| Nicholas the Paladin07-30-06, 02:00 PM | Hi all, As my name suggests in one of my campaigns I play a human Paladin (PrC Fist of Raziel). In my role I take risks for the team and have already died a few times. I have told my fellow players that when I die it is my wish to be ressurrected, for I wish to continu my quest for the good of mankind and to further the cause of Tyr my god (FR, God of Justice). Our group is steadily gaining levels (12th) and I was thinking about giving 'death' an even more heroic aspect. I am thinking about asking my DM to, when I do die again, to bring me back from the dead as something else then a human. It's supposed to be somekind of reward from my God. Could be something like a celestial, an aasimar, an archon, a saint .... etc It is just an idea, I don't know the power involved with these changes. Maybe I need to take an LA to make it work. Can you give me some tips and pointers? Are there rules for this? |

It brings you back in a new body, and while aasimar and celestials are not on the reincarnate list of possible incarnations, we're dealing with a god here, he can do whatever. Now, if you do come back as something with a level adjustment, you'll have to work out with your DM how you're going to handle that. Maybe by losing a level for being brought back to life anyway an Aasimar isn't a bad way to go (+1 LA), so you even out with the rest of the group, you just lost a Fist level. Other options could involve coming back as a deathless (see Book of Exalted Deeds), or taking the risen martyr PrC (I know, that may not be too tempting). |
| Good Agnostic07-30-06, 02:25 PM | Hey, We just did that exact thing. I'm playing a 12th level Paladin in Eberron (Sovereign Host). He dies protecting the party and his soul touches the "Divine Light" before he is raised. Thus, when he comes back, he looses the XP for death and another 4,000 XP for the change to Aasimar. So now, in character, he is learning what the change means. For example, a common tactic in our party is to "enlarge person" the Paladin and Fighter. Well, the first time we tried it after I came back - no effect. On the other hand, I blew the save against a "Hold Person" spell - but then it had no effect. It's been a fun little thing for the party and the DM. Just realize you are going to be losing a feat and extra skill points when you change from human to aasimar. Good luck, GA |
| Paxar07-30-06, 02:30 PM | I also saw something similar to this in a book once. A paladin (of Tyr, strangely enough) died and was brought back many many years later by his god for his devoted service. He wasn't quite human, but no one could tell the difference except that he seemed to be immune to death effects. |

Thanks for your tips till so far. I enjoyed your in-game experiences I took a look at the 'deathless' template and the risen Martyr. I'm afraid that these options will limit my role as the main warrior or my group. |

I took al look at the Aasimar in Races of Destiny. Seems very viable for a paladin-type. How did you do it?: loose a paladinlevel for dying (let's say go from 12th to 11th level) and loose another paladinlevel for being an Aasimar? So first I was a 12th level paladin and now I'm a 10th level Paladin+1 LA Aasimar? Besides that; I read that you become an 'native' outsider...which in most respects is an outsider. Does this mean that (for example) I gain good overall saves, get 8-sided HD and 8+INT skill points? (MM: this seems a bit too much) |

It's in the third book of the Pools trilogy with Tarl's son. |
| FloppyLlama07-31-06, 02:00 AM | The Saint template from the Book of Exalted Deeds is very nice. Spell DCs increase, you get holy damage added to all your attacks, a bonus to AC, damage reduction (which scales with your HD), fast healing that scales with your HD, immunities to acid, cold, electricity and petrification, resistance to fire and poison, better vision, the ability to protect your party members via a "Protective Aura", tongues AND bonuses to con, wis and cha, all for a measly +2 level adjustment. |

(MM: this seems a bit too much) See if you can get your dm to make an exception and let you replace that lost lv with the +1 LA from the assimar race, meaing that your ECL remains the same. So instead of a 12th lv paladin, you are an assimar paladin11. ANd no to the second, that usually applies only to racial HD, and even then, the text will tell you what attributes are changed. In the case of the assimar, you still get bab/saves/skills etc as per your class, only your type changes from humanoid to outsider. :) |
| Good Agnostic07-31-06, 11:57 PM | No, just the type changed and I switched the aasimar and human special abilities. My DM just charged my 4,000 XP and we didn't do a a LA. |
| The Game08-01-06, 12:16 AM | Death Knight. Hilarity and confusion will follow with a touch of tasty irony. |
| Cifer08-01-06, 10:45 AM | If you go for Aasimar, ask your DM whether you play with LA-buyoff (can be viewed in the SRD). At 12th level, the abilities of the race are not as good as a whole class-level. |
