| barret3b03-22-05, 01:57 AM | I haven't been playing D&D for very long, and our DM just currently threw this daunting task upon us. The setting is Faerun or something like that. I have the PHB and the Complete Warrior for reference. Any suggestions for such high level play would be appreciated. |
| weasel fierce03-22-05, 03:31 AM | You havent been playing very long, and your DM is starting a level 65 game ? Well, basically, at level 65, you are god amongst men. Unless your DM is very very very skilled, the game will be beyond disbelief. |
| anders03-22-05, 04:33 AM | lvl 65 and you'd toss Karsus around on any day. The choosen would be ants under your command and the Gods themselves would fear you. The most "powerful" characters that exist in Faerun at the moment is in the 40-50 range. I strongly suggest you start at lower levels. That said, you really really should read epic levels handbook (describes level 20+ and epic items etc.) even though its 3.0. At a high level you really want a good will save as 65'ish wizards will be able to generate spells with ridiculus saving throws. |
| The_Dark_One03-22-05, 04:43 AM | Maybe you should find out if you're allowed to play an actual god? Divine Rank is a wonderful thing... |
| barret3b03-22-05, 06:52 AM | I'll be sure to ask. Without the book, are there any Deities online or classes online that benefit alot from very high levels? The only one I can think of so far is Rage Mage...... |
| Serious Games Only03-22-05, 06:57 AM | Dont play I this game, epic games are so retared, this one is hyper epic and made me throw up a bit in the back of my throught when reading it. |
| Thorak03-22-05, 07:45 AM | There should be a rule in the DMG suggesting, strongly, that you never ever ever start a game Epic. I'd even go so far as to say never starting a game higher than 10th level. Because you miss out on too much. It's like buying a video game, and level-warping to the last level every time you play. Sure, you can, but you're missing out on most of the game. |
| barret3b03-22-05, 09:11 AM | Well, after probing a bit, I found out that we are going to have two sets of characters, one normal and one mega-epic. The latter's actions strongly effecting the normal characters. Thats the gist of it. I have never done anything like this so I will have to wait and see. What I really wanted to do was make an Orlandu type character from FFT, or a Druid/Sorcerer type character. Does anyone know of any references I could use for making Orlandu, kinda had to find anything myself with search down. :weep: |
| Vatras03-22-05, 09:29 AM | Level 65...make a Shadowknight...err, that was Everquest... Well...get a druid 20/sorcerer 5/arcane hierophant 15/incantatrix 10 and put the fear in your DM... |
| green_yawgmoth03-22-05, 11:04 AM | Clr 15/Sorc 6/True Necro 14/mystic theurge 20/pale master 10. Raise an army of undead the likes of which no one has ever seen! :evillaugh http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/yawgmoth/kittyjig.gif |
| Thoronmir03-22-05, 11:33 AM | Where the heck is ShadowDragon and that hammer gun? Here's a DM who's deserved it. |
| Edymnion03-22-05, 01:08 PM | Screw being a god amongst men, most of the gods only have 40-50 levels. If you went Wizard, you would be able to bend most of the gods in the book over the proverbial barrel. If you just want crazy-uber-epic broken though, make sure and take 20 of those levels as Hulking Hurler. Once you hit epic levels, you no longer advance in BAB. Hulking Hurler (or was it War Hulk?) gets not BAB, but gets +2 Str at every level, meaning he does get a pseudo BAB increase. Go for a brute god. 20 levels of Barbarian, 20 levels of Hulking Hurler, and then whatever else you want. You'll be able to out arm-wrestle Kord at that point. |
| Mirikon03-22-05, 01:36 PM | Perchance have you looked at the combo of War Hulk and Hulking Hurler? If not, you should. Another possibility is to play a dragon. A really really old one. |
| eRaz0r03-22-05, 02:06 PM | Try the Character Optimization boards - some of those maniacs will have some ideas for you :D I remember last time someone asked a question like this. I seem to recall something to do with Illithid Savant being a fun suggestion. Apparently they can permanently gain the abilities of the creatures they kill. Also, you could play a race with a high Level Adjustment, because you can easily suck up a few levels and still be really powerful. Of course you could always go Fighter1/Wizard6/DragonSlayer1/Spellsword2/EldritchKnight10/ Any PrC with +1 Caster Level 40/Archmage5 This gives you a BAB of 17 @ 20th level +1 Epic Attack Bonus every two levels starting at 21st level (IIRC). So you get your 4 attacks a round. You also have an arcane caster level of 17+45 = 63. You can ignore some armor penalties and are immune to fear from DS. You can also pick and choose 40 levels of arcane spellcasting PrC which give you extra abilities (Like Initiate of the SevenFold Veil, Mindbender etc). Basically, its such a high level you can pretty much do anything. This is not even an optimized build. It's pretty lame as far as cheesiness at 65th level could get. |
