

For defeating monsters and overcoming traps, it's easy. CR vs. character's level / party size translates directly into experience points. Assigning XP to challenges that don't have a set CR can be trickier. In general, if overcoming the challenge exausted approximately 20% of the party's resources (spells, hit points, etc.), you can assign it a CR equal to the party's average level and award experience as above. The more exausting a task, the higher the compensation should be. If a party comes up with a clever idea to complete the task eaiser or manages their resources more efficiently than expected they shouldn't recieve less of an xp award. Likewise, if a party makes unwise decisions (not bad dice rolls) and makes the encounter harder on themselves, they shouldn't recieve extra compensation (hopefully they will be "sadder but wiser" by the end).

If a DM wants a PC to "level up quickly" it's usually better to just create the caracter at a higher level if it is a new character. The XP system is set up so that a lower-level character will "catch up" to the higher level characters (unless there is a LARGE gap between the new character's level).
