A weapon with an enhancement bonus adds that bonus to attack rolls and damage rolls.

Your +2 longsword grants you a +2 to attack and damage.

A weapon can have a total bonus of +10, but only +5 can be applied to attack and damage. The other +5 comes from enhancements such as shock, speed, keen, etc.

So (unless you're playing with Epic rules) you can only have a +5 weapon (attack/damage) with up to +5 worth of abilities.

[Note that you can have a +1 weapon (attack/damage) with abilities worth +9, for a total of +10.]