| green_yawgmoth03-22-05, 02:06 PM | Where the heck is ShadowDragon and that hammer gun? Here's a DM who's deserved it. The hammer gun is my creation, thankyouverymuch. :P I even have the smiley for it! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/yawgmoth/smileys/shoothammer.gif http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/yawgmoth/kittyjig.gif |
| Thoronmir03-22-05, 03:15 PM | Sorry GY, no slight was intended. I just hope you're collecting royalties from ShadowDragon ... it seems he references the hammer gun in every response he writes. |
| Stafir Ortnev03-22-05, 03:58 PM | Actually ShadowDragon seems tot hink magic is needed an all that...an epic campain with high magic would seem right up his ally..so I think he'd like it. |
| kliate03-22-05, 04:43 PM | 65 Levels? If you want power - go Wizard. Research epic spells to do the following: 1) Buff yourself (I'm rather fond of the +20/All variety - although you can keep it down if you don't want to suffer the usual backlash damage or if the party lacks additional casters to help fuel such a buff spell) 2) Buff the party (either to a lesser degree, or the same spell as applied to yourself) If you want sheer damage output that doesn't stop - go with the infamous hulking hurler/war hulk...whatever it was combo. If you want shock value, go Cleric. Remain completely competent in the power of your character's Deity, and look up to him/her at all times. |
| Miah03-22-05, 05:17 PM | On the topic of bending deities over the proverbial barrel, I've always been of the mind that it doesnt matter how many levels you gain, you need something special to be truly as powerful or have the ability to harm something of Divine rank. Unless of course your all just talking about defeating the physical manifestation of the Gods Avatar. |
| Arrowhen03-22-05, 05:38 PM | Everyone's got it all wrong with these crazy multiclass/PrC combos. You're playing characters far beyond even the power level of the gods--and we all know there's only one thing more powerful than the gods... Yup, that's right. A 65th level Bard with maxed-out Bluff and Diplomacy will have the DM eating out of the palm of his hand. |
| eRaz0r03-22-05, 08:00 PM | Hmm - that's not a bad idea : 55 levels of Bard, with 10 levels of Sublime Chord in the mix somewhere. 9th level spells, Inspire Courage at +12 :) And Diplomacy at 58 ranks + modifiers :D hehe. I still think anything with lots of Wizard levels is the key... |
| Christman03-22-05, 08:18 PM | Well... Sorcerer 20, focusing on Enchantment and Transmutation spells Psion 20, Telepath Cerebremancer 10 Metamind 10 Random class 5 Now you basically have a random spellcaster of doom. Go forth and make the peoples fall down. |
| Deekin03-22-05, 09:17 PM | No, no Try Half-Dragon, Half-Half-Oger Barb10/Warhulk 55 Grab a Greatsword and start killing lesser gods in one hit! |
| pseudonyms03-23-05, 01:49 AM | Why not go Mystic Theurge? It be like having Wizard 62/Cleric 62 or something ridiculous like that. Toss in a crazy level adjustment template, and you're still like 60/60. |
| Wizard03-23-05, 02:51 AM | Well...a basic build of that type---wiz5/clr5/theurge55, would get you wiz32/clr32...not so hot. |
| diehardman2203-23-05, 08:08 AM | 65 levels? I have been playing 1 character every game for the past 10 years (I know thats stupid) and i have just reached 40th level and you are going to start at 65? Well I can only say that that is ALOT of time planing feats, checking spells, counting skills, and taking ability scores! But I do seggest if you want to go massive combat use 10 levels in fighter 10 levels in black guard 10 levels in rogue 10 levels in cleric 20 levels in barbarian and 5 levels in Sorc for that extra boost of power when fighting enemies in trees. |
| Feriin03-24-05, 06:44 AM | Screw being a god amongst men, most of the gods only have 40-50 levels. | Feriin03-24-05, 06:51 AM | Well...a basic build of that type---wiz5/clr5/theurge55, would get you wiz32/clr32...not so hot. You're mistaken it would be 60wiz/60clr. |
| ShadowDragon868503-24-05, 07:56 AM | By level 65... There's really little point. You're not playing Dungeons & Dragons anymore. You're playing Sim God. Because, really, at those levels... You *are* Gods. You're shaping reality to your whim, and watching the ants running around and have fun going down and kicking kobolds around by breathing at them..... Yeah, why do I get the feeling this DM is fresh out of Final Fantasy and in desperate need of a hammer gun?... Actually, I don't think the ordinary hammer gun is sufficient ordinance in this case... *begins crafting a Sledgehammer Bazooka.* |
| Starmage2103-24-05, 08:00 AM | You're mistaken it would be 60wiz/60clr. actually, it is you who are mistaken. The epic Mystic Theurge is totally gimped. Your caster progression becomes staggered so that at even levels you get an arcane spell bump, and at odd levels you get a divine bump. |

