| Krompt05-26-06, 05:24 PM | Last saturday I made a character for a new campaign where it was set up as everyone was a level 10+1d3, I got a level 12 so I was like, "alright cool, I'm gonna make a drunken Master" so I was excited and made a 6 Monk/6 Drunken Master. Everything went fine untill the DM looked at everyone's char sheets, looked at mine which is a C/N and then saw the 6 levels in monks and raised a holy crap storm say he only wanted Evil characters in his campaign, or people who would fit the Mercenary job (this is regular D&D using Player Handbook, Handbook II, Complete Warrior, Adventure, and some misc books). Then he began to ponder and soon decided to let me use my Drunken Master under the demand that I have to act like Jack Sparrow (the guy from Pirates of the Carribian(sp?)) and anytime I try to do something he looks at me like I was doing something wrong and forces my character to be drunk all the time, even when I havent even drunk a drink. To me, though I think I've watched the movie to many times, think a drunken master acts more like the guy from the Jackie Chan movie The Legend of the Drunken Master, overall is sober and cant fight untill he begins to drink, and I've never seen the pirates movie so really my question is, which should I do, RP my character the way that I think he should act or how my DM is forcing me to act? |

Why was he upset about the Mercenary thing? Did he state that in advance? At the end of the day it is your character, play him your way. Drunken masters do NOT have to be drunk all the time, and can fight perfectly well while sober. |
| Krompt05-26-06, 05:41 PM | my monk WAS lawful, got plastered and was kicked out, TURNING Chaotic Neutral, making him an ex-monk, he mentioned the mercenary thing in advance yes, he just didnt like the idea of having a Monk(Ex-Monk) being a mercenary and with the evil thing he stated that the characters COULDNT be Lawful Good |
| hmmmm05-27-06, 11:35 AM | I though Jack Sparrow would be a pirate of some sort. Anyway Drunken Masters don't always have to be drunk as people have already stated. |
| kelvinaw27305-27-06, 02:49 PM | Getting plastered isn't chaotic act for a Drunken Master, or they'd all be ex-monks! Anyway, one chaotic act does not make you chaotic. An ex-monk would make a fine mercenary anyway, so no problem there, and he isn't lawful good, so what's the issue? I can understand the DM wanting characters to fit the concept of the campaign and the setting, but he needs to fill you in with more detail if he wants you to do this without constant interference. |
| Krompt05-27-06, 04:11 PM | what I was going for with the chaotic neutral is the "free spirit" idea from the PHB, "a character free from both society's restrictions and a do gooder's zeal", I just wanted a character who was best friends with the bottle and the bar he liked to live in, I play the character as a person who would be a merc for the fun of it as long as he got a cool item or more money for wine, beer, ale, whatever, so I dont really see a problem with playing a Chaotic Neutral in a Merc setting. But what makes him Chaotic Neutral and not Neutral Evil is that he hardly ever uses Lethal damage and doesnt rob and pillage, he only uses Lethal Damage on creatures he can tell are meaning to do him harm, but if its like a human(oid) type creature he'll use non lethal. And what made him Chaotic Neutral was the things he did while drunk including almost destroying the monastery he lived at, chasing the head monk around with a broom, painting a statue of the deity, and causing alot of damage and leaving a few people hurt while trying to help someone (ended up knocking the person out he was trying to help, the 2 people attacking the person, and 6 random people walking by) |

Okay, so his problem is you either have to be evil or a Mercenary. Alright. A drunken master can be a mercenary, I don't see a problem here. No DM should be allowed to tell you how to RP. He can't force you too. and as I recall, Jack Sparrow was just Jack Sparrow, his behavior did not come from being drunk all the time. And if I recall correctly, Jack Sparrow wasn't a Monk nor a drunken master. To me, though I think I've watched the movie to many times, think a drunken master acts more like the guy from the Jackie Chan movie The Legend of the Drunken Master, overall is sober and cant fight untill he begins to drink, No no, Drunken Masters can fight perfectly fine anytime. Drinking gives them Power, a higher tolerance for pain, and flexibility. This is the whole point around a fighting style that imbues alcohol. and I've never seen the pirates movie so really my question is, which should I do, RP my character the way that I think he should act or how my DM is forcing me to act? No, you should sit down with your DM and make him watch “Drunken Master”, and “Drunken Master II: Legend of Drunken Master” with you, and explain to him that this is how you see your character. White Cane beggar aka Sam Seed the originator of the style, likes to drink enjoys tormenting his lazy students, and making fun of opponents, being up for Hire for more money to buy whine with makes perfect sense. |
