| HidroliX02-16-05, 11:36 AM | Once the session starts he is doing nothing else than whining about other characters... Like i am a psion level 8 and i got a werewolf afliction and I got the prestige class from:http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/psm/20031024a I am the most powerfull character in the group but that is not the point... HE says becouse i am a lot more powerfull than the rest my character is lame! psions are lame... they can do this and that... but then i give good comment and he only responds stupid... I tried to explain it very mature but he is just responding very childish and i get crazy of it i almost like it to slay every character he starts with... I play mostly towards good dont even use full potential of my character not even the halve!!! Some1 got a good idea how he can shut up with this is lame and that!? thnx! |
| happycows02-16-05, 11:51 AM | Psion overpowered? Wearwolf affliction? Sigh, lol. I'd probably sudden maximize my best area spell on you while melee combatents are threatening you. I'd then say, "well he was dead anyway." |
| Thoronmir02-16-05, 11:52 AM | Sure. Ask him to post his side of the story here too so we know what's going on. You might also ask your DM to chime in here as well, since he's in the best position to decide which of you is the problem player. |
| Ze_Mighty_Vegetable02-16-05, 01:07 PM | I am the most powerfull character in the group but that is not the point... Yet your point is that anopther player whines too much about the power of your PC... If your PC's unbalanced, it IS the point... HE says becouse i am a lot more powerfull than the rest my character is lame! psions are lame... they can do this and that... but then i give good comment and he only responds stupid... emphasis mine. sorry, but it's usualy the case. A PC who's a lot more powerfull than the rest of the group is NOT, repeat NOT, fun to play with. nobody likes being constantly outshined by the same PC. I play mostly towards good dont even use full potential of my character not even the halve!!! so, even though you're not using the full power of your PC, he's still unbalanced co mpared to the others? Ouch. Must be proud of your "build". go post it in CO board, but don't play with it. I reserve judgement for later (after you give us a bit more info), but it does sound a lot like powergaming to me. |
| Jell_Moo02-16-05, 01:29 PM | Ok... where to start... First of all, that PrC is *only* for 3.0 psionics. If you are playing 3.5 psionics (from the Expanded Psionics Handbook) you should not use that PrC. The two are pretty much incompatible. You're an Afflicted Werewolf. Ok. That makes your Effective Character Level 10. If his PC, or anybodies PC in the game is less than that (i.e. You are all level 8, but you have this template) then it is a valid complaint as it will make your character much more powerful. I have no idea how an 8th level Psion could be the most powerful member of any given group. You burn through power points like water if you augment them fully. I just want to make sure that you're not making the common mistake of 'over augmenting' your powers? You realize that the most Power Points you could spend on any given power is 8, right? Just checking... To sum it up, if your character is so much more powerful than everybody else's (which, if played by the rules, really shouldn't be. By the rules you'd probably be the weakest) then he does have a valid complaint. Whining and being a baby are certainly not mature, and that sort of behavior shouldn't be accepted at a gaming table. But the complaint is valid. It isn't fun when one character dominates the game. |
| Razoreface02-16-05, 02:38 PM | Why are you whining about how irritating it is to have someone in your group whining? I feel like going on IRC, and whining about how people on the forums are always whining. |
| Thorak02-16-05, 03:21 PM | Dangit, razoreface beat me to it. If you've got a problem with someone whining about your character, exactly how do you then think it will be OK for you to go whine about them somewhere else? |
| Aricandor02-16-05, 04:55 PM | ECL 12 actually (+2 LA, 2 HD animal as a wolf) |
| Jell_Moo02-16-05, 05:25 PM | ECL 12 actually (+2 LA, 2 HD animal as a wolf) You are completely right. I always do that with the Lycanthrope template. :embarrass Damn wolf hit dice... <mutter mutter> |