Then why the hell wouldn't you just alternate levels of cleric and wizard, thus getting bonus wiz feats and turn/rebuke enhancement!?!? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/yawgmoth/kittyjig.gif |
| AramilWindwalker03-24-05, 04:08 PM | nevermind |
| Tyus Kanan03-24-05, 06:09 PM | hmmm... hey ask your DM if you can do a Gestalt campaign :) and, are there like REALLY prestigious classes? ;) |

| Rellik Laires03-25-05, 02:59 AM | but honestly if i were u i would just throw the characer sheet at ur dm and tell him i'm not playing because 65th level is to farly insane and it would take me a weekend just to create the charter and i am a very advanced player (well then again if i was 65th level i would just be too damn insane lool i would have feats u would never hear of i would have a will save as high as my ac i would be a wizard with a strength of an 8th levle orc barbarian in rage i would have spells that are level 10 i would use fireballs as matchs i would be the leader of 90 lands i wouldn't need a spell book because it would all be stored in my head and i would be able to cast em on the fly i would buy troops just to play chess with them i would be able to levitate a large castle with my mind and with out casting a spell i would use a turasque as my mount and after he gets old and withered i will eat him for breakfast in on bite then i would buy a great wurm red dragon as my mount i wouldn't sleep i would be invincable) on top of that i must say if ur dm were to start u off at lvl 65 u would either have to be immortale or die the next session of old age... |

Somewhere whomever was in charge decided the Mystic Theurge was too powerful, and gimped the epic progression. Eh. I'd rather get better class abilites than a bunch of epic feats, especially at that level. There's a point when you just don't need any more feats. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/yawgmoth/kittyjig.gif |
| Jodjod03-26-05, 03:39 AM | As much as I detest high fantasy, high magic campaigns...how freakin' cool would it be to be a god among gods? I'd either go for the above mentioned super-necro or a dragon of some kind....maybe a combination of the two. :D |

| The nameles one03-26-05, 10:01 AM | Of course you could always go Fighter1/Wizard6/DragonSlayer1/Spellsword2/EldritchKnight10/ Any PrC with +1 Caster Level 40/Archmage5 More fun if: Fighter -> Paladin Wizard -> Sorcerer |
| TinManFan03-26-05, 10:48 AM | Ok, Play a Wizard 10/Incantrix 43 Lich (4LA) - Demilich (8LA). Sure levelwise yer a little behind, but, oh yeah, YOU CAN SUCK OUT PEOPLE'S SOULS! Also, if you like a supporting role, there's this PrC in Savage Species for a Harpy Bardlike thing. After you hit 20 levels (From it's Monster Dice and PrC) take 45 levels of Bard. Or, for loads of fun, Play a Dwarven Fighter. Take the normal trees of feats with the bonus feats and take "Roll With It" (Altho Complete Warrior might have a newer 3.5 name for getting 2/- DR)for your normal feats at every 3 levels. Then when ya hit Epic, take the Epic Dmg Reduction. You could stand up to a Dragon whackin you for full attack and yawn in its face. As for Godhood, I don't reccomend it. The game grinds to a halt cause DMs need to find things that can hurt you and get by all your immunities. Even the Hecatoncheires can get taken down easy. Attack it, get the rogue to a point where he's flanking it and SA for loads of dice. Have a beholder looking down on it so it can't use it's magic swords thing and have your best DR people in front of it. Can only attack you 15x if yer medium. Admittedly that's 300 pts of Str dmg a round but suck it up. Mass Heal is in the book for a reason. If they're naturally got DR of Something/Iron, Magic, Adamantine, it's screwed! Also transmute rock to mud so it can't grab boulders. |
| Kyuketsukiouji03-26-05, 01:22 PM | Ranger 60. You have pretty much everything out there as a favored enemy and can autokill them all on a critical at line of sight range. |

