A DM who needs to know what players want most... [Archive] - Wizards Community

As the title says, I need the help of some players... but not mine. If you play in the game with PANUKE CITY do not read further. Ok. Goodie. I thought of going to the GM board, but they might be too careful not to 'break the game'. what I wanted to know is this... If your GM would let you make ANY magic item you wanted... What would it be? There is a necromancer NPC in my game who has been locked in the crypt of a lich for 6 months now. The lich was destroyed long ago, but it's endless arcane resources were not. He has been making entertaining magical items like Decanter of Endless Booze, and glass that give him x-ray vision, mind reading, scry abilities and see invisibility. Among other things. I'm looking for fairly light-hearted things, but they need not be balanced. Even just an idea for it would be grand. My players will get to use many of these - especially the Decanter of Endless Booze. Well, have fun designing random magical items and not worrying about how much they cost. I need help, seriously. I'm already dry on ideas.

First off, I love the Decanter of Endless Booze.

If these PCs have a capitalistic bone in their body, they will IMMIDEATELY launch a tavern. This might be fun to base 'adventures' around, or it might be merely a 'drop in every six months and collect the proceeds' thing.

In either event, I guess the Decanter of Endless Booze will do things like dispense the requested liquid?

It could also be a funny town festival event wherein they flood the streets with beer and have a day of drunken debauchery.

What else would I make? Hmmm...

[Edit]

For added fun, have the NPC wizard on the verge of leveling up when the players bust him out. Have him make them wait ten minutes while he gets to the next level.

A magical gaming system. Have 'adventures' from the comfort of your own (conjured) easy-chair. Now hooked up to the big 7-foot crystal ball..

heres one for you, a crystal ball that allows you to see up to 30 minutes in the past, anywhere you have been before.
basically like scrying the past.
how about guantlets that grant a +1d6 percing damage per hit, but have needles on the inside that deal 1d4 percing to you everytime you use em
i think i might actually make those, they sound cool
a spellbook, but instead of having spells (that they see) it just insults the reader in whatever lang. they can read. have it be like a low lvl spellbook with some kind of warding or something, i cant think of the right word
shirkins of massive pain!!!! deal 2d4 damage on hit, and emit a sonic sound damage of 1d4 for every 20 feet thrown
just some foolish stuff one might make for no reason except to keep themselfs entertained

I like the shurikens of pain, or their effect anyway. I also like the idea of an annoying spellbook. And the magical gaming station, that has a certain ring to it I really like, and the inventor-mage-thing they meet later on will definetly have that. I'll post the precise stats for the Decanter of Endless Booze later on, right now there is pressing business I must attend to.

Many of these are not my original ideas (which will be noted as AtMO). One from other sources will be noted if I remember, but here you go:

1) A ring that lets you pronounce any curse, but that curse is turned upon the user. Hah BBEG you cannot harm an innocent again also makes the player not able to hurt a non-innocent again. The ring makes sure the curse has equal effects on both. (old Dragon magazine)

2) A ring that lets the player change into a new outfit with a command word. (same article as above--bazaar of the bizaare)

3) A ring that makes a person super charitable. It cannot be removed and the person believes every sucker story until they give everything they own away. (Yes, even the clothes on their back). The only way it can be remove is if someone asks for the ring (and gives a sob story). The owner of the ring is compelled to put it on immediately. (same article)

4) A 15 ft pole of pole vaulting. Lets users jump over any barricade. (AtMO)

5) Portable magic lab. Think portable hole but filled with material required for making magic items and special items (e.g. thunderstones) of all types. (AtMO)

6) Improved Portable hole, just like a regular portable hole but it has shelves and can't be pierced accidentally. (from a crazy DM who ran a one shot but could not define what made it "improved" and supplied with (AtMO) magic)

7) Bow of infinite magic powers, it can have any improvement from the DMG and can be changed from round to round as a free action but he user must pay the full (or some fraction) XP cost for each change. It holds each change until a new one is set). I suppose this could work with any weapon, armor or shield. (AtMO)

8) The AnyWeapon (tm), this stick can as a standard action be turned into any other non magical but masterwork weapon the user has previously seen (AtMO).

9) Noose of flying, put it around your neck and the noose pulls you up. You can fly until you fall unconsious at which time the noose drops you from the current height. (AtMO)

10) Ring of Range (or gloves on range), increases the range of any attack by one more increment. Makes a spell go just that much further, makes a bow show one more range increment, lets you throw that dagger a few more feet, lets you threaten five more feet out. (AtMO)

Ok thats all for now, my wife is requesting some (AtMO) magic.

