I'm new to the forums so hi!:) Anyways, I'm playing in D&D Iron Heroes so none of the party has magic. I'm playing an executioner. The rest of the team consists of a harrier, a beserker, an archer, a myrmadon and a weapons master. Now we had been sent out on a job to clear out a bunch of attackers that has been slaughtering caravans. We also have an optional goal of saving a girl that had been captured from the last caravan.

Now once we got to the wreckage of the caravans we got ambushed by the attackers. Of all things it was apes, lead by a king ape calling the woman his queen. Well we slaughtered the 5 apes that ambushed us and he ran off.

We followed him through the forest. We found him in a depression in a forest. In front of us were a bunch of ruined walls and pillars. The king was in the very back. a little further away from him are three apes like the ones we faced. Then there is the albino ape with four arms holding the girl.

The party split up, three of us including me, the harrier, and the myrmadon went around the right side of the forest and snuck behind the king. The Beserker and the archer whent around the left to sneak up on the four armed beast. The weapons master went down the middle to pick off the apes from the front with his bow.

Now here is where it gets interesting. First the harrier attacked the king with his sticks for a surprise round, he missed. I came in right behind him and attacked the ape in the back the same round shoving my sword deep into his back for 20 damage. The myrmadon soon attacked and hit, however the DM said "although you hit the weapons did not go in as deep as you thought they would, his skin is thick indeed." Meanwhile the archers begin shooting the lesser apes wounding them but not bringing them down and the Beserker jumps out mashing his maul into the face of the four armed abomination doing around 32 points of damage causing him to drop the girl.

First round I use a power attack and miss, the myrmadon attacks and hits and dosn't do much again. The beserker gets hit hard and strikes back with an even harder hit but now his health is reduced from 45 to 32. The king ape is now ticked off at me and slams his axe into my shoulder doing 17 points of damage reducing me from 30 hp to 13. Combat continues and now the beserker is reduced from 32 to 19 with a four armed ape foaming at the mouth. Now let me give you a mental picture of our situation.

Three of us are on the right side trying to take down the king. The king is more interested in me seeing as how I'm the back stabbing SOB that put a hole in his back. The other two have yet to do anything but give him a few scratches. two apes decided to come at the three of us and the third ape decided to go after the weapons master that has been shooting from a distance. The harrier, weapon master, and I dodged the attacks from the lesser ape but I think I'm sandwhiched between the king and the lesser ape. I'm badly wounded and I don't think I'll be able to take another hit from the king. The beserker is also badly wounded and I don't think he will last much longer either. the rest have suffered no damages yet.

I have tried talking the group into grabbing the girl and getting the hell out of there but no one seems interested in it. If I go down the king will surely kill the rest with ease. So I ask, what would you do in this situation? Do you have any advice for me?

I know its just a game and its just a character sheet but I'm really interested in the story and would hate to just die out in the second encounter and miss out on the rest of the fun. :)

Run if possible.

Without magic you have no way to pick up a few more HP to keep fighting. Grab the girl, and Full Withdrawal to avoid attacks of opportunity on the way out. Put the wounded between those with (mostly) full HP and the apes if possible.

If you have to fight it out, ignore the lesser apes for the moment and focus all attacks on the two strongest. Take them down as quickly as possible; the lesser apes may flee if their king is killed. Then again, they may fly into furious frenzy and become intent on rending you limb from limb...

Discretion is the better part of valor here, however. You need to get gone ASAP.

Yeah, if you have nobody in the party that can temporarily patch you up, you should retreat - preferably to an inaccessible location, like up on a ledge or something or just behind your friends so they get an AoO if the monsters pursue only you. Then use ranged attacks as best you can.

To get away, use the Withdraw action or Tumble; if you only use base movement you will get an AoO or else not get very far.

If possible, you might consider Tripping your enemies, so they can't attack (or follow) you easily, but you shouldn't try if you don't have a special Trip weapon or the appropriate feats/abilities.

Thanks for the advice! Currently its the apes turn to attack (including the king) If I manage to survive the attacks then I'll make a run for it. Would withdrawl allow me to pick the girl up on the way or is that up to the DM?

Pick up the girl and take her as hostage. She is his queen,he shouldn't risk harming her.

Withdrawing is a bit different in Iron Heroes if I recall correctly.

But, if it works like D&D, you can do nothing but move when using the Withdraw action.