Actually, I don't think the ordinary hammer gun is sufficient ordinance in this case... *begins crafting a Sledgehammer Bazooka.* actually I tend to disagree. There are monsters in the ELH that could take such a party apart, and even then, Gods just cannot be killed that easily (sure you can kill them, but they're not about to stay dead, and once you are a threat, you will have 7-8 whole pantheons breathing down your neck, it would take much more than a few high level mortals to do them all in.) Most of the party's adventuring would be in an epic setting, probably sigil, union, and various other planes or areas prone to epic level activity (i.e. Abyss & lower planes). Throw a few Hecatonchieres at that party and they won't feel so high and mighty. a party of infenals all casting hellballs could do it too, however gods are still beyong even 65th level character's reaches. At level 65 you are not gods, and any intelligent cadre of epic level creatures could still effectively eviscerate you. |
| Chosen of the Dark Sun03-26-05, 05:28 PM | I'm sorry, but the idea of a level 65 game just makes me wanna hurl. I mean, I know I'm biased (I don't even like going into epic levels, since its all "hey were invincible, lets just go and steal from some farmers, since no one can stop us!"), but this is ridiculous. Even in a high powered CS like FR, what is the point of level 65s? Its not like there's anything you can't just spit on to make it die. You'll just kill everything, and the game will be boring. But a Socerer 20/ wizard 20/ Mindbender 10/ Fighter 15 will kill anything. Uber epic magic, good combat, and the ability to just permanently dominate anyone who ****es you off. Or just take away the fighter levels, and figure out what the rules should be for an epic Mindbender (in case you don't know, Mindbender is a PrC from Complete Arcane. It allows you to permanently charm and dominate people :D ). |

You wouldn't get any epic bonus feats or epic spellcasting, not to mention doubling up with wiz/sorc is redundant and almost pointless. Mindbender is good, provided you run into something near your level that can't make the save, which btw is about a 1:1000000 chance unless your save DC is somewhere in the 50s or 60s, another thing that is rather difficult to accomplish without a focused build. Secondly, I'd like to see said aforementioned character last ten to twenty rounds with a colossus toe to toe without running away, dying or hiding Lastly, you obviously haven't played a real epic game, or have had a very poor experience with them, because any experienced epic level player will tell you very similar things. No offense meant here, but as the old saying goes, dont knock it til you've tried it. Most people who claim to hate epic levels either have a good personal reason (prefering simplicity and worldwide scope of low levels over the complexity of planehopping and epic level systems for example), or have had a poor experience/ bad epic DM. |
| Duvanok03-26-05, 08:21 PM | I'd like to place an advanced order for the sledgehammer bazooka, please. Masterwork, if possible. |
| Count Nerindil Van Seraph03-26-05, 08:39 PM | In my humble (and most likely slightly less that valid) opinion, this would be very difficult to make into a fun game. I mean, sure. For the first session there is the rush of power you get from being so powerful that you could punch a Great wyrm Red in Greyhawk all the way to Eberron. AS A WIZARD. But I think it would get dull. An idea that I could sink my sword into would be some sort of divine gladiatorial test. Perhaps your characters have just accended to godhood but, in order to get into th club house, they need to wressle Kord or match wits with Baccob. Or out b**** Lolth. That could make for an exiting few sesions. Or, if you wanted to make it longer you could ad some sort of plot to disrupt the tests by Asmodaus' long lost older bro Morty. But 65? Could you even live that long? Just a thought. Yours always, The Count :coolcthul |
| Plastik03-27-05, 02:39 AM | Wiz, Sorc, it doesn't matter. Just make it clear early on that Telekenisis is your thing. Do all you can to get it. Then show that you've got the goods by lifting everything within sight straight up, and puttign it all straght down... somewhere else. Kill townsfolk, take over mines. Be an Elf, so you can sleep for 4 hours. Make a point of murdering (cruelly as possable) all the other PCs within ten minutes. Show that you mean business. Show the DM he screwed up. Bad. I mean, hell, see if you can't blow up a lodestone. Tear the rift between this realm and that of the etheral, or even better, of the diine. Push herds of cattle into the realm of the gods. Pick up whole dungeons and empty them into towns. Call forth every Kobold in the multiverse to reign you as kind. Stage a hostile takeover. Then freeze the world. Kill everything. Start anew. Breathe life into stone. Make worshippers. Create life again. And if that gets boring, start creating illusory versions of yourself and kill them in front of the people. Make them question their god. Then pretend you found out. Rain down acidic hail. Make them suffer. Create and destroy, over and over. Give each currently major god 1 worshipper, and then go into the Realm of the Divine and kill them all. In fact, drag 'em out in front of their worshipper and decapitate them. You can do it. You know why you can? I'll tell you. IT'S BECAUSE DIVINE LEVEL IS 41 Above that, you're a GOD. By level 65, your're a god among gods. You kill gods and whine about how little XP they give. | green_yawgmoth03-27-05, 04:40 AM | Plastik doesn't know the first thing about gods, apparently. seeing as how Nerull sees and knows about any death 17 weeks before it happens, if you tried this, he goes to the other gods and says "hay guys guess what! Some fruitcake thinks he's going to rewrite creation just because he's got the power to kill a bunch of people at once!" At which point a god goes to every other god with Life or Death with a deck of normal cards and says "high card gets to swat that 'tard down!" Then Pelor draws the ace of diamonds, does a happy little dance, and says "Okay, watch his brain get a tiny sun right between the hemispheres. he's gonna melt like a Meteor Swarm on butter." And then you die. No save, no matter where you are, no matter what protections you think you have against death, and good luck getting a greater deity to give you a divine shield. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/yawgmoth/kittyjig.gif |