| Ginyu54902-16-05, 05:53 PM | yeah, its hard to tell whats going on balance wise w/o knowing the levels/abilities of others in the group. I see two possibilities here (damn binary way of thinking) 1.- The player in question is a goob, the game is balanced and the dm is fair, you just have a whiney player who is jealous of your character's powers/abilities. 2- The player in question is right. Have you considered that? Unless I was specifically running a game where everyone could play a monster character, I would probably end up taking a PC character and making them an NPC pretty quick if they became a were-whatever. Obviously this depends on whethor you built your character as a werewolf, or if it happened in-game and you have slowly progressed into where you are by role-playing your affliction. To me Lycanthropy is both a curse and a disease. No one in my games would ever WANT to be a Lycanthrope, and letting a PC play one at 8th level is a good way to unbalance the game. That said it is hard to know what's up as we have no context for the situation. (reminds me of a KODT comic strip where all the PC's figured out they would be much more powerful as werewolves, so they were lining up to be bitten by the werewolf they were supposed to be destroying - dm sigh - pretty funny to see a bunch of PC's fighting over who gets bit first. If I remember right I think the werewolf didn't cooperate and ended up savaging most if not all of the party -insert sissy-like screaming here-) :P |
| Razoreface02-16-05, 06:26 PM | 2- The player in question is right. Have you considered that? I think it's that we know he's right. He's a level 8 character who went out and got himself turned into a lycanthrope, instantly adding four levels to his character. He's right, because his fellow players are whining. Because, as he says, they believe he's too powerful. He's wrong because he says "I am the most powerfull character in the group but that is not the point..." Right before he says, "HE says becouse i am a lot more powerfull than the rest my character is lame!" See? He's right, because his group is whining because his character is too strong. Because, it's actually 50% more powerful than the rest of the group. He's wrong, because he thinks he's right. |
| wonlee7602-16-05, 06:51 PM | Being an afflicted werewolf is going to suck for you for a few levels due to no ranks in control shape. Full moon, forcefully change into wolf form, go kill innocent old people and children, wake up next morning covered in blood and several guards chasing after your for murder. Most of my PCs if they have a chance of being afflicted immediately seeks a healer or cleric to cure them of the affliction because they don't like the idea of them being an NPC one night a month (at least until the PC gets "real" levels for skill points to put into control shape). If a player is that hardcore about being a lycanthrope, I sometimes do a savage progression thing giving the powers of the lycanthrope over time and the smart player will pour all of his skill points, even if it is a cross-class skill, into control shape when he gets the HD from the savage progression to minimize the chances of him being hunted by a mob after a full moon. |
| Pellaz02-16-05, 09:14 PM | The problem in a nice, neat nutshell: http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=352822 |
| Solmund02-16-05, 09:32 PM | just bite him. plain and simple. oh, and what disiplin are you? if you are a telepath, just try to convince him he is a dragon and that his nest is on the side of a very high cliff....... i am not kidding. |
| Ginyu54902-17-05, 12:58 AM | Try playing it like a Gandalf character - ie: Gandalf travelled around with all those guys and was powerful, but didn't smite every orc they came across with huge fireballs. In fact he used a sword most of the time and he was a WIZARD. I mean, play your character where he doesn't bring out the big guns and lets the other players do most of the work unless he really has to - ie: Balrog duel. |
| Falkus02-17-05, 01:11 AM | Gandalf travelled around with all those guys and was powerful, but didn't smite every orc they came across with huge fireballs That would be because magic in Tolkien's literature was not the machine gun fireball wizardry of DnD, but rather, something a lot more subtle. |
