| Phaje10-09-06, 04:02 PM | At 5th lvl a Paladin receives their special mount. One of the abilities this mount has is Improved Evasion allowing for the mount to take half dmg from a failed Ref save and no dmg on a successful Ref save, where it applies. Considering this is due to the mount avoiding harms way; if the Paladin were mounted at the time, would the avoidance of dmg transfer to the Paladin? (i.e. mount rolls and passes it's Ref save, avoiding dmg, meaning it got out of the Fireball's way. Since the Paladin is riding the mount, wouldn't the mount, essentially, remove the Paladin out of harms way?) Thanks for any and all help! :) |
| pres_man10-09-06, 04:53 PM | No. Instead of thinking of things like fireball as a total sphere, think instead of them as waves of flames with holes in them. Just because the mount is able to avoid the damage by dodging into some of these breaks in the flame (ala matrix moves), does not mean the hole is large enough for the rider to avoid the flames. If you don't want to make it too logical, just realize it is a game, and leave it at that. |
| Thunder Dragonbane10-09-06, 08:13 PM | Mounts gain empathic link, Improved evasion, share spells, and share saving throws. All in the first level you gain them, 5th lvl. As written if you are riding your mount yes you evade the damage. |
| Kradlo10-09-06, 08:44 PM | Sorry, Thunder, but you're absolutely wrong. The mount has Improved Evasion, not the rider. The saving throws made are independent of one another. Share Saving Throws simply means that the mount may use its base save bonus or that of the paladin, whichever is higher. It uses its own ability modifiers, and does not gain the benefit of any bonuses or feats that the paladin has. |

| razorboy10-10-06, 09:13 AM | Finally! A pally question that does not involve alignment! Yep, a pally riding a mount with improved evasion does not receive improved evasion himself. Very silly if you try to picture how that would look like (a warhorse is a heck of a lot bigger than a paladin in bulky armor, not to mention not particularly graceful), but on the other hand it does tend to save the mount's hide quite a few times. As for the paladin, he should have very high saves anyways, so he can take it. :) |
| Carnor_Jax10-10-06, 11:02 AM | This actually happened in one of my games. The Horse evaded but my pally took full damage. We RPed it by the fact that my horse used my body to shield it from the blast. |

| pres_man10-10-06, 07:47 PM | I believe the correct term is "The mount's paladin." Seriously, it is more powerful than its rider. And considering INT is second lowest on a paladin's list of priorities (dex being lowest), it can often be smarter too. |
