what should a barbs journal look like?

that really depends on a lot of factors - intelligence (duh), wisdom, charisma (your ability to speak convincingly should affect how well you write convincingly)

Generally speaking entries might be short and to the point, without the same flourish as the bard's journal.

Depends on who actually wrote it, since barbarians are illiterate.

Then why is Forgery an (Int) skill?

Then why is Forgery an (Int) skill?

Because forgers are not creative, they just copy very, very well.

Then why is Forgery an (Int) skill?

That probably reflects the effort required to imitate someone else's style of writing -- the actual handwriting, the patterns that tend to show up, word choices, et cetera. A character would have to study (even if it's a five-minute glanceover to figure out just where the 't's are crossed and whether 'i's are dotted) in order to make his work convincing. Charisma doesn't really come into play there.

(Also, barbarians can spend skill points to become literate, so illiteracy is the assumed default but by no means universal.)

Why would they keep one? I don't, and i don't know any one who does. After all if was worth remembering you'd remember it or have a scar or a cool story tell otherwise why bother.

Wizards i can see keeping a journal of thoughts, threoys and so on.

i am keeping one because i am behind on exp. and my dm is going to give me exp.+ for keeping one... and
i think that the cave paintings would be nearest correct.

but if a barb. has a low int. or wis. he might forget something so he would just put the bigger parts into a journal...i guess:confused:

So, you want a journal for the sharp point on a hook, eh? You could try writing about wriggling worms impaled upon you, or the fish that you've caught...

Figures, pictures are a fun way of keeping a journal, mostly just keep a kill count (draw a little picture of what it looks like, needn't be anything more complicated than one of the smilies in the more part) and things that you/your character think is important like statues, half hearted maps and where pretty ladies live the worse the art the better.

I've been considering keeping a "journal" for a barbarian character, too, and had a great suggestion for it.

Rather than literally writing everything down in-game (after all, illiterate), the journal might be more of a written story of what your character did. Better yet, one narrated by the barbarian. It's not a journal he's keeping, it's a story he's telling to eager listeners in a bar. You could end entries on things like

"Aye, lad, then the spiders came. Thousands of 'em there must have been, surrounding us. I drew me axe and made ready for me last stand, but just then Azarmoth finished the spell he'd been prayin' to Pelor for...

And now me's throats dry, and I don't remember so good when I'm parched. Maybe one of you lads could buy me a drink..."

Of course, the story will focus on things the character is interested in. A dwarf barbarian might briefly mention they found 'some old library, or something', when it turns out to be a great collection of lost spellbooks, and then choose to talk about how great the construction of the cave was.

and later on in a camp. you could use stories as means to make gold..

(eg. ill tell you how to kill a dog if you give me 100 gp little girl)

DAY 42: A cunning rescue, derring do and lo, an item of power! (Felleng the Bard)

'Twas a glorious morn as the stalwart heroes ventured into the lair of the fiendish Mind Flayers! Led by the mighty mountain of sinew and steel Thog of the Six Winds, we passed deep into their lair to rescue the fair maiden Tillia. Oh, her honied thighs and pouting mouth, how I wished she were here and not in the grasp of the nefarious and beastly Xrassmus, Lich and servitor of the great wyrm Garthiralx. But today we were prepared for steel and song and fire and blood as we hewed and sang our way to final victory. Hearken to the sound of flashing steel and screaming foes, of foul deeds silenced and of dark tombs uncovered. Aye, it was a victorious and a sweet day and we finally slew and banished Xrassmus to the pits of hell where he will languish for an eternity. (etc)

DAY 42: Operation Blue Sky (Morrick, the fighter)

0800 hours: We entered the area and proceeded to clear it of hostiles.
0110 hours: Target "Xrassmus" neutralised and Objective Items 1-12a appropriated.
0120 hours: Secondary Objective "Tillia" completed.
0210 hours: Minor collateral damage from friendly fire, man down.
0300 hours: Mission accomplished.

Cave Paintings, Eh?

You have given me the best character idea ever!

But on topic, it should be depictions of battles, artistic stuff, or possibly a record of food stores if the tribe has them. Things like that. History and art mostly