| Callista02-17-05, 01:27 AM | Hmm... yes, I agree: One character who overshadows the others is often not a good thing. Is your character Good-aligned? Or even a loyal-to-friends Neutral? Try turning him into the protector of the group. Take a level of Devoted Defender, if you can... that extra power means you can probably soak up a lot of damage for the other people. Try Shield Other, as well. Protect the spellcasters. Run around with healing potions. Hinder enemies rather than simply blasting them away. If you can't do that, or your fellow players won't accept that, have the lycanthropy removed (I'm assuming afflicted lycanthrope here). I'm not sure if your DM will allow this to be done easily, but if he doesn't, just go on a quest to get the lycanthropy cured, while you make a new character (at party average if you can talk your DM into it) to play meanwhile. Then, when your party has caught up to your character's ECL, you can bring him back in (cured or not, depending on how soon you want to bring him back in). If you're a natural lycanthrope, you'll have to go on a quest for a different reason... maybe Mom's dying of a strange magical disease, and you're questing for a cure. You can have this occur off-camera if you like; or have the DM create a small adventure that involves a very long journey (i.e., little XP and a lot of time). Then make that second character, re-join your party, and have the first character join the party again when the character power levels are a little better matched. If your DM won't allow your character to come back in, you may retire the current character somewhere where the PCs can meet him as an NPC... this is usually the best way to get rid of problem characters (I may have to do this soon, for one of my characters... she's about equally powerful to the rest of the party, but she's mentally unbalanced--Frenzied Berserker style, without actual levels in the PrC--and getting dangerous...). Think of this as a chance to create a new character, figure out new strategy... Make sure you fill the hole your old character created, though. You don't have to create an identical character though; in fact, don't. If the party were to be missing its lockpick, try creating a wizard with a wand of Knock... or if the party were missing its cleric, create a Rogue with Use Magic Device and healing scrolls... you get the gist. |
| Szat02-17-05, 05:57 PM | You know, it's the darndest thing, I swear I saw the HUGEST troll wandering by here, did anyone else see it? If you're so concerned about the end of the player's whining then solve that which he's whining about. Play a different character, one that isn't so "leet, kewl or hackzorz" If you're looking for people to go all  over your build then go post on CO boards and stop wasting space on these boards. In general just stop whining, the game isn't supposed to be about who's got the better character but how interesting the storyline is. UNLESS your an Egoist 8/Natural Lycanthrope/Ur-Priest 10/Archmage 5/Dragon Disciple 4/..........etc. etc. THEN, THEN you're the most "leet, kewl, and hackzorz" congratulations on your awesome build and way to take away the ejoyment of the game from the other players :plotting: :evillaugh |
| Anthus_Longblade02-17-05, 06:49 PM | but then i give good comment and he only responds stupid... Use correct grammar when calling someone else stupid. ;) |
| zerpentor02-17-05, 07:51 PM | Since 90% of the posts here fail to produce any sort of constructive solutions to your problem I'll submit the way we solve these things in our group. when Player1 whines about the strength of Player2's character we usually let the two players in question swap characters and duel 1on1. Note that this fight is not actually taking place ingame, but merely a "virtual fight" if you will... the 2 players are given time to examine the capabilites of the character and when both are ready, the fighting commence. If the supposedly stronger character annihilates the other without much of a struggle or doesn't even lose half it's hitpoints then the power difference is obvious and the whining player was correct in his complaint.. by the way Anthus_Longblade... you might want to consider the fact that not everybody is from the US or UK and have taken extensive classes in english grammar and spelling. |
| Anthus_Longblade02-17-05, 09:11 PM | by the way Anthus_Longblade... you might want to consider the fact that not everybody is from the US or UK and have taken extensive classes in english grammar and spelling. I thought of that, and I respect your point, but I have my doubts. For one, the grammar in the OP starts just fine: Once the session starts he is doing nothing else than whining about other characters... but by the end it has degenerated into this: thnx! It strikes me that if the bad grammar was simply the result of a lack of knowledge, it would have been at the same level through the whole post. Also, I've been learning Spanish for less than a year, and despite being incapable of forming any but the simplest of sentences, I like to believe I can at least make them grammatically correct. |
| Token02-18-05, 01:48 AM | Some1 got a good idea how he can shut up with this is lame and that!? You could work with him to make his weaker-than-the-psion character be more powerful, perhaps get a min/maxer to fix his feat selection. If he doesn't like his character he shouldn't make it your problem, he should ask the DM if he can make a new character. |
