A DM hating manoevrability.. [Archive] - Wizards Community

I'm always quite enthralled when I see spells like "fly" and "spider climbing", the warlock invocations like "fel flight" and the one that gives you spiderclimbing seem very fun to me.
The feat"Up the Walls" in expanded psionics seems like a fun and easy way to broaden your combat, and even roleplaying, horizons while the wings you sprout from this or that prestige class are *absolutely* the ultimate reward.

Yet I have a DM who turns green and nearly throws up at the bare mention of these spells.Although he has used spider climbing himself a few times when he was playering and I was DMing, and he doesn't seem to mind a character being able to use that for a few minutes each day, every kind of manoevrability that goes a bit beyond that gets a big "no no" from him almost instantly.
Especially the ones that are permanent like wings, invocations, feats, and so on, now I personally find that these are part of why you play things like D&D... does anyone really want to play it just to be restriced to a walking life like you are IRL?(in real life)
His mean argument.. and only argument is "OMG, if you have that you can just get past all me superb obstaclzz and trapzzz"... woohoo, I can get past clumsily designed obstacles(what d&d villain wouldn't include the fact PCs can and have access to these spells in their traps?) and leave the party behind.. yay.

Is there anyone here who can give me some tips/arguments I could use to handle this, because I would really like to get this huge restriction out of the world.
Thanks in advance

It's exceedingly difficult to get past a DM's irrationally held belief.

Good luck.:evillaugh

Well, I DM for the same group myself and while he generally watches over the "rolling of stats" closely and frowns when my optimized character manages to kill the NPC villian that was ment to escape ("mwhahaha"), I generally just keep it relaxed.. as long as the PCs think it's all fine and it's not too crazy, why not?

In fairness, a lot of DMs don't like these abilities because it is a royal pain in the butt to handle 3 dimensional combat in D&D. Unless someone developed a really cool 3d battlemat that I'm unaware of.

Those adjustable retort stands used for chemistry that can be adjusted to any height and grip things are great as long as you have one per flying character.

As soon as people start flying/running up walls/jumping 300 feet in the air, I just throw out the battlemap.

If the characters have unlimited mobility, it becomes that much harder for the DM to make his campaigns.

Ok, there's a goblin camp up ahead...

We fly over it and blast it

There's a city...

Players:Fly and blast

Dm:The BBEG's stronghold...

Players:Death from above!!!!!

Many monsters can't do freaking thing about flying enemies.
Most obstacles can be avoided by flying.

If the party has to actually walk on foot it's much easier for the DM to make encounters and other challenges.

One or two out of a party is usualy not so bad. A full party, major pain.

"A mage casts dispel magic/windwall/reverse gravity, you take 15D6 falling damage and land in the middle of them."
Problem solved.
(Obviously, you should let your characters use their powers a good bit, but if they are just solving every problem like that, there are solutions.)

Your DM is within his rights to hate those things. His explanation is honest. To him, these abilities destroy the FEEL of the campaign world. Just accept it and move on. That's small stuff.

As someone pointed out earlier, some abilities just beg the players to cheese-out the encounters.
