| Bihlbo07-03-07, 03:21 AM | This badger was Awakened and began taking levels of monk. Awakened Badger, Monk 8 Small Magical Beast Hit Dice 11d8+22 (71 hp) Initiative +4 Speed 50 ft., burrow 10 ft. Armor Class 16 (+1 size, +4 Dex, +1 monk AC bonus) Base Attack/Grapple +8/+8 Attack +13 something Full Attack ? Space/Reach 5 ft./5 ft. Special Attacks Rage Special Qualities Low-light vision, scent, monk abilities Saves Fort +5, Ref +7, Will +2 Abilities Str 10, Dex 18, Con 14, Int 12, Wis 12, Cha 8 Skills Escape Artist +20, Listen +13, Sense Motive +9, Spot, +13, Tumble +12 Feats Agile, Combat Reflexes, Improved Natural Attack (claws), Improved Trip, Improved Two-Weapon Fighting, Stunning Fist, Track, Two-Weapon Fighting, Weapon Finesse Skills: A badger has a +4 racial bonus on Escape Artist checks. ---- My question is this: how does this badger-monk attack when making a full attack action? Badger Attacks: 2 claws and bite Unarmed Attacks: +13/+8 or +11/+6/+11/+6 using "off-hand" attack (Improved Two-Weapon Fighting) Improved Natural Attack: Claw damage up to 1d3 Unarmed Strike (monk ability): Unarmed strike 1d8 I at first thought that he would do either "unarmed strikes" (though mostly indistinguishable from claw attacks) for +11/+6/+11/+6 or 2 claws +13 and bite +8, but not combine the two. Then upon looking at the monsters in the MM and thinking about it harder, I think the claw attacks would become the unarmed strikes. This would mean the monk's unarmed strike damage bonus would apply to the bite and claw attacks and the character could make attacks that deal either piercing and slashing (claw) or bludgeoning (other body parts) damage. This would also mean that the Improved Natural Attack feat applying to his claw attack raises the damage from 1d8 to 2d6. This would also mean the character gets to combine all attacks, as follows. ("any" in the following means either using the claws or using another body part) +11 (main claw) / +11 (second claw) / +6 (iterative main, any) / +11 (two-weapon attack, any) / +6 (imp. two-weapon, any) / +6 (bite) OR +13 (main claw) / +13 (second claw) / +8 (iterative main, any) / +8 (bite) What's it look like to you all? |
| calronmoonflower07-03-07, 03:33 AM | A badger monk can use flurry of blows to max its unarmed strikes and then follow up with all its natural attacks. This works because a monks unarmed strikes can be done with any body part and natural attacks do not interfere with the flurry of blows. |
| Bihlbo07-03-07, 03:52 AM | Well, for now I'm trying to ignore Flurry. I pretty much grok how that works, and what I'm still not sure of is how the normal attacks work out. |
| Steely_Dan07-03-07, 05:53 AM | Melee unarmed strike +13/+8 and bite +8 or Melee 2 claws +13 and bite +8 or Melee unarmed strike +11/+11/+6 with flurry of blows and bite +6 or Melee unarmed strike +9/+9/+4 with flurry of blows and unarmed strike +9/+4 with Improved Two-Weapon Fighting and bite +6 |
| Bihlbo07-03-07, 10:31 AM | Ignore Flurry of Blows I already know how that works. Why wouldn't it be 2 claws, bite, and normal iterative and off-hand attacks? |
| Steely_Dan07-03-07, 10:47 AM | Why wouldn't it be 2 claws, bite, and normal iterative and off-hand attacks? Like: Melee unarmed strike +11/+6 and unarmed strike +11/+6 and 2 claws +8 and bite +8 Even though you can make an unarmed strike with any part of your body (flurry of buttocks!), gathering from the example in the 3.5 FAQ, you can make 1 claw attack in addition to your main hand attacks, but if you are TWF I don't think you can use any claw attacks. Bites, tentacles, wings, and tails etc are another matter… |
| Far_Traveler07-03-07, 01:14 PM | This is how your attack routine would work Attack: +13 unarmed strike (1d8) or +13 claw (1d3) or +13 bite (?) Full attack: +13/+8 Unarmed Strike (1d8) plus +8 2 claws (1d3) and +8 Bite (?) OR two-weapon fighting +11/+11/+6/+6 unarmed strikes (1d8) plus +6 two claws (1d3) and +6 bite (?) OR flurry of blows +12/+12/+7 Unarmed Strike (1d8) OR flurry of blows Two-weapon fighting +10/+10/+10/+5/+5 unarmed strike (1d8) Rules of thumb: If two-weapon fighting, apply -2 to ALL attacks, including natural attacks. If using flurry of blows, apply -1 to all attacks and natural attacks are prohibited. When using Unarmed strikes, apply -5 penalty to all natural attack and treat them as secondary attacks. Get an amulet of mighty fists pronto! |