| Jell_Moo02-18-05, 02:24 AM | Kick him in the nuts. No seriously, if someone is constantly complaining about how your character is over-powered, then point out how weak the psion is (the fact that no good powergamers play it should be your first clue), then say he should stop playing a bard, then kick him really, really hard, in the nuts. Then he has something REAL to complain about. The next time he complains, kick him again. If he keeps complaining, he'll eventually be conditioned to have ball pain every time he complains, and not do it any more. Or, you could work with him to make his weaker-than-the-psion character be more powerful, perhaps get a min/maxer to fix his feat selection. If he doesn't like his character he shouldn't make it your problem, he should ask the DM if he can make a new character. HAHAHAHAHA!!! Oh thank you, I needed a good laugh. The Psion is weak? I like that one, I'll have to remember it... The implication that the Bard is weak... Oh, that's a good one too! Ah, fun stuff, two of the most powerful classes in the game called weak... I'm laughing so hard I'm practically crying... Great advice though, kicking a player in the junk. That's sure to work wonders. Practically a never fail plan that one. Certainly won't get you booted out of a group, get the crap kicked out of you, or maybe even arrested. That would never happen. The fact of the matter is that the OP's character is effectively double the level of the other characters in his party. That just might be why he's more powerful than they are. Maybe, just maybe, the rest of the party has a right to be slightly miffed that he's outshining them. |

Every class, race or Prc CAN be powergamed. If your argument is that he's not powergaming because he could do far worse with another class, it's also a flase argument. Pointing out how you could be more powerfull in another class doesn't address the balance issue of the present character. If a single player is significantly more powerfull than the others, who's unbalancing the game? The munchkin, not the rest of the party. gotta go with the group, not an abusive player. as far as kicking him in the nuts... A): Real mature B): Easy to say behind a computer screen... |
| Solmund02-18-05, 06:14 PM | as i said, bite him.... it will solve all. to bad you can't control those you give lycanthropy to....... :D |
| Token02-19-05, 02:36 AM | Saying a class can't be powergamed is totaly false. Every class, race or Prc CAN be powergamed. Please re-read the section of my own quote that you yourself emphisised. I never said that it CAN'T be powergamed, I merely said that it ISN'T powergamed by good powergamer munchkin twinks. as far as kicking him in the nuts... A): Real mature B): Easy to say behind a computer screen... I have a nice pair of size 13 1/2 redwing steel toe work boots that I'm sure would do wonders for removing you from the gene pool. |
| Encard02-19-05, 03:19 PM | Token, stop babbling. Your threats just make you sound useless. Also, you might want to consider that someone doesn't have to play the most powerful character possible under the entire D&D rules sytem to make a grotesquely powergamed character. You agreed that the psion can indeed be powergamed - well, if this fellow is powergaming a great deal and the rest of his group isn't, that's a problem, whether or not it's the case that somewhere, there exists some character that's more powerful. Now, in response to the OP... I have to agree with most of the comments already made: your character is almost certainly too powerful for the group in question, and that's cutting into everyone else's fun. This is a bad thing. Even if you haven't particularly min-maxed the character, his ECL is disturbingly high compared to the rest of your party. Speak with your DM about fixing that problem - some possibilities might be to bump the other characters up a bit in level, cure your lycanthropy, or cut down on the amount of magic items you have, but there're certainly other options as well. |

| Dunelord02-19-05, 11:22 PM | First let me go on the record as saying that it is BAD to threaten each other on here. As to the problem if you went out of you way to be a Werewolf they have a point. If it just happened it can be a hassle to get ride of it, and you aren't their yet then not much to be done about that. Have your runner give you the ECL and not let you gain any levels till you gain enough XP to be 12th. I could be wrong but I belive their is a rule for a character taking negatives to counter their ECL they havn't earned yet in the Players guide to Fayrune. |
