A fun idea I came up with [Archive] - Wizards Community

So, as a result of a random comment I made over in the Races forum I came up with an interesting idea for a cool roleplay option for a character.

First, create a scrocerer. Regular run of the mill scorcerer. Make sure he has a low int and low to average wis. I'm thinking in the range of 6 int and 8 wis. Keep a decent cha, whatever you can get.

Secondly, give him a familiar. and make it a Raven. Your Raven will start off at 6 Int and speak a single language, and be smarter than your scorcerer.

Now, play the character entirely as normal, except instead of playing as the Scorcerer, you play as... the familiar.

Imagine the humor of playing as this exasperated bird, growing increasingly intelligent as you try and manage your bumbling absent minded Scorcerer to glory. As an added bonus, give your raven a cool name like "Darkfeather" and your Scorcerer a really plain name, like "Steve".

"No Steve! Put the rock down! Yes I realize it's shiny but we have more important things to do. Ok, fine you can keep the rock, just... just put it away and cast True Seeing for the love of Mystra!"

Plus, because your scorcerer has such a high Charisma, he'd have this weird sense of awe and destiny around him, despite being dumb as two bags of hammers. It'd be a Forest Gump effect.

Anyone have any thoughts on how to make this even more amusing?

This is hilarious. I would love to do that in a group if I knew they wouldn't immediately kill me. :)

If you were an intelligent magic item no one would throw you away. You would be worthy of pity if you were created by a god or gold dragon or some other wondrous being then you're reduced to being used by FERD THE UNWASHED,he treats you without respect and you can't fly away like the raven and if you're good aligned you won't try to dominate him? :)

Been done before. Admittedly with a psicrystal, and over time rather than from the beginning, but done before.

And then the idea was actually turned into something mechanically feasable, where the character actually fell into the background in much the same way that most familiars do (i.e. the psicrystal did all the talking, being much smarter than the master).

Here is the original. (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=463152)

Eventually it was redone for the 100^10 Optimization Challenge (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=441877) (go ahead and read those rules -- it's mean). And no, the character didn't enter. The *psicrystal* did. This was the final entry (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=6658934&postcount=140) -- it's a bit short, but combat-effective.

I've run a version of this myself, where the character suffered from a hereditary birth condition similar to (but not quite identical to) Down's Syndrome (reflected as having low stats in everything except Wisdom and Constitution). The psicrystal was the aspect of his mind not bound by his body (Hero personality, natch), and it grew and learned on its own, teaching the character's unconcious form as he slept. The crystal was the mental "big brother" to the character, just as the character would physically look after the gem at lower levels.

The psicrystal DID direct and speak for the character at low levels, having comparable Intelligence. It was kind of interesting.

I'm not sure I would want to play it but I would LOVE to see it done ....