- Wand of Prestidigitation, with infinite charges(just to get rid of all the lich dust in there :D )
- The 'Skull-brusher'. "Give your skull some extra glance!"
- Skeleton Magazine Motion Picture Set. For all you lonely 'guys' out there, who like people with 'less weight'.

And now for the items for the more common users:

- The 'Red Dragon Tosti Maker'. Ensures to make your tosti's roasted in just 5 seconds.
- Some kind of a game like Warhammer with miniatures that are in fact magically diminished people/monsters, alive ones.
- Iron Golem cleaning lady. With prestidigitation breath attack.
- "Bigby's Massage Hand"-chair.
- Reversed Gravity Boots.

Ehm, that's it for now :D

oooh, I like the warhammer game one. *jots down notes*

01-14-05, 12:38 PM
crossbow of backfire
bow of stinging (when fired it does 1d4 extra damage to target and 1d3 subduel damage to you)
neclace of hunger (make the wearer always wanna eat)
ring of corruption (makes a good char evil and vise versa)
retractable great sword (looks like a small mw dagger when weilded by a small char, greatsword for a med ect..)
salve of many rashes (cure hp damage but causes your skin to turn colors where aplied)
quill of blood (does not require ink, but you take 1d4 hp damage per page written, the ink is your blood of course)
iron pot of food (when water is added and boiled it becomes enough stew to serve a party of 12 med creatures, or 4 medium creatures and 4 large)
spellbook of replacement (allows you to replace the gold cost for items in a spell for hp at a 2gp to 1hp cost)

just a few more for you to consider

Various 1/day summoning items. He can have fun summoning things and having them attack each other. Gladiator pits without the problem of feeding gladiators.
A lot of candles that never burn down, light or extinguish with a command word. It's like the Clapper :D
Cover the walls with Arcane calculations written with shimmering arcane marks.
More later, have to go to class.

Not strictly what I would want, but what I might want if I played certain character types.

Bracers of Mighty Might : 1/day +20 enhancement bonus to Str for 1 round (just like Strength domain power at level 20)

Ring of Masterful Fluid Evasion: 1/day +20 insight bonus to AC versus 1 attack. May be activated by wearer in response to any attack, without using any action (just like Deflect Arrow for example). The activation must be declared before the roll is made.

Boots of Booting: Can be used to attack (damage 1d3 for medium, 1d2 for small, plus Str bonus as normal; just like normal unarmed damage but lethal and doesn't provoke AoO). Allows wearer to make additional attack with a boot, but all attacks in round suffer -2 penalty.
(just like Flurry of Blows, but extra attack has to be with boot).

Cloak of Cloaking: When wrapped around the body, makes wearer invisible (as per Invisibility spell).
(basically Ring of Invisibility in different form)

Shortsword of Stabbity Death: +1 Shortsword that grants +2d6 Sneak Attack damage, or increases Sneak Attack by that amount if wielder already has it.

Figurine of Wondrous Power: Jade Elf
As other wondorous figurines, this one changes into creature on command.
This particular one changes into female elf (1st level Warrior, stats as default in MM). It can be used up to only once per week, for up to 8 hours. It is unclear why, but the creator seemed to forgot to include any equipment...

Galbela
This bow looks quite strange, since it doesn't have any string. However if wielder attempts to draw the bow, he feels like it was there (although very soft), and an arrow of pure energy appears ready to shoot.
Shots from the bow don't require any arrows and are ranged touch attacks with range of 400ft (no range increments). It deals 2d6+3 force damage on hit.

Some other ideas (not necessarily what anybody could want):

Quaal's Feather Token: Feathery Feather
When tossed into air, it becomes Huge, 10 meters large feather (if there is enough room), that falls down at the rate of 10ft per round, until it falls on the firm ground. As much as 2000lb can be placed on the feather without any effect on it's descent (althrough note that you have to place that load on the fly, since before tossing, it's just a small token). If more is loaded, the feather disappears, just as it does when it lands on firm ground.

Seed of Eden
If put into ground, it dissolves, almost immediately causing sudden growth of all plant life within 60ft. Grass grows and becomes emerald green, flowers bloom, butterflies attend the beautiful place just created. In 24 hours, the area starts to revert to it's normal form, the magic sustaining the local paradise no longer at work.

The Ring of Hear Smell. You hear smells and smell sound. This way you are completely immune to silence spells.

A supply of lots of quests! YAY!!!

-Decanter of Endless Booze: He already has this.
-Figurine of Wondrous Power (Jade Elf): This was stolen by bandits. He wants it back, it would fetch a nice price on the market.
-Wand of Prestidigitation: This has been sealed in a room filled with mephits. they like it, and won't give it up peacefully.
-Spectacles of Grand Sight: These glasses give him the ability to see through illusions and invisibility, as well as x-ray vision. These are locked in a room with a BUNCH of zombies.

