A powerful character needed for a powergaming group [Archive] - Wizards Community

I'll often play with groups that are used to power gaming.. making silly powerful characters in their group to abuse the rules a little.

At least in my experience, it sucks to be the guy that has the weakest character so in the off chance that someone might be running a Living Greyhawk game, what ideally should I be?

I'm looking for a fighter/paladin (preferred)/ranger/barbarian prestige class that is almost ridiculous and the best way to set the stats up for one.

Anyone able to help?

I don't run or play in a living gray hawk game, so I don't know if there are any rules in there, but I'll try to help with it.

First, what stats did you roll? Or is it point buy?

Second, what level are you?

And third, what books are allowed?

1st Level, any books (though there are closed classes) - 28 point buy (though with it being everything starting at 8, 1-14 costs 1 point per point increase, 15-16 is 2 points per point increase and 17-18 is 3 per point increase)

Er.. Sorry, I must of missed this earlier, but do you want to be a multiclass in all of them? Or are you looking for a class that combines elements of all of those classes?

I personally like the following combos

Rogue/Swordsage
Scout/Warlock
Cleric
Wizard
Warblade/Incarnate

It all depends on party makeup and needs.

Yes, you should post this on the CO boards, not here. They do this all the time.

You should be a barbarian or a fighter.

Fighter: you get bonus feats and martial weapons

Barbarian: you can RAGE

Monks are the best non-caster IMO

If you just want to beat on all your powergamer friends in Living Greyhawk, all you have to do is play a dwarf druid, with these stats:
Str 8
Dex 8
Con 18
Int 10
Wis 18
Cha 6

Once you get to 6th level you take natural spell and its game over. Your wild shaped all the time, so there is no need to speak with your crappy cha score. You can have an 8 in your Int and an 8 in cha if you can stand having your skills hit for the balance between the stats. Get a crocodile as your animal companion when you can. If you do go with druid heres a source for help http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=465005

Once you get to 6th level : nice trick, that. And "Your wild shaped all the time"- you do know there is a time limit on wildshape?

Try Pun-Pun, but in all seriousness given that your DM is allowing powergameing, I see no reason why he'd disallow The Rebalanced Paladin (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=761045) so ask him about it if your content on playing a Paladin (because face it, with the RAW a Paladin is never going to compete with power gamed spell casters)

Yeah, thats the only difficult part. Getting to 6th level. But the animal companion acts as a hard hitting body guard until then. All you do is self buff and try not to get killed.

And on your other comment, once you have 2 uses of wildshape (Hey that happens at 6th level, what do ya know?) you can stay wildshaped for 12 hours (The part of the day that has light is only 12 hours? No kidding huh.) and with natural spell you can cast spells while wild shaped, which makes the druid the most versatile and powerful class in the game.

Well, my Druid died @ 5th level :ghosted: , so it's not so easy.

And, I guess your DM never throws wandering monsters at you while camped. Ours does. (I do, too.) Now, once you can stay that way for 24 hours, THAT is "all day".

I agree the Druid is the most powerful and versatile class in the game- but NOT at level 6. That uber-power comes much later.

well 1) it helps if you cheese your stats with point buy to stay alive. Also if you use augment summon build...

2) it's not much later, it's level 8.

3)Personally if you get random encounter in camp past level 4 as a party, your wizard sucks, or your party needs a wizard.

So true. Augment summoning build is good for LG. I don't think they let you go past 16th level.

Well, remember this is Living Greyhawk and it should theoretically all be balanced to a certain degree so power gaming is still kind of confined (generally DnD is easily broken imo, at least I've seen it too many times from various books)

I'm not looking to multiclass tons of things, I'm just looking for a really cool and broken combat class. I do like fighter or knight builds so I would like a prestige class that is ridiculously strong power wise. That and I like playing paladin types.

Can a Mod move this to CO please?

Welll, the paladin is a hard class to make truly powerful, because their class abilities are below average, and because they suffer from MAD. As far as I have been told, the crusader class from ToB or Bo9S (I cant remember) offer far mor power with the same essential flavor as the paladin.

You could also make a really religious duckblade character, and play him largely as you would a paladin. Duskblades are very powerful, and once you hit 3rd level you will be able to deal massive damage to single targets all the time.

Go Human sorcerer 1/Paladin X until reaching a prestige class taking Enlarge Person and True Strike as spells.

Or go Human Barbarian 5/Fighter 4 until going into a prestige class. Add theWeapon Specialization (Lance) feat chain to you feat list.

For feats take the Power Attack feat, the Cleave feat chain, the Mounted Combat feat chain, and the Weapon Focus (Lance) feat.

Make sure to purchase Horseshoes of the Zephyr if they are every made available.

If you are really keen on playing a paladin, a pretty effective idea is paladin 2/sorcerer 6/Abjurant Champion 5/Eldritch knight 7. It gives you decent arcane power, melee power and sky-high saves.

Well for a powerful character druid and 'natural spell' -feat seems the easy way out especially if you DM isn't choosy on what animals you can shapeshift into :P
Say how does it sound being a diretiger with spells & feats...
Druid can easily break a game if you tweak too much though but if the rest of the group also optimize it should be ok I think.

Observations based on group with CoDzilla/artificer/bard/druid:

The bard boosts everyone quite a bit, ending up mostly responsible for a large part of the group's effectiveness due to a high end inspire courage.

Artificer is as good as the magic items available.

Druid tears things apart with relative ease, though would be considerably less effective without the song.

CoDzilla tends to one shot enemies in the right circumstances, but doesn't always get the chance. If engaged directly, durable and hits somewhat hard but is considerably less effective.

Conclusion: All are strong, all definitely have their place and fit right in with the druid, at least for the time being.

Fighter/paladin cross eh? Ttry playing a halfling out rider on a wardog. use a lance, and rino hide armour. I say halfing becuase you can take a dog more places then a war horse.

Barbarian/ranger cross? I a fan of fighter 2/barbarian 2/ranger 2 into bear warroir CW. Feats extra rage, power attack, cleave, other stuff.

As for broken melee class. You can't go wrong with druid. Play a human, feats are spell focus conj, augmented summoning, craft wonderouse item, and natural spell. Until 6th use summons, and your guard pet. Save up 5,000gp and craft some druids vestments as soon as you can. Then at 6th, turn into an animal and use the bite of X spells in the spell compendium.

The bladesinger can do massive damage if done properly with the sword casting as well.

It's funny reading what non-CO-ers think about party balance and power levels...

RE the OP: If you want a powerful melee build, look into the Frenzied Berserker. Use Warblade primarily, and make sure you take the 1st level barbarian substitution from Complete Champion that grants pounce. THF that great sword, and make liberal use of leap attack, combat brute, and shock trooper. throw in battle jump for extra cheese.

If Complete Champion is currently allowed, then I'd go with an Ordained Champion with Touch of Healing. That's fun and flavorful with tons of power.

i suggest (im not an optimizer) dungeon crasher (alternate class feature dungeonscape). lion totem barbarian.there is something else that doubles damage on a chargethat i cant remember, frenzy berserker with deathless frenzy makes you unkillable. using whirling frenzy on that one barb will just give you an attack. take the twf feat tree and shock trooper. with leap attack. i think this i a pretty good melee build

Does living greyhawk even allow sub levels?!? Because last time I played living greyhawk they were explictly forbidden. I'm also fairly certain that ToB hasn't been approved yet. I hate figuring out otimizing for living games since I'm unsure of whats allowed, whats on the consideration list and whats banned. I guess I could look it up on the wizards board if I really cared...we'll see if I care next post hehe :P .
