A concern [Archive] - Wizards Community

02-22-06, 11:48 PM I am a fairly new player and ever since I wanted to play D&D one thing has be bugging me the entire time. What if I run out of ideas for characters? I currently have 3 characters started and ready to begin a game but I am concerned that after these die I will just end up making and identical character with just a different name or cant decide what I should make next. Have any of you come across this problem if so how did you get over it.

02-22-06, 11:54 PM I have more characters then I will ever play games. Don't worry, there are hundreds of different characters to make.

02-23-06, 07:36 AM just get inspired by the game you're in. Your DM will launch hundreds of friends & foes at you, so you will probably get new ideas. Otherwise, you could look in the PHB at the different classes or you could look in other books (like complete adventurer) for more classes. There is really too much to try it all. :(

02-23-06, 08:25 AM You won't run out of ideas, believe me. As soon as you begin roleplaying, you are going to watch movies, read books and so on in another way. Basically it runs "Hey, that's a cool [trait/concept/idea/skill/weakness] that protagonist has, but I don't like his [insert other thing]. So I'll take this, leave that out and replace it with another thing." Don't copy stuff 1:1 (no first-level Gandalfs...), but get inspired by stuff.
At least, that's the way I do it...

02-23-06, 10:28 AM With time, you will learn that the personality is the biggest difference between PCs. Even if you have had 10 dwarf fighters before, the 11th one could be lazy, drinks elf wine, and fights with a quarterstaff. he also collects butterflys in his spare time.

As long as you dont make carbon copys, they wont be carbon copys. There is an unlimeted number of personalitys out there. You will never run out.

02-23-06, 07:22 PM So you end up playing the same character twice- big deal! If that's what makes the game fun, so be it. And if the DM complains, tell him to quit killing your character :)

I doubt you'll run out of ideas

02-23-06, 07:54 PM That's really a minor concern, when you think about it. I wouldn't worry too much about that. I'm sure as you play you'll get to see other people's ideas of characters and even encounter characters that you'd never thought of, but would like to try.

If you're still worried, just read some books and watch some movies. Eventually you'll come across something different that you'd like to build.