These are my favorite so far. I like the other ones too, but only feel like typing a few. Keep 'em coming, you're going to make one group of players very, vary happy.

Remember guys; just because they're odd items doesn't mean they have to be cursed- I've been seeing a lot of them in the lists here. :)

In any case, here's a couple of thoughts.

Intelligent Paintings - paintings with people inside who are intelligent, and perfectly capable of holding a conversation. The NPC didn't have any friends, so he made some.

Animated Objects of all kinds, probably. See above.

Bottle Demons - shadowy creatures trapped in a bottle. Once the bottle is broken, they break free, and wreak havoc wherever they land; either on the thrower or the target.

As much fun as it'd be to hand the PCs some swords, I don't think a wizard would spend his time making them, particularly without a forge or a blacksmith to help out. Ditto for armor and that sort of stuff. Unless, of course, the lich's treasury included them beforehand...

How about the "Ring of Frost"
On command, it casts ray of frost on what the wearer is holding. Your drink will always be cold!

Well not sure if you asking me what I would like, or what useless magic I would create while I was stuck in the crypt.

Crystal Ball with Illusion powers but focused to a particualr aspect. Like it projects an illusion of a harem of women with full effects.

Deck of cards that plays any game with you with a INT of 18 and will shuffle and deal. An evil version could could bet on and win money but becareful it cheats!

Deck of Illusions with mixed signals on it, like Dragon card would summon a kender instead and he would annoy and steal from you. (using some other knowledge instead dont think kenders exist in DnD).

Cursed Wand of Wonder, that makes any spell the wizard knows fire off randomly.

Cursed Sword of Banding, when the weilder tried to stike with the weapon it goes rubbery and bounces off the target with such force it snaps back and attacks the user with a + bonus.

thats should be enough...

As magic items I loved for my PC's, I always loved it when my DM would create unique magic items and they had names and such. But that was 2nd edition mainly where item creation was quite a bit more difficult and costly so you pretty much had to stick with what you found. in 3.XE DnD, there is no real limit on what you can create at all.

Pants of Monster Summoning.

There is nothing cooler than pulling a monkey out of your pants of command. After giving it a good spanking, it just vanishes like that. Good, somewhat clean fun for everyone.

Other good summoning ideas:

Large Viper
Crabs of Various Sizes
Stone Giant
Suckerfish (need water available, or else its just cruel)
Half Elf

If I was a necro planning on making something, I'd make a Rod of Undead Mastery. x2 my limit on controlling undead? Yes please. :D

Stapler of Shutting Up: Make a touch attack to permanently staple the enemy's mouth shut. Great against bards. :D

Decanter of Endless Oil of Impact. Use with extreme caution.

Decanter of Endless (potion of whatever). "What do you MEAN, I haven't finished the potion yet?!"

Florin's Fractal Fabricator. Uses simple arcane equations to create infinitely complex 3D images, which can be enlarged and shrunk (zoom in/out) at the viewer's will. That'd keep me quiet for hours.

The Wand of Mastication--Whenever a PC makes a crude joke (possibly relating to the name of the item), the wand's tip splits to form a pair of pearly whites, then leaps to his current position and makes a bite attack on him. Would probably have to have some other minor magical properties to make it worth keeping around long enough to watch the action.

Hairball of Ingestion--Could be mistaken for any random hairball but for the magic glow. This magic item gives the PC the dexterity score of a panther (or other cat of choice), but for the bonus to activate the Hairball of Ingestion must actually be ingested. The PC must make a reflex save (DC 15) every round to avoid coughing it up and losing the effect.

Ninja in a Bottle--I give full credit to Mastermind020 for this one. This small vial unsuspectingly contains a very powerful warrior inside it. When uncorked, a thick cloud of smoke erupts from the bottle and a ninja appears. The ninja makes an attack at the nearest enemy, bows to the wielder, and returns to his bottle. The ninja may be summoned once a day.

Sheet of the Seen Unseen Servant - It is a plaing white bedsheet that when unfolded into the air, appears to drape over an unseen servant. This is no ordinary unseen servant, it has infinite uses of prestidigitation and can perform more complicated commands. It also has the ability to prepare a hero's feast once per day. The casting time is one hour, and it requires 1 ration or the equivilent per 2 people being served. The servant can be dismissed by tugging on one of the sheet corners.

It can also cast cause fear at will, by saying 'boo!'

If I were playing a melee class, I would want a weapon that did full damage against everything. Something that would ignore any DR as well as corporeal status would be a good start. Adding critical damage to creatures normally immune to such would be a Fighters' dream come true.