Your hand twists fate. Your mind spins lives. Your heart cuts time. Your feet smell bad. YOU'RE A FREAKING GOD. Message edited. Ok people, play nice ... Let's take that whole rant apart piece by piece shall we? First and foremost, telekinesis has it's limits, and that limit is somewhere between 250 and 750 lbs I believe, which invalidates what was suggested. Second, the other PCs are the same level, therefore they wouldn't go down without taking a few chunks of you with them (or they could even kill you). Next, a 5th level character with two bags of holding could tear a rift in the planes, it's not all that impressive. The whole "pushing cow herds" thing is about the only thing so far that by the rules you could do. Next, those kobolds would all fall to a single epic monster, no contest, all you need is something with lots of attacks or area affect spells (speaking of that, hell, a 15th level character could bake those kobolds). Second, the only existing spell capable of freezing large areas (and by large I mean 5-30 miles only) is Dire Winter, and the gods would kill you off before you had a chance to do much damage with it. Divine level is not 41, Divine level is detemined by the number of divine ranks you have, and a 65th level character still isn't entitled to divine ranks, therefore, the gods can still smack the crap out of them. At level 65 you are not a god, far from it. There are things in there capable of ripping even 65th level characters to shreds when correctly played. And let's not forget DM creativity, he could easily bring in a race of new epic monsters to challenge the PCs. |
| Plastik03-27-05, 12:38 PM | No, honestly, at level 65 there are some very (verrrry) undeniable ways to kill something. Like scrying inside someone's chest and telekenisis-ing his heart a short path out. And yes, there is a limit to Telekenisis. But no stone in most palaces will be over that weight. Yes, with a single telekenisis spell you can topple a kingdom. And no, you get saving throws against actions of gods. Some of us obv haven't read, well, anything on the gods. In fact, in some areas, the Gods have no power. Message edited. Just report the posts. Thanks. |
| green_yawgmoth03-27-05, 03:36 PM | Wow. No, seriously. Wow. You took that post seriouisly. Wow. There is no hope left for humanity. No, honestly, at level 65 there are some very (verrrry) undeniable ways to kill something. And Megrim, that was flaming. Just letting you know. Because, well, I let the WizO's know too. "Oh, now that I got hit with backlash, it was all just a joke! Ha ha ha... guys?" Sorry, not getting out of that one. Your post left nothing to make anyone believe you were joking at all. And anyone with D&Dg has read the Life or Death SDA, which specifically states that there is NO SAVING THROW and goes through ANY barrier except a divine shield, another SDA. It is the quintesential "god smites you. you die." effect. And saying that you reported someone is trolling, fyi. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/yawgmoth/kittyjig.gif |

| Plastik03-27-05, 05:23 PM | EDIT: Sorry mods, I realise the original version of this post was immature and trolling. Seeing as I can't delete, I guess I'll just apologize and remove the post. Feel free to warn me. |

Because playing high level D&D isn't playing "correctly", right? I agree that the power level is higher than I would think to play unless the DM sold the idea on me very well, but it is neither twinky nor munchkiny. Unless you're copying a 65th level character that's been published and breaking the written rules of the game to do it. The point of D&D is to have fun with your friends, not pander to the elitists. If playing at level 65 is fun for him, then he has grasped the point quite admirably. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/yawgmoth/kittyjig.gif |
| ORC_Tuhteth03-28-05, 04:53 PM | Guys, please make sure your posts are about the subject, not about other patrons. It's one thing to disagree with someone's argument -- it's another thing entirely to say that person is stupid. Throwing insults around violates the CoC, and we'll have no choice but to hand out official warnings. (And those go on your permanent record, right next to your SAT scores!! :) ) |
