A bard would like to learn more spells [Archive] - Wizards Community

Hey guys, I'm kinda new to the whole D&D experience but I have come a bit out, however, I am stuck on something. I understand that the level progression is what determines how many spells and Sorcerer or a Bard knows, but are there other ways to increase that number without having to increase my stats? From what I was told, in 2nd edition Bard's had spell books much like a wizard, then he could simply steal a wizards spells. It appears that in 3rd, that is no longer allowed.

Anyways, help? Suggestions? Commants?

A bard learns spells according to the Spells Known table, and does not get bonus spells known for high ability score. High ability score only increases spells per day. That said, there is the feat 'Spell Knowledge' I believe, that gives you one extra spell known of up to one less than your highest level. I don't think there is even a limit to what list the spell has to come from, but that might simply be an error.

Taking that feat which allows more spells to be added to your list would be one imperfect solution.

Multiclassing into something that stacks with your Bard but gives more spells is another. Or, Practiced Spellcaster in combination with a class that doesn't directly stack can give you some useful abilities.

Keep in mind that tons of spells are on the bard list, so you can use nearly any spell from any scroll or wand (at least arcane scrolls and wands, but many DMs just ignore the Arcane or Divine origin of spells and look to which lists the spell is on). You also have UMD to use completely any scroll or wand or item.

Many spells won't see that much use in regular play, so wands are good ways to keep that spell in reserve without having to take space on your spells known list. You can possibly find partially depleted wands for less than a new one.

Arcane Disciple from Complete Divine I believe can give you access to a clerical spell Domain much as a cleric. This can be invaluable to sorcerers and Bards.

There's no such thing as an "arcane wand" or a "divine wand." It's just a wand. For example, any character with at least one level in a class with cure light wounds on the spell list can activate a wand of cure light wounds - even if they can't yet cast the spell, such as a 1st level ranger.

You are correct about arcane vs divine scrolls. There the distinction matters.

Ummmm, the heroism spell allows the caster to gain a feat... can you use it to gain extra spell?

Doesn't the feat from heroism need to be on the fighter bonus feat list?

You are correct. Heroism grants the target a fighter bonus feat.

More properly - the fighter gains a bonus feat for the duration of the spell.

First, a correction. The spell that grants you a bonus feat is not Heroism (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/heroism.htm), it's Heroics (SC, Pg113).

More properly - the fighter gains a bonus feat for the duration of the spell.
If we are both talking about Heroics, then no. The target does not need to be a fighter.

Well, wands just store spells so my interpretation was that it stores whichever version of the spell it was created with. I am one of those that doesn't care about the origin of a spell though, so it doesn't matter to my game.

You're correct - wands just store spells. There is no such thing as an arcane wand or a divine wand. So you don't have a house rule; you're using the actual rules.
